ROWE, ANDREW

The Rau/Rowe Family of Southwestern Pennsylvania

It has been reported that Andreas Rau, born in 1764 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, was the son of Andreas Rau, one of three brothers who came to Pennsylvania from Germany circa 1750. One settled in New York, another in Virginia and still another in North Carolina. I cannot make a connection to our Andreas Rowe and these other Rau/Rowe Families. Our Andreas Rau fought in the Revolutionary War and married thrice. His first wife, Betsy Sell, was buried in Northampton County. He traveled to Westmoreland County with his second wife, Elizabeth Heintzelman. Land was purchased in his name near Greensburg, Pennsylvania, in 1801. Elizabeth died in 1816 and he married Margaret Schuster. He and Margaret are buried at the St. Clair Cemetery in Greensburg with a Revolutionaly War marker. Elizabeth was buried at the old German Cemetery which later became a parking lot.

Andreas had a son, Andrew Rowe, who had his first child, Elizabeth, baptized at the Brush Creek Luthern Church in 1812. He later located at Barren Run near Smithton in South Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he and his wife, and most of their children are buried in the United Methodist Cemetery.

I was born in the Fay-West area of Pennsylvania (along border of Fayette and Westmoreland Counties) approximately ten miles from Barren Run. Following is my line of descent from Andreas Rau/Rowe:

1) Andreas Rau m. Betsy Sell 2) Andrew Rowe m. Susannah Friedt/Freed 3) Elizabeth Rowe m. William Davenport 4) Catherine Davenport m. David Sechrist Shirey 5) Ella Mae Shirey m.
