E.C.
Wyatt's History of the Early Settlers of Dry
Fork, Rich Mountain and Shavers Mountain (1922-1923)
Published in The Randolph Enterprise Newspaper
Archived at the West Virginia Division
of Culture and History
My hard copies were provided by Cathy Thompson, who in
June of 2003 transcribed these articles and placed them on
the Randolph
County, WV mail archives at Rootsweb.
These 10 articles written by E.C. Wyatt (grandson of Ellis
A. Wyatt Sr.) are information that he had gathered about
some of the pioneer families of the Randolph County area.
The major advantage that he had over researchers today is
that he actually either knew most of the people that he
wrote about or he was able to interview someone that did.

Bible
Records of Mary Alice (Smith) Wyatt
These bible records were created by my maternal
great-grandmother, Mary Alice (Smith) Wyatt. She only
entered information for her husband, herself, her children
and one grandchild. She did not include her parents,
siblings or ancestors. After she passed away in 1958, her
son Jasper Wyatt, inherited her bible and added some more
information to her entries. After Jasper passed away in
2000, the bible was sent to a niece in New Jersey where it
currently is being kept. The bible records consist of 2
pages for this family, one being births and the other
being deaths.

Hu
Maxwell's History of Randolph County (West Virginia)
1898. The Acme Publishing Company. Morgantown, W. Va. Fourth
printing 1991. McClain Printing Company, Parsons, W. VA.
I know that I found my copy on either Amazon.com
or e-bay
although I can't recall which one.
About the book: This book is divided into 3 parts, those
being State, County and Family Histories. I have included
the "Preface Page" for the "Family
History" section, I know it's lengthy but I
feel that it is important information. Keep in mind that
this book was published in 1898, so these writings pertain
to that time frame.
Part 3: Family History - Preface
"The collection
of the family history which is here presented was a task
the difficulty and labor of which few can comprehend who
have never undertaken a similar work. It contains the
names, with mention of each, of more than ten thousand
persons, all of whom live or at one time lived, in
Randolph. It was constantly necessary to condense into
very small space history which deserved fuller mention;
otherwise many persons would have been left out. The older
families, in most cases, are presented more fully than
those of recent years, because they have been longer
connected with the county's history; but the aim has been
that each individual shall be placed properly, not only
before the present generation, but also before the people
of the future. Every effort has been made to avoid errors,
and it is confidently believed that there are not many in
the book; yet, from the fact that the material for the
family history was gathered from thousands of sources, and
many of those who furnished the information not agreeing
among themselves as to the same fact, it has been
sometimes impossible to decide who or which was right.
That which was considered the highest authority, however,
has always been followed. In collecting the family
sketches a number of persons furnished assistance,
visiting nearly all the houses in the county, and in doing
so, traveling in the aggregate about three thousand miles.
Of those who assisted in collecting data for the family
history the following may be mentioned: Charles J. and
Claude W. Maxwell collected nearly all the biographies in
Beverly, Valley Bend and Mingo Districts; they were
assisted in Valley Bend by Scott N. Swisher. In Middle
Fork District this work was done by C.G. Swecker; in
Roaring Creek and Huttonsville Districts by M.L. Daniels;
in New Interest, partly by Burns Isner and partly by John
J. Ferguson; in Dry Fork and Leadsville by John J.
Ferguson, assisted in the latter district by W.S. Ryan. A
portion of the work in Mingo was done by P.B. Conrad. In
addition to those, there was a valuable service rendered
by persons who saw the importance of the work and were
willing to assist. To all such the author feels under
lasting obligations. It is hoped that the compilation of
this book will awaken an interest among the people of
Randolph in the importance of collecting and preserving
their family history. Each family should have a history of
its own members and of its ancestors, and that is what
very few families in Randolph now possess."
Note: Being the intuitive person that Hu Maxwell was,
I wonder what happened to complete family histories that
he had to condense down for this book. I find it hard to
believe that he would have thrown them away. Wouldn't it
be something if they showed up some day and we could read
everything that our ancestors told them about their family
history.

The Arnold Hill Cemetery Association is a group of

an old abandoned, neglected cemetery. This group has put
forth an incredible effort to clean it up and to keep it
taken care of. In doing so, they created a website giving
burial information on those known to be interred there and
are doing genealogy research on the families connected to
it.

Census
Records
All of the census records used in this website were
obtained thru Ancestry.com. Many libraries have free
access to Ancestry.com or Heritage Quest. Census records
were started in 1790 as a way to determine the collection
of taxes and the appropriation of seats in the House of
Representatives. A Census Population Schedule is taken
every 10 years the first one being in 1790 and the last
one in 2000. Census records are locked away for 72 years
before they are released to the public, so the last census
that we have access to is the 1930 census which became
available in 2002. US Census Bureau Website: http://www.census.gov

"FamilySearch.org
is a non-profit service sponsored by The Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints. We believe that every person
is important and that families are meant to be both sacred
and eternal. We encourage all people to find their
ancestors and preserve their family histories. To help in
this great pursuit, the Church has been actively gathering
and preserving genealogical records worldwide for over 100
years. We have
learned that interest in family history is not limited by
culture, ethnicity or religious faith. People around the
world are innately and intensely interested in their
family heritage. Because the Church’s family history
efforts are funded by charitable donations, it freely
offers its resources to anyone interested in finding their
family’s roots."

Civil
War Soldiers and Sailors System
Web Address: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss
The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System is a
computerized database containing very basic facts about
servicemen who served on both sides during the Civil War.
The initial focus of the CWSS is the Names Index Project,
a project to enter names and other basic information from
6.3 million soldier records in the National Archives. The
facts about the soldiers were entered from records that
are indexed to many millions of other documents about
Union and Confederate Civil War soldiers maintained by the
National Archives and Records Administration. Other
information includes: histories of regiments in both the
Union and Confederate Armies, links to descriptions of 384
significant battles of the war, and other historical
information. Additional information about soldiers,
sailors, regiments, and battles, as well as
prisoner-of-war records and cemetery records, will be
added over time.
The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System (CWSS) is a
cooperative effort by the National Park Service (NPS) and
several other public and private partners, to computerize
information about the Civil War. The goal of the CWSS is
to increase the American people's understanding of this
decisive era in American history by making information
about it widely accessible. The CWSS will enable the
public to make a personal link between themselves and
history.

Find
A Grave
Web Address: http://www.findagrave.com/index.html
A free website that started out as a hobby site
dedicated to the final resting places of famous people or
those who where a part of a famous event, over the last
decade it has grown into a massive on-line cemetery with
literally hundreds of thousands of people from around the
world contributing cemetery photos, transcriptions and
short biographies everyday. There are over 11 Billion
records on-line. The genealogy community has definitely
seen what a great contribution this site is and has joined
in. I think that one of the best things about this website
is that it is interactive. You can leave virtual flowers,
notes, pictures, additional information. This is a
five-star site as far as I'm concerned. I've started a
virtual cemetery for all the families we are researching,
to check it out. This site is extremely addicting, just
remember that I warned you.
