It is believed that Nick and Betty did not marry because their son did not use his fathers last name. However, a descendent of their son says that his children knew Nick Smith as their grandfather.

Nick married Nancy Artie Johnson in 1830 and had 10 known children with her.

Not much at all is known about Betty, the only source that I have ever seen her name on is on her son's death certificate. She is named as " Betty Hays". The informant was her great grandson, Robert Chaffins.

The only known child of Nick and Betty was:

Samuel Nelson Chaffins
b. 02 Jan 1829 in Kentucky
d. 19 Mar 1914 in Knott County, Kentucky
Samuel married Nancy Jane Sutton about 1849 (MRIN 102)
Samuel is buried in the Chaffins Family Cemetery
