However, the Germans started bombing the Rolls Royce factories at Derby and so they were returned to Brighton whihc was comparatively safer. However, John caught scarlet fever and couldn't go back to Brighton until he was released from Notingham Isolation Hospital.

Army number was 305549. Enlisted 17 November 1915. On 17 November 1915. He He went to Finsbury Road school in Brighton and was asked by a teacher to go into a solicitor's office to work, but his father refused as he wanted hin to help with work of his own at night. A lady Mrs Hunt who lived opposite looked after Vic and do the washing. He looked after Vic when he got home from school. They lived at 26 Essex Place. When he left school he got a job with a harness maker in St George's Road , working on Kemp Town Brewery jobs and repairing trunks and suit cases. The hours were just right for him to get home and make tea for his father. He was known as "Jack" and it would seem that most of his male antecedents were also known as Jack. He joined the Army and returned home in 1919. His Dad had Asthma and could only do a job of repairing shoes mainly for a boys school in Sussex Square. Jack was never out of work (as a labourer in the building trade) and he considered they were better off than before the war. His faher always suffered from asthma in the winter and eventually died in January 1928. When Jack married, his wife looked aftrer all the family at their new house at 8 Hereford Street. However, Jack's sister refused to pay a requested increase of 2 shillings a week towards the household expenses and so she left to live with an aunt. (From that day forward no exchanges seem to have been made between the parties involved). Bombed out in WWII moved from 8 Hereford Street to 49 Twineham Road - part of Whitehawk housing estate. At that time the estate had agood name; it has since detoriated into a "sink" estate. In world War II, he was directed to work at Allen West, an electrical starter maufacturer as part of the War Effort and he remained there until retirement. He met his second wife, Ruby who was a policeman's widow, on the factory floor .

Frances Toye daughter of 8 Warwick Street Brighton, stated that her father had complained of being sick about four o'clok on the preceeding afternoon, and had requested her to get him a chair. Decesed's strenght had failed nim whilst witness was doing as her asked her, and as he was falling to the floor, when she caught him in her arms, where he died almost immediately. Deceased had not been to work since the previous Monday, in consequence of being unwell and he had been under medical treatment - Dr Stowell of 3a Chrurch Street, Brighton stated thta he had visited and prescribed for the deceased last Tuesday. He saw nothing in his condition whch appeared ot be serious. Deceased was suffering from vomiting. Witeness had not seen him since he was asked for a certificate of death Being surprised at teh suddenness of the death, hge had made apost mortem examination, and found both lungs congested, the left being the worst of the two; the stomach was also somewhat irritated. he attributed the death of deceased to congection of the lungs accelerated by bilious vomiting. A verdict was given accordingly by the Cornoer mr a Freeman Gell. Above was taken from "Sussex Daily Post" of Friday 20th October 1882.
