Moslie Thompson & Mother Penny Thompson

Moslie Thompson , 1100 E. 12th St., Fort Worth, Texas, and her mother, Penny Thompson , are famed as local custodians of negro occultism handed down in the folklore of countless generations from the ancient voodoo practitioners in the African jungles. Their beliefs as to the cause and correction of troubles humans are beset with are based on superstitions that reflect the mentality of the race. Not every one believe in de powah of de evil and de good spirit, 'cause of dat dey don' know how to best de evil powah. Ise make a study of dat all my life. Ise larnt it f'om watchin' diffe'ent people w'ens deys am effect wid evil powah, an' watch hows deys gets shunt of de misery; an' f'om Mammy an' my Grandma. Grandma tell many time 'bout two men in Georgia; one have de evil powah an' de tudder de pawah fo' good an' dem two men wo'k together. One puts de spell on de people, an' de tudder comes an' offers to 'Move de spell fo' pay. Dat am some business. Some fo'ks have both de evil an' de good powah. Ise 'plain what heppened once to Grandma dat Mammy seen.  Mammy am sattin' right heyah an' can swear to it. Can't you Mammy? Sho Ise can," said her mother, Penny .  Youse see Ise am a picaninny den about nine yeah ol' an' 'membahs well. Now, it am 'bout surrender time an' my Grandma am wid her ol' Marster. One day just befoah milkin' time an ol' nigger come an' wants to stay all night an' de Marster 'llows him. Dat ol' nigger have long w'te hair an' whiskers an' de sharp eye. Well, my Grandma goes fo' to do her milkin' an' while she am a milkin' dat ol' nigger comes to de milk shed whar she am an' sez, "Give me a drink of de milk." Grandma am not 'llowed to do dat an' sez, "No Ise can' do dat." Dat ol' nigger sez, "Youse will wish yous had," and goes off. Grandma am in de milkhouse tendin' de milk. Marster an' Mammy am in de house, w'ens all a sudden deys heahs de noise lak de cow's bellow. Marster sez to Mammy, "Run picanniny an' see what am de noise." Mammy runs to de milkhouse an' dere she finds her Mammy a layin' on de floah. Her eyes am a-rollin' an' her whole body am a quiverment. Mammy runs an' tells de Marster. He had Grandma carried in de house, by dat time dere am foam comin' out her mouth an' she am rigid all ovah. Mammy's Marster called her to his desk an' sez to her, "Run wid dis note to Marster Brown's "; which she did, she runs all de way. Marster Brown come quick an' w'ens looks at Grandma sez, she have de spell on her an' calls de ol' strange nigger an' sez to him: "Youse tuks dat spell of des nigger! Youse tuks de spell off Ise sez an' Ise means it!!" Dat ol' nigger sneaks off like de egg suckin' dawg. Aftah dat 'twarnt long till Grandma relax an' den began to groan; 'twarnt long till she am herself, 'cept she am powahful tired.

Mammy youse tell de man 'bout how de Washington woman gets rid of her husband while I'se gets de drink of wauter." Ise sho will. Now 'twas dis way. It am back in Georgia an' dis Washington woman wants to transport her husband fo' tudder man. She knows a nigger dat have de evil powah, she pays him $10, an' dis am done. Dat man tuks de ol' shoe dat belongs to de woman's husband an' cuts de tops off. He tuks dat top an' nails it to de box car. Well, twant long till dat husband starts to movin', an' him keeps movin' an deys nevah heahs f'om him aftah dat. So, be sure to destroy de ol' shoe, 'cause if some one wid de evil powah gits hold of youse shoe, dey can puts youse to transportin'. Yas sar, so long as de car, or de wagon, or de automobile, or sich dat it am nailed to am movin' youse will keeps a-movin'. "Now Ise told 'bout dat Moslie ", said Penny , "youse tell de tudder 'bout de pulverized hide". Dats des way, youse tuks de hide of de snake or de frog an' dry it an' den pulverize dat dry hide. If some of dat dry pulverized hide am put in wauter, or in coffee, by some one dat have de evil powah, de person dat drinks de wauter will have a small animal inside of dem an' course dat cause misery. If deys tuks dat pulverized hide an' puts it undah de inner sole of de shoe. De person dat wears dat shoe will have de foot misery so long as he have dat stuff in de shoe. Ise nevah tuks de ashes out, or sweeps de floah, after sundown. Mammy larnt me dat. If youse do youse can' keeps de house clean. No sar, youse jus' can't keep it clean, all de dirt in de county will come to youse house. Nevah comb youse hair aftah sundown. If youse gwine to de party comb de hair befoah de sun goes down; to do tudderwise youse will git so forgetful dat youse am liable to fo'get to come to youse meals. Wehns youse have de hair cut, or cut de finger nails be sho 'taint on Friday, 'cause youse sho will have bad luck wid de hair an' han' if youse do. Now dar are people dat have de powah to turn de drinkin' wauter poison during de night. If youse keeps drinkin' wauter in de pail; get fresh wauter in de mor'nin befoah youse tuks a drink. Dem wid de evil powah can cause awful misery. Many times Ise seen cullud fo'ks suffer wid de bowel misery. It am w'en de nigger am punged. Dat am dis way. Deys bore a hole in de tree or de log an' den puts a little of dat (feces) f'om de bowel movement in de hole an' den plug de hole.

De party dat have dat spell put on dem will have de lock bowels until de plug am moved. If it am not moved in 18 days dey will die. Dat am sho misery. If some one puts pins in de bow of de hat band dat will cause de head misery. Ise am cookin' fo' Marster Brown one time an' he starts comin' in de kitchen fo' de soda an' sez it an fo' de headache. Ise told him look fo' pins in de bow of a hat dat belong to him. "Shucks, cook dat am not de cause", him sez, Ise sez nothin', but Ise look ovah his ol' hats an' sho 'nuff Ise found pins in de bow of de band of one of dem. Ise tuk de hat to him. "See hear", sez Ise an' shows de hat to him. "Sho nuff dere am pins in de how, but dat am not de cause of my headaches", he sez. Ise tuk de pins out an' de headaches stopped. Youse heahs 'bout it am bad luck fo' to put youse hat on de bed; 'tis unless youse put de crown of de hat down an' den no evil can get under it. Ise gwine tell youse somethin' dat will keep de evil powah down. Wear a dime coin tied 'round de leg like dis Ise have on my leg an' dat helps keep de evil powah away. W'ens youse see it turn green dat shows some one am tryin' to put injury on youse an' de coin am catchin' it. In dis house thar am always de p'otection mixture, to make it youse do dis way: Put one-half teaspoon of red pepper, black pepper an' salt together. Measure it dat way as much as youse want to mix. Now if some one comes to youse house as a friend, but come fo' to cause trubble sich as flirt wid de wife or de husband, or tries to do somethin' dat will cause separation use de mixture. W'ens dey leaves de house youse go to de back doah an' tuks a pinch of de mixture an' sprinkle it f'om de back to de f'ont of de house an' at de f'ont doah tuks a pinch an' throws aftah dem. If youse do dat thar wont be any effect f'om de powah. W'en de husband begans to care fo' a tudder woman if de wife puts a pinch of de p'otection mixture under de bed befoah gwine to bed dat will cause de man to fo' get de tudder woman. "Now, w'ite man youse Ju' watch de thin' Ise toll an' youse see dats deys am right.
