Biography of
Archelaus
Gibson & Hulda Carson
Hulda Carson Gibson wife of
Archelaus Gibson Family
researcher, Mary June Butler supplied this photo. Thanks cuz! |
Archelaus Gibson was born 1811 in Ohio, the son of
Abel Gibson born 1790 and Cecilia /Celey Harold born about 1793. [Abel was
the son of Archelaus Gibson and Sarah Sumners]. Hulda Carson was born September 28, 1816 in Stokes
County, North Carolina, to the parents of John S. Carson and Bethana
Jessup-Carson, both of Kentucky. December 6. 1833 in Hendricks County, Indiana,
Hulda Carson and Archelaus Gibson were married. By 1850 the Archelaus & Hulda had moved to Hamilton
County, Adams Twp., Indiana. They had 7 children in the 1850 census,

**I have come across several different spellings
for these two names, (Vincey, Marcey, Mary)(Celia, Ceclia, Seleah). For
simplicity I have chosen to use the names listed above throughout this site. Per the 1856 Iowa State census, Archelaus a farmer, and Hulda had moved to
Greene Co, Kendrick Twp, Iowa in the year 1853. This census finds Lucinda and
Albert no longer living in the household and two additional children born,
Ann born 1853 and Jessie born 1856. (Son Albert J. Gibson married Mary Seaman
Nov.8, 1857 in Greene Co, IA). *See photo of
Albert, Matilda, Cyrus & Jessie. Archelaus died March 18th,
1873 and is buried in the Gibson Cemetery in Scranton, Greene Co, IA. The 1880 census finds Hulda (aka Huldy) living with her youngest son, Jessie a farmer,
and his new bride Mary Grable-Gibson. [Jessie and Mary are reported on the
census to have married within the year]. Also living in the household is Emma
Gibson, attending school, age 11, who is their granddaughter, child of son
Cyrus, and wife Mathilda Adkins-Gibson. There is a family story, which
I have as yet been unable to confirm, which states Archelaus and family moved
to Colorado to seek their fortune in the “Gold Rush”, only to return several
years later. 2 children do show to have died in Colorado, (Ann and Isaac), so
it is quite possible there is merit to this story. As I find information I
will of course update it here. The story is
confirmed!! Read all about it in an article printed in the Jefferson Bee
Newspaper in 1936! This
is an autobiography printed of Matilda Gibson-Kennett, which gives LOTS of
details of the family in the early years from 1853. To read the details click here In the 1856, 1860 and 1880 census, 2 farms away from the Archelaus Gibson family
lives Elisha Gibson and wife Phoebe Janet Clarke-Davis-Gibson and their (11)
children, (also 1 child from Phoebe’s previous marriage, although none of 8 children
from Elisha’s 1st marriage to Elizabeth Brown). Archelaus and
Elisha share the same Great grandparents, Valentine & Elizabeth Gibson.
(Elisha moved from Delaware County, Indiana to Greene Co, Kendrick Twp, Iowa
in 1856 per the State Census). July 13, 1907 Hulda Carson-Gibson died in Dedham,
Greene County, Iowa and is buried in the Gibson Cemetery, Scranton, Greene
County, Iowa. Much of this information I have
been able to locate on census records, fellow family researchers etc., but
the parent and grandparent information of Archelaus was given to me by fellow
Gibson family researcher Dorothy Gibson Tuttle. Thanks Dorothy! Please see for
