Meadville Newspaper, Jan. 19, 1893, Death Notice: ...."Mr. Fay was a successful farmer and business man, and had acquired a handsome property. It is reported, however, that he was among the unfortunates in the Delamater bank failure (failed Dec. 5, 1890) losing something like $2000." The court case involving this bank failure was tried in 1903.

She married JOHN SAMUEL SHOEMAKER July 17, 1889 in Enterprise, Wallowa Co., OR, son of FREDERICK SHOEMAKER and ANNA MEYERS. He was born December 22, 1855 in Polk County, OR, and died January 04, 1926 in Santa Barbara, CA.
After Lizzie's children were born in Enterprise, OR her husband moved them to Kaiwiki, Mauna Loa, Hawaii in 1899. Six years later they moved to Cuba, & soon to the Isle of Pines and shortly after that they moved to Brownsville, Texas. The family then moved back to La Grande, OR and finally settled down in Santa Barbara, CA in 1910.
Mary Elizabeth, taught school in Hawaii, and in Mexico across the river from Brownsville, TX. When they moved to Santa Barbara she taught for a number of years there and then in 1926 she got what was called an Institutional Management Credential from the then Santa Barbara State College (now known as the University of California). After receiving her credential she became principal of Summerland Elementary School in Santa Barbara.
In 1929 while on her way to school her car was hit by a drunk driver and she was killed.
In the book," Reminiscences Of Wallowa County" by H. W. Oliver (1936), Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Fay is mentioned as a star pupil and later as a teacher. Richard Melville Fay, Mary Elizabeth's father, is also mentioned.
JOHN SAMUEL SHOEMAKER was a wild horse tamer, apiarist, manager of soda pop factory.

Both ELLWOOD FAY SHOEMAKER and GENEVIE IRMA FRUM SHOEMAKER were buried in Kanawha Co., WV.
After living in Enterprise, Oregon, Kaiwiki, Hawaii, Cuba, Isle of Pines, Brownsville, Texas, Ellwood's father, John Samuel Shoemaker, moved his family back to LaGrande, Oregon. They lived in LaGrande until 1910 when they moved to and finally settled in Santa Barbara, California.
Ellwood graduated from Santa Barbara High School. He was a draftsman for a number of years for J. Corbley and Poole Architects in Santa Barbara.
Ellwood was a corporal in the army during World War I (he did not see action) and his brother Rex served in the Navy on the ship called the St. Louis. Several years later in 1922 Ellwood entered college at Oregon State. After attending college he worked for Dravo Corp. & while working for Dravo he traveled to West Virginia in 1933. He was one of the construction design engineers on the Mason Bridge in Mason, WV at that time. Soon afterward Ellwood worked for Dupont Corp. at their plant in Belle, WV. In 1949 Ellwood joined Milam/BCM Engineering, Inc., in Dunbar, WV and worked there until 1980 retiring at the age of 87.
My father was a hard-working, quiet man who never had much to say about our ancestors, so the following is all I know of them. Tradition says that a Fay, Shoemaker or Elwood relative, father and/or son, fought at Bunker Hill in the American Revolution. Tradition also states that Frederick and John Samuel Shoemaker met and/or knew young Chief Joseph of the Nez Pierce tribe (this is probably true since Frederick was associated with Anderson C. Smith who did know young Chief Joseph very well). Another story that Dad told was of meeting a very old Aunt (Shoemaker, Elwood or Fay?) when he was five or six years old, who came to see his family in Enterprise, OR . He remembered her wearing a cap over a bald spot where she had been scalped by Indians when she was three or four years old. This scalping must have occurred back East in the 1820's. Unfortunately, Dad didn't remember her name and
It wasn't until 1993 that I became interested in our families past and by then my parents and their siblings were dead. So we, my husband & I, traveled to courthouses, archives, libraries, historical societies, cemeteries, small towns, large towns, the nation's capital, on backroads, paved & unpaved, on & on we went to Mass., New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Penn., Ohio, Virginia, Illinois, Oregon, & California----Fay's, Shoemaker's, Stone's, Ellwood's, Rury's, Brigham's, Ballard's, etc. waiting to be discovered & so it goes on & on, a wonderful adventure indeed. Rex joined the Naval reserve before World War I and served on the battleship Oregon. He was
called up for regular duty as soon as the U.S. entered the war. On the cruiser Saint Louis, he
made 16 round trips across the Atlantic during the war. After the war he returned to Santa
Barbara where he was a baker. During and after WWII, he worked at Port Hueneme Sea Bee
base.
Dorothy Smith was a descendant of the Vermont patriot of the American Revolution, Ethan Allen's youngest brother.

Winfield was an Assemblyman for California in the 1960's. He campaigned with Robert Kennedy in California about a week before Kennedy was assassinated. He said Kennedy's knees would shake while giving speeches. He said Robert & Ethel Kennedy were real laid-back people, not one bit stuffy. Winfield also got into an argument with Governor Ronald Reagan. There was fingering shaking & shouting between the two. You see, Winfield was a Democrat and that didn't sit well with Republican Reagan.
Winfield was also a delegate for California in the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, IL. Remember the riots & demonstrations? Winfield said it was unbelievable. Mayor Daly was causing a lot of trouble outside the convention as well as in the aisles of the Convention hall. It was a mess.

Walter Fay & Ada Johnson were married by the Justice of the Peace, Wallowa District, J.P. Noreloch at the house of Joseph Franklin Johnson and witnessed by J. F. Johnson, Arthur Johnson, Fannie Johnson, Minnie Oliver. Minnie was a friend of Ada Johnson.
Ada Johnson was the daughter of Joseph Franklin Johnson & Fannie (Applegate) Johnson. Fannie Applegate Johnson was the daughter of Charles Applegate (brother of Jessie Applegate of Yoncalla, OR). Fannie and her father are mentioned in the book, "Skookum," by Shannon Applegate (1992).
Military Record: Walter A. Fay was in the Spanish-American War being mustered in on June 27, 1898 in Walla Walla, WA as a private in Company F, 1 Reg't Washington Infantry for a period of 2 years.
Records indicate he was on duty as a scout and sharpshooter from March 26, 1899.
Records of March and April 1899: Attached to the scouting detach that accompanied the expedition to Santa Cruz, Philippine Islands and on April 9th & 10th took part in the battle at that place & was also engaged in the skirmish at Pasanyan, April 11th, the skirmish at Lamba, April 12th and the skirmish at Parte, April 13, 1899. Rejoined his company April 18, 1899 at Pasig.
Cause of Death: Circa 1915, Walter A. Fay worked for the American Ditch Company in Mexico & while surveying irrigation ditches in the state of Sonora Walter & his five Mexican workers were trapped in a cabin surrounded by Yaqui Indians under Poncho Villa. They were massacred and their cabin set on fire. It is said that being a sharpshooter Walter got a few Indians before he was killed. Walter & Ada had a small 40 acre ranch nearby & when she heard Walter was killed she got what she hoped were his ashes and left Mexico ending up in Nogales, Arizona. For awhile Ada worked for a doctor at a U. S. hospital in Nogales but eventually ended up in Modesto, CA at the home of Walter's sister, Helen Fay. Ada eventually returned to Wallowa Co., OR to her parents home. Ada lived in Wallowa Co., OR until the 1930's when she moved to Clarkston, WA. Ada never remarried.
Walter A. Fay is mentioned in the book, "This Valley (Wallowa Valley)" by Lola Johnson Hopkins (1978), "Walter A. Fay, one of the first forest rangers in Wallowa County, was a veteran of the Spanish American War. His folks lived north of Wallowa on a farm in the hills. In 1902 he married our Aunt Ada. His first assignment was at Chico in the Chesnumnus area where the first forestry cabin was built, about 1907. It was a typical log cabin of early Wallowa," page 64. "When Uncle Walter decided to join the American Ditch Company and to Old Mexico to work on development projects there, he and Aunt Ada left the Wallowa. That was about 1908." page 82.

Occupation: Helen Fay taught school in Wallowa Co., OR and was a dental hygienist in Modesto, CA.
In the book, School Days In The Wallowas, by Irene Locke Barklow (1992) Helen is mentioned as a teacher in the District 50, Chico, Wallowa Co., OR. Her sister Clara was also mentioned in the book.
In the book, Reminiscenses Of Wallowa County by H. W. Oliver (1936), Helen's sister Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" and father Richard Melville Fay are mentioned.
After Helen's brother Walter was killed in Mexico by Yaqui Indians Walter's wife Ada left Mexico and was in Nogales, AZ for awhile then ended up staying with Helen before finally going home to Wallowa Co., OR. Ada and her relatives never forgot Helen's kindness.
