The family of Grafton Willoughby and Mary Jane Bracken
compiled by Beth Birchfield

Grafton O. Willoughby
b. in January of 1865 in Butler County, Kentucky
d. between 1921/1929
Grafton was the son of Isaac Patrick Willoughby and Sally Ann Embry (MRIN 67)

A cousin also researching this family had told me that Grafton was a missing person. The story in her side of the family, was that Grafton went to look for work and was never heard from again. What sources that I have found seem to back up this story. He disappears after the 1920 census. He may have been the informant on his sons death certificate in 1924. By 1930 his wife was calling herself a widow. There is no death certificate or known place of burial for Grafton. A son-in-law by the last name of SYKES may have went with him, he seems to have disappeared about the same time also.

Mary Jane Bracken
b. 15 Sep 1868 in Ohio County, Kentucky
d. 25 Apr 1946 in McLean County, Kentucky
Mary Jane was the daughter of William B. Bracken and Sarah Ann Morris (MRIN 68).
Mary Jane is buried in the Bevier Cemetery located in Livermore, McLean County, Kentucky

Grafton and Mary Jane married about 1891 in Butler County, Kentucky. (marriage date is estimated by the year of birth of their first known child)

The 8 known children of Grafton and Mary Jane were:

    b. 09 Jan 1892 in Kentucky (probably in Butler County)
    d. 23 Jun 1924 in Floyd County, Kentucky
Asa married Ethel Emery and had 3 daughters with her. Ethel died from Tuberculosis in 1923 and Asa re-married but no children from that marriage. Asa died in a mining accident and was buried in the Gibson Cemetery in Wayland, Floyd County, Kentucky.

  2. Millie B. Willoughby
    b. about 1894 in Kentucky (probably in Butler County)
    d. 25 Mar 1974 in Davies County, Kentucky
    Millie married Dr. Oscar Phegley

    d. before 1899
Both the 1900 and 1910 census state that a child died before the 1900 census was taken. Nothing more is know about this child yet.
