Final Call. The end came for one of
Fairfield's most beloved woman at the ripe age of nearly ninety. Mrs. Christina KNODELL, one of
Fairfield's oldest and most beloved women, died at her home Sunday afternoon
about one o' clock. She had been seriously ill for about two weeks, as a
result of a fall on Monday, March 14th, when her hip was broken. During her
nearly two weeks of suffering she had the tender ministrations of many loved
ones and a skilled nurse. The end came peacefully, as one going into a deep
sleep. The funeral service was
conducted at the First M.E. Church on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30, in the
presence of a large concourse of friends and relatives who made this last
tribute to one of whom they had a lifetime of respect and love. Rev. Roy N.
KEAN, pastor conducted the service. The burial took place in Bethel
Cemetery, southwest of Ellery, beside the grave of her husband, Judge William
KNODELL, a civil war veteran. Christina, daughter of Leander
and Rebecca BATSON-MELROSE, was born Oct. 12th, 1842, at the family home in
Eastern Leech Township: died March 27th, 1932; aged 89 years, 5 months and 15
days. She was married to the late
Judge William KNODELL, May 10th, 1867. Of this union 7 children were born:
Vivian, Victor, Felisia, Lewis, William, Roscoe and Dietrich. The father and
two of these children preceded the mother in death. Judge KNODELL departed
this life on April 3rd, 1892: Lewis died on October 14th, 1922 and Vivian on
April 23rd, 1926.The loss of these dear ones bore heavily upon this devoted

Melrose, 91, Dies A well-known Fairfield man, E.
C. Melrose, 91, died at 12:41 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, 1985, at Fairfield
Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at
Johnson's Funeral Home, with Rev. Louis Frick officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home for visitation Friday evening from 6-8
p.m. Mr. Melrose was born in
Fairfield Aug. 11, 1894, the son of Chester H. and Hattie M. Lyon
Melrose. He married the former Ruth
Creighton in 1917, in Fairfield. Mr.
Melrose grew up in Grayville and he attended business school in Indianapolis,
Ind. A lifelong Methodist, Mr.
Melrose was a member of the Fairfield Elks and the Masonic Lodge. Among survivors are two sons,
Dan. C. and Edward C. Melrose,; one sister, Caro Webber, five grandchildren; ten
great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death
by his wife, two brothers and one infant daughter. “Wayne County Press”, Thursday, November 1st, 1976 Mrs. E. C. Melrose, 81, Dies Well-known Fairfield woman,
Mrs. Ruth Melrose, the wife of E. C. Melrose, died at 7:20 Saturday morning
in Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Melrose was admitted to the hospital Thursday suffering
from heart complications and a diabetic condition. Her family said she failed
to respond to treatment. Her death was unexpected. Services will be conducted at 2
p.m. Tuesday at Nale's Funeral Home in Fairfield, with Rev. B. R. Cummins
officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the
funeral home from 6 to 9 Monday night. Mrs. Melrose was born in
Fairfield Feb. 18, 1895, the daughter of the late Thomas H. and Alma
(Patterson) Creighton. She was reared in Fairfield. Her father, for years was
a prominent lawyer here. On Sept. 12, 1917, she was married to Mr. Melrose.
They have spent their entire lives in Fairfield. Mr. Melrose, for years, has
been an oil lease man for Duncan Leases and Royalties. Mrs. Melrose was a
housewife. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband; two
sons, Dan, of Fairfield; and Ed Jr., of Houston, Tex.; five grandchildren;
and four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Margaret Harrison, of
Grandville, O*.; Mrs. Helen Pratt, of Riverside, Calif.; Mrs. Alice Willis,
of Sarasota, Fla.; and Mrs. Mildred Coates, of Lafayette, Ind. Preceding her in death were two
brothers, T. H. Creighton, Jr., and Charles Richard Creighton; and one
sister, Esther Wilson. |
