The Ciopei Genealogy

The Ciopei Genealogy

By Jared L. Olar

May 2008-September 2017

NOTE: I am searching for anyone who might be descended from or related to my Olar, Paskar, Toderiuc, and Ciopei ancestors. I also am searching for members of the Giber/Krusniski family of Baudette, Minnesota. In December 2008 and March 2011, I had the joy of making contact with the descendants of Teofilact Ciopei of Tereblecea (born 1883), who was related in some way to my Ciopei ancestors. If you are a relative, or think you might be, I encourage you to please contact me by clicking here. See also our Family Search pages with family photographs hosted by Maritza Hreniuc in French, English, and Romanian. Thanks!

In researching my father's genealogy, I have received invaluable assistance not only from my parents and aunts and uncles and cousins, but also from The Bukovina Society of the Americas. Their website is a storehouse of very helpful information, and I have relied on some of the Society's articles to help write my accounts of my father's ancestors.

The Ciopei Surname

The surname "Ciopei" (with alternate forms "Ciopeiu" and "Copei") appears with relative frequency in the old Orthodox Church parish records of Tereblecea, Bucovina, from the 1800s and early 1900s. Though the Ciopeis were then a large family (or group of families), today the surname is all but extinct in Tereblecea. In 2010, Professor Ion Cretu published a 333-page history of the village of Tereblecea, called Tereblecea: un sat la margine de tara ("Tereblecea: A Village on the Border of the Country"). Included in Cretu's book is a directory of Tereblecea's contemporary residents, indexed by house number and surname. Cretu's directory shows just one person surnamed Ciopei, as follows:

House No. 234
Elena Ciopei, born 24 July 1927, daughter of Vasile
Maria Hiloboca, born 10 March 1958, daughter of Eugen -- probably Elena's daughter
Vladimir Hiloboca, born 8 Sept. 1956, son of Felix Hiloboca -- probably Maria's husband
Galina Hiloboca, born 28 April 1994, daughter of Vladimir Hiloboca (and Maria)

Presumbly Elena Ciopei of house no. 234 is related to the Ciopeis of Old Tereblecea. It seems likely that all of the Ciopeis living in Tereblecea in those days belonged to a single extended family. The meaning of "Ciopei" is uncertain, but it could be that it is related to the Romanian verbs cioprţi, "to hack, mangle, or chop," and ciopli, "to cut, whittle, or carve," and the noun cioplitor, "a carver." If so, this would be an occupational surname like Olar ("potter") and Pascar ("fisherman"), and would perhaps mean something like "woodcutter" or "carver."

The Ciopei Families of Tereblecea

As mentioned above, it seems likely that all of the Ciopeis of Tereblecea during the 1800s and early 1900s belonged to a single extended family. Much work remains to be done before it can be shown that the Tereblecea Ciopeis really were all related. Three Ciopei family groups have been identified in the old Tereblecea parish records. Those three groups are: 1) the Ioan Ciopei family, 2) the Michail Ciopei family, which is by far the largest family group, and 3) the Georgi Ciopei family. My father's maternal grandmother belonged to the first group, which was almost certainly related to the second group. Probably the third group also was connected to the first two groups. Below the three Ciopei family groups will be presented in order.

Six generations of Ciopeis

At this time I know little of the genealogy of my Ciopei ancestors, but I believe they were cousins of most, if not all, of the other Ciopeis of Tereblecea. Since the nature of their probable kinship is not yet known, I will first present what is known of my own Ciopeis and then present the known genealogy of the other Tereblecea Ciopeis.

First Generation

1. IOAN CIOPEI of Tereblecea, a peasant farmer who resided at house no. 6, born perhaps around 1830. He is named in several parish records, including the 1879 marriage record of my great-grandmother Iftima Ciopei, and the marriage records of a few of his other children, as "Ioan Copei." His wife, TODOSIA, born circa 1829, a resident of house no. 6, died at the age of 45 on 2 March 1874 in Tereblecea, and was buried there on 4 March 1874. The death record identifies her as "Todosia sotia lui Ioan Copei din Tereblecea." He is also very probably the "Ion Ciopei" of Tereblecea whose wife IUSTINA was, along with my great-grandmother Iftima, one of the godmothers of Maria Rus, who was baptised in Tereblecea on 23 March 1893. We have identified five daughters and two sons of Ioan in the Orthodox parish records of Tereblecea, all of them apparently born of his wife Todosia, whose maternal haplogroup consequently would be HV9, a female lineage historically found in Italy, Bohemia, Poland, Russia, Scandinavia, and Britain. It appears that Ioan died some time between April 1888 and January 1903 (see below under No. 5, Natalia Ciopei).

         2. TATIANA CIOPEI, born circa 1855
         3. IFTIMA CIOPEI ("Eftinca"), born circa 1857
         4. ECATERINA CIOPEI
         5. NATALIA CIOPEI, born 20 Aug. 1862
         6. EMANUIL CIOPEI, born circa 1866
         7. DOMNICA CIOPEI, born circa 1869
         8. CIRIL COPEI, born 8 June 1872

Second Generation

2. TATIANA CIOPEI, daughter of Ioan Ciopei, born circa 1855 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. On 24 Feb. 1880 in Tereblecea, Tatiana, age 24, a peasant farmer who resided at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, married a bachelor named STEFAN DANILIUC, age 24, born circa 1855, a peasant farmer who lived at house no. 4 in Berlinti, son of Vasilie Daniliuc. The marriage record identifies the bride as "Tetiana fiica lui Ioan Copei din Tereblecea" and the groom as "Stefan fiul lui Vasilie Daneliuc din Berlinti." The witnesses at the wedding were Simion Bejusco and his wife Eudochiea, and the priest was Father Dimitrie Seleschi. It should be noted that the 1918 marriage record of Tatiana's son says Tatiana and Stefan were then residents of house no. 4 in Starcea, a village close by Tereblecea. Is there an error somewhere, or did they move to Starcea and it is just a coincidence that their house number was the same in both Berlinti and Starcea?

It is possible that Tatiana's husband Stefan belonged to the same family as ALEXIE DANILIUC, a laborer of house no. 129 in Starcea, who in 1913 married NATALIA OLOIER (No. 38M below), daughter of Casian Oloier and Anastasia Ciopei. Another Ciopei connection to Starcea is seen in the marriage of TEOFILACT CIOPEI (No. 30M below), whose wife was Domnica Bejan of Starcea. These connections suggest that Tatiana and her siblings were cousins of the Michail Ciopei family. Tatiana and Stefan had at least one child:

        9. IOAN DANILIUC, born 2 Jan. 1882

3. IFTIMA CIOPEI ("Eftinca"), daughter of Ioan Ciopei, born circa 1857 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; date of death unknown. Autosomal DNA test has determined that Iftima belonged to the HV9 maternal haplogroup, a female lineage historically found in Italy, Bohemia, Poland, Russia, Scandinavia, and Britain. In the funeral memory book of my grandmother Rose, her parents are listed as "Leo and Eftinca Paskar." In the Orthodox Church parish records of Tereblecea, "Eftinca" is usually called "Iftima," but sometimes this name appears as "Iftimia" and "Iftinca." The name is derived from the Greek saints names Euthymius and Euthymia. On 8 Feb. 1879, at the age of 22, Iftima married LEON PASCAR ("Leo Paskar"), age 24, a bachelor from house no. 391, son of Constantin and Anna Pascar. Their marriage record gives their names as "Leon fiul lui Constantin Pascar din Tereblecea" and "Iftima fiica lui Ioan Copei din Tereblecea." Father Ilarion Dracinschi was the priest at their wedding, and the witnesses were Georgi and Paraschiva Rus. Georgi Rus later served as godfather to several of Leon and Iftima's children, and it appears that there was both friendship and kinship between the Rus family and the families of Iftima Ciopei and Leon Pascar. For example, Iftima's daughter Ana as well as Iustina, wife of SIMION CIOPEI of house no. 524 (see No. 4M below), twice served as two of the three godparents of children of Iustin Rus, on 14 Aug. 1895 and again on 2 May 1899. It is also no doubt significant that the wife of Georgi's son Ioan Rus was named PELAGIA PASCAR, very likely related to my Pascar ancestors.

Leon and Iftima had at least seven, perhaps eight, children. My grandmother's funeral book shows the names Helen, Dominica, Anastasia, and John under "Other members of family." Except for Anastasia, these relatives of my grandmother have been identified in the Tereblecea parish records as her sisters and brother (and "Anastasia" could be a garbled memory of her sisters Ana and Teodosia).

         ?? ANASTASIA PASKAR, born circa 1880 (?)
         -- ANA PASCAR, born 29 Jan. 1882
-- DOMNICA PASCARIU ("Dominica"), born 3 Jan. 1884
-- EUFROSINA PASCARIU ("Rose"), born 2 Oct. 1887
-- ELEANA PASCARI ("Helen"), born 13 May 1890
         -- TEODOSIA PASCARIU, born 24 Jan. 1893
-- IOAN PASCARI, ("John"), born 16 July 1895
         -- ZENOVIA PASCAR, born 26 Feb. 1898

4. ECATERINA CIOPEI, a resident of house no. 6 in Tereblecea, probably daughter of Ioan Ciopei. Since Ecaterina was a Ciopei of house no. 6, and was of the same generation as Ioan Ciopei's children who were also from house no. 6, it is almost certain that Ecaterina was also one of Ioan's children. Ecaterina's husband was GRIGORI GAVRILOAIEI, son of Ioan Gavriloaiei, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Grigori lived with his wife Ecaterina in house no. 6.

        10. IFTEMIE GAVRILOAIEI, born 21 Dec. 1882
        11. MARIA GAVRILOIEI, born 8 Sept. 1884
        12. CONSTANTIN GAVRILOIEI, born 28 May 1886
        13. GEORGIE GAVRILOAIEI, born 15 May 1888
        14. NATALIA GAVRILOAIEI, born 10 July 1889

5. NATALIA CIOPEI, daughter of Ioan Ciopei, born 20 Aug. 1862 probably in Tereblecea. As a 24-year-old resident of house no. 6, Natalia married firstly, on 12 Feb. 1887 in Tereblecea, a bachelor named IGNATIE NEMIGEAN, age 28, born circa 1858/9, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea who resided at house no. 117, son of Vasilie Nemigean. The marriage record identifies the bride and groom as "Natalia fiica lui Ion Ciopei" and "Ignatie fiul lui Vasilie Nemigean." The witnesses were Ilie, son of Ion Nemigean, and Ilie's wife Eudochia, peasant farmers of Tereblecea, and the priest was Father Ilarion Dracinschi. Natalia was a resident of house no. 117 when her daughter and eldest child Elisaveta was born in 1887, and still lived there in 1903 when she remarried as a widow. Ignatie Nemigean died in Tereblecea at the age of 44 on 29 Aug. 1902. The cause of death is listed as "marasmus" (malnutrition?). In the month prior to his death, Ignatie had suffered the grief of the deaths from scarlet fever of his son Vasilie, 13, who died in late July, and his eldest child Saveta, 15, who died just five days before her father. Ignatie's funeral and burial were 31 Aug. 1902 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi. On or after 26 Jan. 1903, Natalia married secondly in Opriseni (a village near Tereblecea) to 45-year-old widower IOAN BOGHIUC, a peasant farmer from house no. 40 in Opriseni, born 2 Feb. 1858, son of George Boghiuc. The marriage record of Natalia and Ioan identifies her as "widow of Ignati Nemigean and daughter of the late Ion Ciopei." That means Ioan Ciopei died between 7 April 1888 and January 1903.

        15. ELISAVETA NEMIGEAN (Saveta), born 28 March 1887
        16. VASILIE NEMIGEAN, born 2 April 1889
        17. ONUFREI NEMIGEAN, born 10 June 1891
        18. ECATERINA NEMIGEAN, born 14 April 1893
        19. DOMNICA NEMIGEAN, born 3 Nov. 1894
        20. EMANUIL NEMIGEAN, born 10 May 1897
        21. ILIE NEMIGEAN, born 28 July 1899

6. EMANUIL CIOPEI, son of Ioan Ciopei, born circa 1866 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. On 12 Feb. 1889 in Tereblecea, Emanuil, age 22, a peasant farmer living at house no. 6, married a maiden named AGRIPINA TCACI, age 20, a peasant farmer of house no. 167, daughter of Procopie Tcaci. The marriage record identifies the bridegroom and the bride as "Emanuil fiul lui Ioan Ciopei" and "Agripina fiica lui Procopie Tcaci." The witness were Ion Nemigean and his wife Margareta, and the priest was Father Ilarion Dracinschi. Emanuil and Agripina had at least seven children, daughters named Domnica, Tetiana (or Tatiana), Teodosia, Elena, and Veronica, and sons named Eugenie and Vasile. On 24 Feb. 1905, Emanuil and his wife Agripina witnessed the marriage of ALECSIE CIOPEI, son of GRIGORIE CIOPEI of house no. 668 in Tereblecea (see no. 3M below), one of the sons of Michail Ciopei. On 19 March 1911, Emanuil's wife Agripina served as a godmother at the baptism of Alecsie's son Georgie. A few years later, on 28 Jan. 1918, Emanuil ("Emanuil Ciopeiu") was one of the witnesses of the marriage of Alecsie's younger sister DOMNICA CIOPEIU, also of house no. 668. Emanuil's role in these weddings, and Agripina's role at the baptism, indicate that our Ciopei ancestors were cousins of the Michail Ciopei family, though their actual kinship is still to be determined.

        22. DOMNICA CIOPEI, born 4 Dec. 1889
        23. TATIANA CIOPEI, born 18 July 1892
        24. TEODOSIA CIOPEI, born 27 Aug. 1897
        25. ELENA CIOPEI, born 19 May 1900
        26. VERONICA CIOPEI, born 15 May 1903
        27. EUGENIE CIOPEIU, born 10 Nov. 1905
        28. VASILE CIOPEIU, born 10 May 1909

7. DOMNICA CIOPEI, daughter of Ioan Ciopei, born circa 1869 probably in Tereblecea. Domnica was one of the godmothers at the baptism of her nephew Vasilie Nimigean (No. 16 below) on 7 April 1888 in Tereblecea. Vasilie's baptismal record names her as "Domnica fiici lui Ion Ciopei." On 1 Oct. 1889 in Tereblecea, Domnica, age 20, a peasant farmer of house no. 6 in Tereblecea, married a bachelor from Opriseni named DIMITRIE ROIC, age 25, a soldier in the Austro-Hungarian infantry, son of Constantin and Maria (Moldovan) Roic. The marriage record identifies the bride and groom as "Domnica fiica lui Ion Ciopei" and "Dimitrie fiul lui Constantin Roic si a sotiei sale Maria nascuta Moldovan." The witnesses were Vasilie Biletchi and his wife Porfira, peasant farmers of Opriseni, and the priest was Father Ilarion Dracinschi.

It is possible that this Domnica Ciopei is the same one who married MIRON SANDUL, and who lived with Miron at house no. 8 in Tereblecea. Presumably house no. 8 was close to house no. 6, where my Ciopei ancestors lived. We know that in 1889, Ioan Ciopei's daughter Domnica married Dimitrie Roic of Opriseni, a village near Tereblecea. I have found no record in the Tereblecea microfilms of the marriage of any Domnica Ciopei with a Miron Sandul, but it is possible that Dimitrie Roic died and his widow Domnica remarried to Miron Sandul in Opriseni, then came back to Tereblecea. If Miron Sandul's wife Domnica Ciopei is the same as Ioan Ciopei's daughter of that name, then that means Ioan's daughter Domnica was probably none other than the midwife Domnica Sandul, who appears in a great many other Tereblecea baptismal records, including a large number of Ciopei baptismal records. (See the bottom of this page for the descendants of Miron Sandul and his wife Domnica Ciopei.)

8. CIRIL COPEI, son of Ioan and Todosia Ciopei, born 8 June 1872 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died when only 3 days old on 11 June 1872 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea; buried in Tereblecea on 13 June 1872. The death record identifies him as "Kiril fiul lui Ioan Kopei din Tereblecea."

Third Generation

9. IOAN DANILIUC, son of Stefan and Tatiana Daniliuc, born 2 Jan. 1882, in Tereblecea, or Berlinti, or Starcea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. On or soon after 4 Nov. 1918 in Starcea, Ioan, a peasant farmer residing at house no. 4 in Starcea, married PARASCHIVA MANDIUC, born 6 July 1894, a peasant farmer of house no. 470 in Tereblecea, daughter of Iacob and Acsenia (Romaniuc) Mandiuc. The marriage record identifies the bridegroom and the bride as "Ioan fiul lui Stefan Daniliuc si al sotiei sale Tatiana nascuta Ciopeiu" and "Paraschiva fiica lui Iacob Mandiuc si a sotiei sale Acsenia nascuta Romaniuc." The priest at the wedding was Father Ioan Tipa of Tereblecea, but the marriage record does not include the witnesses because the wedding took place in Starcea instead of Tereblecea.

10. IFTEMIE GAVRILOAIEI, son of Grigori and Ecaterina Gavriloaiei, born 21 Dec. 1882 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at Iftemie's birth was Todosia Olari of Tereblecea. Iftemie was baptised 23 Dec. 1882 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi. His godparents were Maria Tcaci, Constantin Scripcari, and Marina Pascari, peasant farmers of Tereblecea.

11. MARIA GAVRILOIEI, daughter of Grigori and Ecaterina Gavriloaiei, born 8 Sept. 1884 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at Maria's birth was Todosia Olari of Tereblecea. Maria was baptised 15 Sept. 1884 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi. Her godparents were Constantin Scripcari and Maria Tcaci, peasant farmers of Tereblecea.

12. CONSTANTIN GAVRILOIEI, Grigori and Ecaterina Gavriloaiei, born 28 May 1886 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at his birth was Todosia Olariu of Tereblecea. Constantin was baptised 31 May 1886 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmother was Iustina, daughter of Vasilie Pascariu, peasant farmer of Tereblecea.

13. GEORGIE GAVRILOAIEI, son of Grigori and Ecaterina Gavriloaiei, born 15 May 1888 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at his birth was Pelagia Rus of Tereblecea. Georgie was baptised 21 May 1888 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmother was Marina, spouse of Vasilie Pascari, peasant farmer of Tereblecea.

14. NATALIA GAVRILOAIEI, daughter of Grigori and Ecaterina Gavriloaiei, born 10 July 1889 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungaru. The midwife at Natalia's birth was Todosia Olariu of Tereblecea. Natalia was baptised 15 July 1889 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmothers were Iustina, daughter of Vasilie Pascari, and Agripina, spouse of Gerasim Oloieri, peasant farmers of Tereblecea.

15. ELISAVETA NEMIGEAN (Saveta), daughter of Ignatie and Natalia Nemigean, born 28 March 1887 at house no. 117 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary' died at age 15 on 24 Aug. 1902 in Tereblecea. The midwife at Elisaveta's birth was Iustina Bulbuc of Tereblecea. Elisaveta was baptised 1 April 1887 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi. Her godmother was Eudochia, spouse of Ilie Nemigean, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. In her death record, Elisaveta is called "Saveta fiica lui Ignat Nemigean din Tereblecea," a resident of house no. 117. Her cause of death was "scarlatina," scarlet fever. Elisaveta's younger brother had died of scarlet fever about a month earlier. Her funeral and burial was 25 Aug. 1902 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi.

16. VASILIE NEMIGEAN, son of Ignatie and Natalia Nemigean, born 2 April 1889 at house no. 117 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died at age 13 on 30 July 1902 in Tereblecea. The midwife at Vasilie's birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. Vasilie was baptised 7 April 1889 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi. The godmothers at his baptism were Eudochia, spouse of Ilie Nemigean, and DOMNICA CIOPEI (no. 7 above), daughter of Ion Ciopei, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Domnica was a sister of Vasilie's mother Natalia. In his death record, Vasilie is identified as "Vasile fiul lui Ignat Nemigean din Tereblecea," a resident of house no. 117. The cause of death was "scarlatina," scarlet fever. Vasilie's older sister Elisaveta also contracted scarlet fever and died of it about a month after Vasilie. His funeral and burial was 31 July 1902 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi.

17. ONUFREI NEMIGEAN, son of Ignatie and Natalia Nemigean, born 10 June 1891 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at Onufrei's birth was Iftima Cojocariu of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Ignatie lui Vasilie Nemigean" and "Natalia nascuta Ciopei," residents of house no. 117. He was baptised 15 June 1891 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmothers were Eudochia, spouse of Ilie Nemigean, peasant farmer of Tereblecea, and his aunt DOMNICA (No. 7 above), spouse of Dimitrie Roic, peasant farmer of Opriseni. According to Dan Holotescu, grandson of Onufrei's sister Domnica, Onufrei went to America as an adult. In corroboration of that family tradition, I have found two U.S. border crossing cards that are both dated 17 Dec. 1930, which show that on that date, a certain "Onofrei Nimigeon," age 35, and his wife "Elizabeth Nimigeon," age 33, both Romanian immigrants born in "Tereblecea, Rumania," obtained permission to cross from Windsor, Ontario, Canada, to Detroit, Michigan, and would be allowed to stay in the United States for a year and a day.  From these documents, we know that Onufrei's wife was ELISAVETA, born June 1897 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The card of Onofrei Nimigeon says he was then aged 35 years 6 months, which would place his date of birth in June 1895 -- but no doubt he either forgot his actual age or perhaps lied about his true age for some reason, because he was actually 39 years 6 months.  Onofrei's border crossing card says he then worked as carpenter in Windsor, Ontario, living with his wife at 1321 "Saylors" (?), having come to Canada on the S.S. Montezuma, a ship of the Canadian Pacific Railway Line which landed at St. John, New Brunswick, on 22 March 1912.  That date of landing is incorrect, however, because the S.S. Montezuma did not land at St. John on that date -- in fact, the Montezuma left Antwerp, Belgium, on 22 Feb. 1912, and landed at St. John on 8 March 1912.  The date of "22 March" probably arose from Onofrei's having mistakenly mashed together "22 Feb." with "8 March" -- but in any event, Onofrei's name is not on the Montezuma's passenger manifest for that month (was he a stowaway?).  Onofrei's card says that he was 5 feet 8 inches in height, of medium complexion, with brown hair and brown eyes, and knew how to read.  In comparison, Elizabeth's card says she was only 5 feet tall, of medium complexion, with brown hair and brown eyes, but did not know how to read.  Her age was given as 33 years 6 months, which would place her date of birth in June 1897.  She had arrived in Canada in June 1914, having landed at Quebec City, but she did not know the name of the ship on which she'd arrived.  Neither Onofrei nor Elizabeth had ever been in the U.S. before, and their intention was to stay with a certain Mrs. Lee Suzuko of 20117 Cameron Ave., Detroit.

18. ECATERINA NEMIGEAN, daughter of Ignatie and Natalia Nemigean, born 14 April 1893 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died 20 May 1893 in Tereblecea. The midwife at Ecaterina's birth was Iftima Cojocariu of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record names her parents as "Ignatie a lui Vasile Nemigean" and "Natalia nascuta Ciopei," residents of house no. 117. Ecaterina was baptised 17 April 1893 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godmothers were Eudochia, spouse of Ilie Nemigean, and Anna, spouse of Simeon Nemigean, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Ecaterina died when she was just a month old, with the cause of death listed as "de raul copulor." Her funeral and burial were 21 May 1893 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi.

19. DOMNICA NEMIGEAN, daughter of Ignatie and Natalia Nemigean, born 3 Nov. 1894 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary, died 1950 in Grabati, Romania. The midwife at Domnica's birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Ignatie lui Vasile Nemigean" and "Natalia nascuta Ciopei," residents of house no. 117. Domnica was baptised 10 Nov. 1894 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godmothers were Eudochia, wife of Ilie Nemigean, and Anna, wife of Simion Nemigean, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. According to Domnica's grandson Dan Holotescu, Domnica married DUMITRU HOLOTIUC, whose surname is a Ukrainian formation signifying origin or descent from Voloka. Domnica and Dumitru had a son named Manuil.

        29. MANUIL HOLOTIUC (Manuil Holotescu)

20. EMANUIL NEMIGEAN, son of Ignatie and Natalia Nemigean, born 10 May 1897 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at Emanuil's birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Ignatie lui Vasile Nemigean" and "Natalia nascuta Ciopei," residents of house no. 117. He was baptised 17 May 1897 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmother was Tetiana, daughter of Ilie Nemigean, peasant farmer of Tereblecea.

21. ILIE NEMIGEAN, son of Ignatie and Natalia Nemigean, born 28 July 1899 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died at age 1 on 24 Sept. 1900 in Tereblecea. The midwife at Ilie's birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. As with his older siblings, his baptismal record identifies his parents as "Ignatie lui Vasile Nemigean" and "Natalia nascuta Ciopei," residents of house no. 117. He was baptised 31 July 1899 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmother was Eudochia, wife of Ilie Nemigean, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Ilie's death record names him as "Ilie fiul lui Ignatie Nimigean din Tereblecea," and specifies the cause of death as "catar bronchial." His funeral and burial were 26 Sept. 1900 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi.

22. DOMNICA CIOPEI, daughter of Emanuil and Agripina Ciopei, born 4 Dec. 1889 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, District of Siret, Duchy of Bucovina, Austro-Hungarian Empire. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Emanuil Ciopei" and "Agripina Tcaci." The midwife at her birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. Domnica was baptised 9 Dec. 1889 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi. The godparents at her baptism were Teodor Tcaci (no doubt related to her mother Agripina Tcaci) and "Mgdalina" (i.e. Magdalina), wife of Ion Nemigean, all peasant farmers of Tereblecea. On 31 Oct. 1910 in Tereblecea, at the age of 20 years 11 months, Domnica, then a resident of house no. 6, married TEODOR ROTARIU, age 25, born 19 Oct. 1885, a bachelor of house no. 638, son of Ioan Rotariu and Minodora Orsovschi of Tereblecea. The wedding was witnessed by Ambrosie Tcaciu and his wife Maria of Tereblecea, presumably related to Domnica's mother. The priest at the wedding was Father Dimitrie Georgescu. Domnica and Teodor had two daughters and a son:

        30. MINODORA ROTARIU, born 15 July 1912
        31. MARIA ROTARIU, born 27 Aug. 1914
        32. IOAN ROTARIU, born 24 Oct. 1918

23. TETIANA CIOPEI (Tatiana), daughter of Emanuil and Agripina Ciopei, born 18 July 1892 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria Hungary. Her baptismal record names her parents as "Emanuil a lui Ion Ciopei" and "Agripina nascuta Tcaci," residents of house no. 6. The midwife at Tatiana's birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. Tatiana was baptised 26 July 1892 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi. Her godmothers were Margareta, wife of Ion Nemigean, and Iustina Pascar, wife of Teodor Tcaci, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. On 27 Oct. 1919, at the age of 27 years 3 months, Tatiana, then a maiden, married a bachelor named DIMITRIE NIMIGEAN, born 22 Feb. 1895 in Tereblecea, a peasant farmer of house no. 682, son of Vasilie and Ana (Dubau) Nimigean. Tatiana was then residing at house no. 6. The witnesses at the marriage were Teodor Nimigean and spouse Pelagia, peasant farmers of Tereblecea, and the priest was Father Ioan Tipa.

24. TEODOSIA CIOPEI, daughter of Emanuil and Agripina Ciopei, born 27 Aug. 1897 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at her birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. Teodosia was baptised 31 Aug. 1897 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godparents were Ion Gabor and Margarita, wife of Ion Nemigean, peasant farmers of Tereblecea.

25. ELENA CIOPEI, daughter of Emanuil and Agripina Ciopei, born 19 May 1900 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at her birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. Elena was baptised 21 May 1900 by Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and her godmother was Domnica, daughter of Ion Gabor, peasant farmer of Tereblecea.

26. VERONICA CIOPEI, daughter of Emanuil and Agripina Ciopei, born 15 May 1903 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at her birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. Veronica was baptised 18 May 1903 by Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and her godmother was Margareta, wife of Ion Nimigian, peasant farmer of Tereblecea.

27. EUGENIE CIOPEIU, son of Emanuil and Agripina Ciopei, born 10 Nov. 1905 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at his birth was Iftimia Kojocar of Tereblecea. 28. VASILE CIOPEIU, son of Emanuil and Agripina Ciopei, born 10 May 1909 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at his birth was Ecaterina Palamariuc of Tereblecea. Vasile was baptised 17 May 1909 by Father Dimitrie Georgescu, and his godmothers were Margareta, wife of Ioan son of Vasile Nimigean, and Domnica, wife of Alecsandru Patras, peasant farmers of Tereblecea.

Fourth Generation

29. MANUIL HOLOTIUC (Manuil Holotescu), son of Dumitru and Domnica (Ciopei) Holotiuc. "Holotescu" is a Romanian variant of "Holotiuc." Manuil's wife was named IOANA. They lived at Opriseni, a village near Tereblecea in Bucovina. Manuil and Ioana had a son named Dan.

        33. DAN HOLOTESCU

30. MINODORA ROTARIU, daughter of Teodor and Domnica Rotariu, born 15 July 1912 in Tereblecea, District of Siret, Duchy of Bucovina, Austro-Hungarian Empire. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Toader al lui Ioan Rotariu" and "Domnica nascuta Ciopeiu." The midwife at her birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea. Minodora was baptised 21 July 1912 by Father Dimitrie Georgescu. The godparents at her baptism were Ambrosie Tcaciu and Iustina, wife of Toader Tcaciu (both no doubt related to Minodora's maternal grandmother Agripina Tcaci), peasant farmers of Tereblecea.

31. MARIA ROTARIU, daughter of Teodor and Domnica Rotariu, born 27 Aug. 1914 in Tereblecea, District of Siret, Duchy of Bucovina, Austro-Hungarian Empire. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Teodor Rotariu, fiul lui Ioan Rotariu si al sotiei sale Minodora nascuta Orsovschi" and "Domnica fiica lui Emanuil Ciopeiu si a sotiei sale Agripina nascuta Tcaciu." The midwife at her birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea. Maria was baptised 31 Aug. 1914 by Father Ioan Tipa. Her godfather was Ambrosie Tcaciu, peasant farmer of Tereblecea, no doubt related to Maria's maternal grandmother Agripina Tcaci.

32. IOAN ROTARIU, son of Teodor and Domnica Rotariu, born 24 Oct. 1918 in Tereblecea, District of Siret, Duchy of Bucovina, Austro-Hungarian Empire. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Teodor Rotariu, fiul lui Ioan Rotariu si al sotiei sale Minodora nascuta Orsovschi" and "Domnica fiica lui Emanuil Ciopeiu si a sotiei sale Agripina nascuta Tcaciu." The midwife at his birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea. Ioan was baptised 3 Nov. 1918 by Father Ioan Tipa. His godparents were Cosma Olariu, Maria wife of Ambrosie Tcaciu (no doubt related to Ioan's maternal grandmother Agripina Tcaci), and Sofia wife of Grigorie Mintioan, peasant farmers of Tereblecea.

The Michail Ciopei Family of Tereblecea

Having sketched the family tree of my Ciopei ancestors and cousins, I proceed now to the vast extended family of Michail Ciopei, to whom my Ciopeis were related in some way. Seven generations of this family have been plotted.

First Generation

1M. MICHAIL CIOPEI of Tereblecea, almost certainly a peasant farmer, born perhaps around 1810 or earlier. He probably lived at house no. 330 in Tereblecea, where some of his children are known to have lived earlier in their lives. In the 1870 marriage record of his daughter, Michail's wife is named ERINA [???]ARIU (I have not yet been able to fully transliterate Erina's maiden name, because the marriage record is written in old Romanian cursive Cyrillic). He apparently married more than once, since it is impossible that the same woman who was mother of Michail's son Macsim around 1830 also gave birth to his son Constantin around 1860. Michail's name variously appears in the Orthodox Church parish records of Tereblecea as "Michail," "Michai," "Mihai," "Mihaiu," and "Mihail." He was the ancestor of a large family, and it seems very likely that almost all, if not all, of the Ciopeis living in Tereblecea in the 1800s and early 1900s were his descendants or at least his close kin. In particular it appears that my own Ciopei ancestors were related to the Michail Ciopei family. Based on chronological considerations, my great-great-grandfather IOAN CIOPEI of house no. 6 could have been a son or perhaps a brother of Michail. In tracing the genealogy of Michail Ciopei's family, five sons of Michail have been identified, as well as one daughter.

2M. MACSIM CIOPEI, born circa 1830
         3M. SIMION CIOPEI, born 9 Feb. 1847
4M. ANASTASIA CIOPEI (Nastasia), born circa 1848
5M. GRIGORIE CIOPEI, born circa 1853
6M. IUSTIN CIOPEI, born circa 1856
7M. CONSTANTIN CIOPEI, born circa 1860

Second Generation

2M. MACSIM CIOPEI, son of Michail Ciopei of Tereblecea, born circa 1830, died at age 71 on 20 Feb. 1901 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The cause of his death is given as "aprindere de plamaie" (lung inflammation, perhaps pneumonia). Macsim was buried in Tereblecea on 21 Feb. 1901, and his death record includes the remarkable comment that his funeral and burial were conducted by a group of priests ("sau inmormanlat cu sobor preotesc"), including Father Stefan Seleschi, the pastor of Tereblecea's Romanian Orthodox Church. This notation in his death record indicates that Macsim must have had some prominence in his community and his church. Macsim, a peasant farmer who resided at house no. 532 in Tereblecea, also appears in Tereblecea's Orthodox Church parish records as "Machsim" and "Maxim." It was probably around 1860-1864 that he married IULIANA STRUGARIU, with whom he had at least 11 children:

8M. VASA CIOPEI (Vassa), born 19 Aug. 1865
9M. MARIA CIOPEI, born circa 1867
10M. EUGENIA CIOPEI (Efigenia, Ifigenia), born circa 1869
        11M. IOAN COPEI, born 11 June 1872
12M. TEODOR CIOPEI (Toader), born 15 May 1873
13M. DIMITRIE CIOPEI, born circa 1875
        14M. CONSTANTIN CIOPEI, born 1 May 1882
        15M. EUFROSINA CIOPEI, born 16 Jan. 1884
        16M. NATALIA CIOPEI, born 26 July 1886
        17M. IOAN CIOPEI, born 17 Sept. 1888
        18M. SIMEON CIOPEI, born 12 April 1891

3M. SIMION CIOPEI, son of Michail Ciopei of Tereblecea, born 9 Feb. 1847, probably in Tereblecea, died 18 Oct. 1910 at the age of 62 years 8 months in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The cause of death was "de oftiga" (consumption or tuberculosis). Simion's funeral and burial in Tereblecea were conducted by Father Dimitrie Georgescu on 20 Oct. 1910. The death record gives his name as "Simeon al lui Mihaiu Ciopeiu din Tereblecea." Like his brothers, Simion was a peasant farmer of Tereblecea. He and his wife IUSTINA EPURE at first lived at house no. 330, but later resided at house no. 524. In 1895 and again in 1899, Iustina joined with my grandmother's older sister ANA PASCAR (see No. 3 above) in acting as godmothers to sons of Iustin Rus. Members of the Rus family had served as godparents to Ana Pascar and her siblings, and Ana's mother was herself a Ciopei. These facts are probably additional evidence of the kinship between my Ciopei ancestors and the Michail Ciopei family.

19M. GRIGORIE CIOPEI, born circa 1879
        20M. GEORGIE CIOPEI, born 21 April 1881
        21M. IOAN CIOPEI, born 21 April 1881
22M. TEOFILACT CIOPEI (Teofil), born 4 Jan. 1883
        23M. MARIA CIOPEI, born 5 June 1885
        24M. DIMITRIE CIOPEI, born 30 Oct. 1886

4M. ANASTASIA CIOPEI, daughter of Michail and Erina Ciopei, born circa 1848 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. On 1 Nov. 1870 in Tereblecea, Anastasia, age 22, a resident of house no. 330, married CASIAN OLOIER, born 29 Feb. 1840, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea who resided at house no. 163, son of Onufrei Oloier. The marriage record identifies the bride and groom as "Nastasia fiica lui Mihai Ciopei si a sotia sale Erina nascuta [???]ariu din Tereblecea" and "Casian fiul lui Onufrei Oloer din Tereblecea." The witnesses were Ioan Mintion and his wife Ancelina (?) of Tereblecea, and the priest was Father Dimitrie Seleschi. In the Orthodox Church parish records of Tereblecea, Anastasia's name appears variously as "Noestasia," "Nastasia," as well as "Anastasia." Casian's name is sometimes spelled in these records as "Cassian," while his surname appears as "Oloer," "Oloier," "Oloeri," "Oloeriu," "Oloieri," and "Oloieriu." He died in Tereblecea on 29 Dec. 1913 at the age of 73 years 10 months. In his death record, his name is given as "Casian al lui Onofreiu Oloieriu din Tereblecea," and the cause of death is listed as "marasmus." Casian's funeral and burial were 31 Dec. 1913 by Father Dimitrie Georgescu. Anastasia was one of the two godmothers at the 1883 baptism of SERGEI CIOPEI, son of Constantin Ciopei (see No. 7M below), while Anastasia's oldest known child, Matrona Oloier, was one of the two godmothers at the 1886 baptism of Sergie's younger brother ALECSIE CIOPEI. It was quite common for aunts and uncles to serve as godparents for their nieces and nephews, or for older cousins to be godparents to younger cousins. Anastasia and her husband Casian had three daughters and three sons:

25M. MATRONA OLOER, born circa 1873 or 1876
        26M. IOAN OLOER, born 26 Jan. 1879
        27M. DOMNICA OLOIER, born 22 April 1882
        28M. PAVEL OLOERI, born 26 Jan. 1884
        29M. NICOLAI OLOIERI, born 6 May 1886
        30M. NATALIA OLOIER, born 27 Feb. 1892

5M. GRIGORIE CIOPEI, son of Michail Ciopei of Tereblecea, born circa 1853 in Tereblecea. Grigorie, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea, lived at first at house no. 330, later moving to house no. 668 around 1891 or 1892. He died probably between 31 Dec. 1913 and 28 Jan. 1918. He certainly died before January 1918, at which time he is referred to as "the late" Grigorie Ciopei in his daughter Domnica's marriage record. Grigorie was apparently still alive by the end of 1913, as his death record does not appear in the parish records prior to then. On 17 Feb. 1880 in Tereblecea, Grigorie, age 26, a resident of house no. 330, married a maiden named ELISAVETA CUPCEC (also called "Saveta"), age 20, born circa 1859, a peasant farmer of house no. 232, daughter of Damian and Zoita (Pascariu) Cupcec. The witnesses at the marriage were Nicolai Nemigian and his wife Domnica, peasant farmers of Tereblecea, and the priest was Father Dimitrie Seleschi. At the time of his marriage, Grigorie was a soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army. The marriage record identifies the bridegroom and bride as "Grigorie fiul lui Michail Copei din Tereblecea, Ostasi dela Landurfe (?) 15 (or 75?) Bat. 4 Comp." and "Elisaveta fiica lui Demiean Cupcec din Tereblecea." The following ten children of Grigorie and Elisaveta have been identified in the Tereblecea parish records:

        31M. ALECSIE CIOPEI, born 17 March 1881
        32M. MICHAIL CIOPEI, born 7 April 1883
        33M. GEORGIE CIOPEI, born 19 April 1885
34M. LEONTINA CIOPEI, born perhaps circa 1887
        35M. IOAN CIOPEI, born 16 Sept. 1890
        36M. DOMNICA CIOPEI, born 2 Feb. 1893
        37M. ELEANA CIOPEI, born 9 June 1895
38M. ECATERINA CIOPEI (Catrina), born 27 Sept. 1897
        39M. EUFROSINA CIOPEI, born 14 Nov. 1899
        40M. ZENOVIA CIOPEI, born 27 July 1903

6M. IUSTIN CIOPEI, son of Michail Ciopei, born circa 1856 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Iustin, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea, lived at house no. 330. On 10 Nov. 1885 in Tereblecea, Iustin, age 29, married a maiden named MARIA DUBAU, age 24, born circa 1861, a peasant farmer residing at house no. 253, daughter of Vasilie Dubau. The marriage record identifies the bridegroom and bride as "Iustin fiul lui Michail Copei" and "Maria fiica lui Vasilie Dubau." The witnesses were Pavel Nemigean and his wife Pelagia, peasant farmers of Tereblecea, and the priest was Father Dimitrie Seleschi. Iustin and Maria endured the sorrowful loss of four of their children in infancy or childhood, including two daughters who died very soon after they were born.

        40M. IOAN CIOPEI, born 22 Feb. 1888
        41M. EUSEBIE CIOPEI, born 18 Jan. 1890
        42M. MARIA CIOPEI, born 17 June 1892
        43M. ELISAVETA CIOPEI, born 17 May 1893
        44M. PAUL CIOPEI, born 7 July 1894
        45M. GEORGIE CIOPEI, born 15 June 1897
        46M. EUGENIA CIOPEI, born 21 Nov. 1899
        47M. DIMITRIE CIOPEI, born 23 Oct. 1902
        48M. CONSTANTIN CIOPEI, born 11 May 1908

7M. CONSTANTIN CIOPEI, son of Michail Ciopei, born circa 1860 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died perhaps in the spring or summer of 1887 in Tereblecea. Constantin, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea, lived at house no. 330 until his marriage, after which he lived with his wife at house no. 185. On 30 Jan. 1883 in Tereblecea, Constantin, age 22, married CHARITINA SLEMCO, age 28, born circa 1854, peasant woman of house no. 185, widow of ANANIE PAULIUC. The marriage record identifies the bridegroom and bride as "Constantin fiul lui Michail Copei" and "Charitina voedana dupoe Ananie Pauliuc." Charitina was the mother of two of Constantin's three sons. On 13 April 1887, EUDOCHIA, wife of Constantin Ciopei, was the godmother of Ierina Cosic, illegitimate daughter of Matrona Cosic. Eudochia's husband Constantin was presumably the same as Constantin Ciopei, son of Michail Ciopei. If so, his wife Charitina must have died in 1886, after or during the birth of their son Alecsie, and Constantin would have remarried in late 1886 or early 1887. However, if Eudochia's husband Constantin Ciopei is the same as Charitina's husband Constantin Ciopei, then Constantin must have died in the spring or summer of 1887, because Eudochia remarried in the autumn of that year. On 25 Oct. 1887 in Tereblecea, Eudochia, age 34, a widower living at house no. 416, married a bachelor named NECHITA SLEMCO, age 25, a soldier in the Austrian army who lived at house no. 274, son of Ion and Ierina (Dubau) Slemco. The marriage record identifies the bride as "Eudochia vadana dupa Constantin Ciopei" (Eudochia, widow of Constantin Ciopei).

49M. ION CIOPEI, born circa 1879
        50M. SERGIE CIOPEI, born 18 Nov. 1883
        51M. ALECSIE CIOPEI, born 13 March 1886

Third Generation

8M. VASA CIOPEI (Vassa), daughter of Macsim and Iuliana Ciopei, born 19 Aug. 1865 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Prior to her first marriage, Vasa lived at house no. 532 in Tereblecea. On 12 Feb. 1887 in Tereblecea, Vasa, age 21, married a bachelor named ACACHIE CUPCIC (sometimes called "Agapie"), born circa 1859, a peasant farmer who resided at house no. 519, son of Foca Cupcic. The marriage record identifies the bride and groom as "Vasa fiica lui Macsim Ciopei" and "Acachie fiul lui Foca Cupcic." The witnesses were Nicolai Nemigean and his wife Domnica, peasant farmers of Tereblecea, and the priest was Father Ilarion Dracinschi. Vasa and Acachie resided at house no. 519 in Tereblecea and are known to have had nine children. Acachie died in Tereblecea on 5 Feb. 1907 at the age of 47. His death record identifies him as "Achachie alui Foca Cupcic," and lists the cause of death as "de epilepsie," a seizure or stroke. Acachie's funeral and burial were 7 Feb. 1907 by Father Gheorghe Ciuperca. On 18 May 1914, at the age of 48 years 9 months, Vasa, still living at house no. 519, married as her second husband a widower named SIMEON COJOCARIU, a peasant farmer of house no. 723 in Tereblecea, son of Vasilie and Domnica (Carliciuc) Cojocariu. The marriage record gives her name as "Vassa daughter of Maxim Ciopeiu and his spouse Iuliana Strugar, widow of Acachie Cupcic." The witnesses at the marriage were Spiridon Cojocariu and his wife Eleana, and the priest was Father Ioan Tipa. Vasa was apparently very close to her younger sister Eugenia, not only joining her husband Acachie in witnessing Eugenia's marriage but also serving as godmother to most of Eugenia's children.

        52M. LEONTINA CUPCIC, born 18 April 1888
        53M. IOSIF CUPCIC, born 29 March 1890
        54M. DIMITRIE CUPCIC, born 7 Oct. 1894
        55M. DOMNICA CUPCEC, born 16 Jan. 1896
        56M. ILIE CUPCEC, born 14 July 1897
57M. TOADER CUPCIC (Teodor), born 16 June 1900
        58M. EUFROSINA CUPCEC, born 2 June 1902
        59M. ANNA CUPCEC, born 20 Aug. 1904
        60M. MARIA CUPCEC, born 13 July 1906

9M. MARIA CIOPEI, daughter of Macsim and Iuliana Ciopei, born circa 1867 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Maria lived with her parents at house no. 532 until her marriage. When she was 24 years old, on 28 Feb. 1891 in Tereblecea, she married a bachelor named IOSIF EPURE, born circa 1867, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea, son of Nichita Epure. The witnesses at the wedding were Nicolai Nemigean and his wife Domnica, peasant farmers Tereblecea, and the priest was Father Ilarion Dracinschi. After their wedding, Iosif and Maria resided at Iosif's residence. However, the handwriting in the various records pertaining to this family makes it difficult to tell what their house number was. It could be house no. 316, 346, 376, or 396. Their wedding record seems to show Iosif as a resident of house no. 346, but the birth records of their daughters Elena and Aspasia and son Georgie clearly show house no. 376. Iosif and Maria are known to have had seven children:

        61M. NICOLAI EPURE, born 1 Dec. 1895
        62M. DOMNICA EPURE, born 10 Nov. 1897
        63M. GAVRIIL EPURE, born 5 Nov. 1899
        64M. EUFROSINA EPURE, born 28 March 1901
        65M. ELENA EPURE, born 28 Sept. 1902
        66M. GEORGIE EPURE, born 12 April 1905
        67M. ASPASIA EPURE, born 8 Feb. 1908

10M. EUGENIA CIOPEI (Efigenia, Ifigenia), daughter of Macsim and Iuliana Ciopei, born circa 1869 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Eugenia lived with her parents at house no. 532 until her marriage. When she was 24 years old, on 24 Jan. 1893 in Tereblecea, Eugenia married a bachelor named FOCA ACSENIUC (or Axeniuc), a peasant farmer of house no. 479, son of Teodor Acseniuc. In the marriage record, they are identified as "Foca a lui Theodor Acseniuc" and "Efigenia fiica lui Macsim Ciopei." The priest at the wedding was Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and the witnesses were Agapie Cupcic and his wife Vassa, older sister of Eugenia. Eugenia and Foca had 13 children.

        68M. LEONTINA ACSENIUC, born 28 Feb. 1895
        69M. DOMNICA ACSENIUC, born 9 April 1896
        70M. ION ACSENIUC, born 22 May 1897

        73M. ECATERINA ACSENIUC, born 21 July 1902
        74M. GEORGE ACSENIUC, born 17 April 1904
        75M. GEORGE ACSENIUC, born 19 April 1905

        80M. ANNA ACSENIUC, born 30 July 1912

11M. IOAN COPEI, son of Macsim and Iuliana Ciopei, born 11 June 1872 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died shortly after he was born on 11 June 1872; buried 13 June 1872 in Tereblecea. The death record identifies him as "Ioan fiul lui Macsim Copei din Tereblecea," and says he resided at house no. 534 (probably an error for "532").

12M. TEODOR CIOPEI (Toader), son of Macsim and Iuliana Ciopei, born 15 May 1873 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Teodor was a resident of house no. 532. On 10 Feb. 1900 in Tereblecea, Teodor, age 26, married a maiden named AGRIPINA NIMIGEAN, age 18, born 27 June 1881 probably in Tereblecea, a peasant farmer of house no. 16, daughter of Mafteiu Nimigean of Tereblecea, son of Andrei Nimigean. The priest at the wedding was Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and the witnesses were Leon and Catrina Socaci of Tereblecea. The marriage record identifies them as "Toader a lui Maxim Ciopei" and "Agripina fiica lui Mafteiu a lui Andrei Nimigean." Teodor and Agripina had but one child, a son born in 1901 who lived only a day. Agripina died on 10 Aug. 1903 at house no. 532, with the cause of death given as "aprinderea plamailor" (lung inflammation, probably pneumonia). She was buried 12 Aug. 1903 in Tereblecea, with Father Vichenti Simiganoschi conducting her funeral and burial. In her death record, she is called "Agripina spouse of Teodor Ciopei" and is said to be 23 years old (actually she was 22).

About six months after his first wife's death, Teodor, still residing at house no. 532, married in Opriseni on or soon after 30 Jan. 1904 to a maiden named IOANA PITUL, age 24, born 6 Sept. 1879, a resident of house no. 132 in Opriseni, daughter of Vasile Pitul. The priest at the wedding was Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, but because the marriage took place in Opriseni rather than Tereblecea, the Tereblecea parish register does not list the witnesses.

        81M. ION CIOPEI, born 9 March 1901

13M. DIMITRIE CIOPEI, son of Macsim and Iuliana Ciopei, born circa 1875 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Dimitrie, a resident of house no. 532, died at age 18 on 28 June 1893, with Father Ilarion Dracinschi conducting his funeral and burial on 29 June 1893. The cause of death is given as "de durere de inima" (?).

14M. CONSTANTIN CIOPEI, son of Macsim and Iuliana Ciopei, born 1 May 1882 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at his birth was Todosia Olari of Tereblecea. Constantin was baptised 5 May 1882 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godfather was Constantin Puiul of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies him as a resident of house no. 532, and names his parents as "Constantin a lui Machsim Ciopei" and "Iuliana nascuta Strugari."

15M. EUFROSINA CIOPEI, daughter of Macsim and Iuliana Ciopei, born 16 Jan. 1884 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at her birth was Todosia Olariu of Tereblecea. Eufrosina was baptised 21 Jan. 1884 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godfather was Constantin Puiul of Tereblecea. The baptismal record says she was born at house no. 532, and identifies her parents as "Maxim Copei" and "Iuliana nascuta Strugariu." On 9 March 1901, Eufrosina served as godmother at the baptism of her nephew Ion Ciopei, who died the next day. On 22 Jan. 1906 in Tereblecea, Eufrosina, age 22, married a bachelor named GEORGIE BILETCHI, age 22, born 16 April 1884, a resident of house no. 18 in Opriseni, son of the late Stefan Biletchi of Opriseni. The priest at the wedding was Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and the witnesses were Michail son of Georgie Pitul and his spouse Maria, peasant farmers of Opriseni. The marriage record identifies the bride as "Eufrosina fiica lui Macsim Ciopei din Tereblecea."

16M. NATALIA CIOPEI, daughter of Macsim and Iuliana Ciopei, born 26 July 1886 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at Natalia's birth was Todosia Olariu of Tereblecea. Natalia, born at house no. 532, was baptised 2 Aug. 1886 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godfather was Constantin Puiul of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies her parents as "Macsim a lui Michail Ciopei" and "Iuliana nascuta Strugariu." On 2 Oct. 1911 in Tereblecea, Natalia, age 25 years 2 months, married a bachelor named GRIGORIE HUMENIUC, age 28 years 8 months, born 16 Jan. 1883, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea residing at house no. 26, son of the late Vasilie Humeniuc and Zamfira Sandul. At the time of her wedding, Natalia was residing at house no. 532/II. The priest at the wedding was Father Ioan Tipa, and the witnesses were Sofronie Cojocariu and his wife Ecaterina of Tereblecea. Natalia's marriage record identifies her as the daughter of the late "Maxim a lui Mihail Ciopeiu" and "Iuliana nascuta Strugariu."

        82M. PANTELEIMON HUMENIUC, born 31 May 1912

17M. IOAN CIOPEI, son of Macsim and Iuliana Ciopei, born 17 Sept. 1888 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at his birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. Ioan, born at house no. 532, was baptised 24 Sept. 1888 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godfather was Constantin Puiul, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. 18M. SIMEON CIOPEI, son of Macsim and Iuliana Ciopei, born 12 April 1891 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died 14 April 1891 in Tereblecea; buried 15 April 1891 in Tereblecea. The midwife at Simeon's birth was Todosia Olariu of Tereblecea. He was baptised 13 April 1891 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godfather was Andrei Strugariu, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies Simeon's parents as "Macsim a lui Michail Ciopei" and "Iuliana nascuta Strugariu," residents of house no. 532. Simeon died when he was just two days old, with the cause listed as "slab din nascere" (born frail). The priest at his funeral was Father Ilarion Dracinschi.

19M. GRIGORIE CIOPEI, son of Simion and Iustina Ciopei, born circa 1879 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died at age 12 on 9 June 1891 in Tereblecea. Grigorie's death record identifies him as "Grigorie a lui Simeon Ciopei din Tereblecea," a resident of house no. 524. The cause of death is shown as "au cazul de precopocisi sau stalcit" (?). Grigorie was buried 11 June 1891, with Father Ilarion Dracinschi conducting the funeral.

20M. GEORGIE CIOPEI, twin son of Simion and Iustina Ciopei, born 21 April 1881 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Georgie and his twin brother Ioan were born at house no. 330. The midwife for Georgie was Pelaghiea Bodor of Tereblecea. Georgie was baptised on the day of his birth by Father Dimitrie Seleschi, and his godmother was Eleana, daughter of Grigori Scripcari, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Georgie's baptismal record identifies his parents as "Simion Copei" and "Iustina nascuta Iepure."

21M. IOAN CIOPEI, twin son of Simion and Iustina Ciopei, born 21 April 1881 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Ioan and his twin brother Georgie were born at house no. 330. The midwife for Ioan was Pelaghiea Rus of Tereblecea. Georgie was baptised on the day of his birth by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmother was Iuliana, wife of MACSIM CIOPEI (See No. 2M above), peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Ioan's baptismal record identifies his parents as "Simion Copei" and "Iustina nascuta Iepure."

22M. TEOFILACT CIOPEI (Teofil), son of Simion and Iustina Ciopei, born 4 Jan. 1883 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Teofilact was born at house no. 524, and the midwife at his birth was Todosia Olari of Tereblecea. Teofilact was baptised 8 Jan. 1883 by Father Dimitrie Seleschi, and his godfather was Grigori Scripcari, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Teofilact's baptismal record identifies his parents as "Simion Copei" and "Iustina nascuta Iepure," while his marriage record names him "Teofilact fiul lui Simeon a lui Michai Ciopei." On 30 Oct. 1905 in Stircea (Starcea), Teofilact, age 22, a resident of house no. 524 in Tereblecea, married DOMNICA BEJAN, age 18, born 17 Jan. 1887, a peasant farmer of house no. 27 in Stircea, daughter of Artemie and Paraschiva (Milnitchi) Bejan. Artemie was son of Georgi Bejan. The priest at the wedding was Father Stefan Seleschi, but no witnesses are shown in the marriage record, apparently because the marriage took place in Stircea rather than Tereblecea. On 31 Jan. 1919, Teofilact was a witness at the marriage of TATIANA PASCARIU and Serghie Stratulat. Tatiana was the daughter of Ioan Pascar, younger brother of my great-grandfather Leon Pascar whose wife was Iftima Ciopei -- thus, Tatiana's marriage record would be further evidence of the connection between my Ciopei ancestors and the Michail Ciopei family. According to Teofilact's descendants, he and Domnica had 11 children, most of whom died young -- in fact they had a total of 12 children. Some of their sons reportedly emigrated to Manitoba, Canada, in the 1920s (though they must have been only children at the time). Ten of Teofilact's children have been found in the parish records of Tereblecea, one of them, Teodor, also being attested by his descendants. Three others, Stefan, Eugene, and Raveca, are also attested by Teofilact's descendants.

        88M. TEOFIL CIOPEI, born 27 Sept. 1913
        89M. TATIANA CIOPEI, born 11 Jan. 1915
        90M. DIMITRIE CIOPEI, born 9 Nov. 1916

        93M. TEODOR CIOPEI, born 4 March 1921
        94M. EUGENE CIOPEI, born 1930

23M. MARIA CIOPEI, daughter of Simion and Iustina Ciopei, born 5 June 1885 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Maria was born at house no. 524, and the midwife at her birth was Todosia Olariu of Tereblecea. She was baptised 8 June 1885 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godparents were Grigorie Scripcariu and Elisaveta, wife of Ioan Cazac, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies Eleana's parents as "Simion a lui Michail Ciopei" and "Iustina nascuta Iepure."

24M. DIMITRIE CIOPEI, son of Simion and Iustina Ciopei, born 30 Oct. 1886 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Dimitrie was born at house no. 524, and the midwife at his birth was Pelaghia Rus of Tereblecea. He was baptised 1 Nov. 1886 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmother was Elisaveta, wife of Ion Cozac, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies Dimitrie's parents as "Simion a lui Michail Ciopei" and "Iustina nascuta Iepure."

25M. MATRONA OLOER, daughter of Casian and Anastasia Oloier, born circa 1873 or 1876 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died 23 Dec. 1905 in Tereblecea. We do not yet have Matrona's baptismal record, so her date of birth is uncertain. Her marriage record indicates that she was born in 1876, but her death record indicates a date of birth in 1873. On 1 Feb. 1896 in Tereblecea, Matrona, said to be 20 years old, a peasant farmer living at house no. 163, married a bachelor named DANIIL TODERIUC, age 30, born 10 Dec. 1865, a peasant farmer residing at house no. 243, son of Iacob and Anna Toderiuc. The priest who performed the wedding was Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and the witnesses were Ion Cojocar and his wife Elisaveta, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Members of the Ion Cojocar family also served as godparents for the children of Matrona and Daniil. The marriage record identifies Matrona as "Matrona fiica lui Casian Oloer," and identifies Daniil as "Daniil fiul lui Ion Toderiuc" (showing Daniil's grandfather Ion instead of his father Iacob). Matrona and Daniil, who lived at house no. 243 in Tereblecea, had three sons and two daughters. Matrona's death record indicates some kind of inflammation ("aprinderea") as the cause of death. The record identifies her as "Matrona sotia lui Daniil Toderiuc din Tereblecea," and says she was 32 years old. She was buried in Tereblecea on 24 Dec. 1905, and Father Stefan Seleschi was the priest at her funeral. On 22 Feb. 1907 in Tereblecea, Daniil, then a 41-year-old widower and still living at house no. 243, married a maiden named MARINA ACSENIUC, age 19, born 19 July 1887, a peasant farmer of house no. 700, daughter of Ambrosie and Tecla Acseniuc. The priest at the wedding was Father Stefan Seleschi, and the witnesses were Nicolai Cojocar (son of Ion Cojocar) and his wife Tecla, peasant farmers of Tereblecea.

        -- VASILE TODERIUC, born 31 Jan. 1898
        -- MARIA TODERIUC, born 17 May 1900
        -- ANA TODERIUC, born 17 Sept. 1903
        -- DIMITRIE TODERIUC, born 14 Oct. 1905

26M. IOAN OLOER, son of Casian and Anastasia Oloier, born 26 Jan. 1879 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. On 22 Feb. 1907 in Tereblecea, Ioan, age 28, a peasant farmer residing at house no. 163, married a maiden named PARASCHEVA EPURE, age 22, born 5 Oct. 1885, a peasant farmer living at house no. 630, daughter of Filip and Veronica Epure. The priest at the wedding was Father Stefan Seleschi, and the witnesses were Adrian Tigira and his wife Eudochia, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. The marriage record identifies Ioan as "Ioan, fiul lui Cassian alui Onufrei Oloer si al sotiei sale Nastasia nascuta Ciopei, tarani din Tereblecea," while his wife Parascheva is identified as "Parascheva, fiica lui Filip alui Nichita Epure si a sotiei sale Veronica nascuta Nimigean, tarani din Tereblecea."

        95M. EUFROSINA OLOERIU, born 11 Aug. 1911
        96M. VASILIE OLOERIU, born 4 Feb. 1914

27M. DOMNICA OLOIER, daughter of Casian and Anastasia Oloier, born 22 April 1882 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Domnicia was born at house no. 163, and the midwife at her birth was Todosia Olari of Tereblecea. She was baptised 24 April 1882 by Father Dimitrie Seleschi, and her godmothers were Ierina Mintioan and Iulita Belciug, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies Domnica's parents as "Casian Oloier" and "Noestasia nascuta Ciopei."

28M. PAVEL OLOERI, son of Casian and Anastasia Oloier, born 26 Jan. 1884 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Pavel was born at house no. 163, and the midwife at his birth was Todosia Olariu of Tereblecea. He was baptised 28 Jan. 1884 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmother was Iulita Belciug, daughter of Necolai Belciug, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies Pavel's parents as "Casian Oloier" and "Anastasia nascuta Copei." On 14 Feb. 1910 in Tereblecea, Pavel, age 26, a peasant farmer residing at house no. 163, married a maiden named LEONTINA TCACI, age 25 years 5 months, born 22 Sept. 1884, a peasant farmer living at house no. 359, daughter of Gerasim and Agripina (Socaci) Tcaci. The priest at the wedding was Father Dimitrie Georgescu, and the witnesses were Pavel Socaci and his wife Ecaterina, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. The marriage record identifies Pavel's parents as "Casian Oloier" and "Anastasia nascuta Ciopeiu." Pavel is apparently the "Pavel Casian," peasant farmer of Starcea, who with his wife Leontina witnessed the marriage on 3 Nov. 1913 of Natalia Oloier (See No. 38M below).

Leontina was dead by the fall of 1919, when Pavel, then a widower, married a second time. On 30 Oct. 1919 in Tereblecea, Pavel, age 35 years 9 months, a peasant farmer then living at house no. 395 (but cf. the residence of Pavel's first wife), married a maiden named ZENOVIA CRETUL, age 26 years 8 months, born 8 Feb. 1893, a peasant farmer residing at house no. 440, daughter of Ioan and Elisaveta (Tcaciu) Cretul. The priest at the wedding was Father Ioan Tipa, and the witnesses were Dimitrie Cretul and his wife Natalia, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. This marriage required a dispensation (granted prior to the nuptials in Oct. 1919) for an impediment due to a cousin relationship within the second and third degrees of kinship. The marriage record identifies Pavel's parents as "Cassian Oloeri" and "Anastasia nascuta Ciopeiu."

        97M. VASILIE OLOIER, born 1 Aug. 1914

29M. NICOLAI OLOIERI, son of Casian and Anastasia Oloier, born 6 May 1886 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Nicolai was born at house no. 163, and the midwife at his birth was Todosia Olariu of Tereblecea. He was baptised 17 May 1886 by Father Teleaga Gavril, and his godmother was Iulita Belciuc, daughter of Nicolai Belciuc, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies Nicolai's parents as "Casian a lui Onufrei Oloieri" and "Nastasia nascuta Ciopei."

30M. NATALIA OLOIER, daughter of Casian and Anastasia Oloier, born 27 Feb. 1892 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Natalia was born at house no. 163, and the midwife at her birth was Todosia Olariu of Tereblecea. She was baptised 29 Feb. 1892 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godmother was Natalia Belciug, daughter of Nicolai Belciug, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies Natalia's parents as "Casian Oloieri" and "Nastasia nascuta Ciopei." On 3 Nov. 1913 in Tereblecea, Natalia, aged 20 years 8 months, a laborer living at house no. 160, married a bachelor named ALEXIE DANILIUC, age 28 years 8 months, a laborer residing at house no. 129 in Starcea, son of the late Ioan Daniliuc and his wife Anastasia Dubau. The priest at the wedding was Father Ioan Tipa, and the witnesses were Pavel Casian and his wife Leontina, peasant farmers of Starcea. "Pavel Casian" probably is none other than "Pavel son of Casian Oloier," Natalia's older brother who apparently had moved to Starcea. The marriage record identifies Natalia's parents as "Casian Oloier" and "Nastasia nascuta Ciopei."

31M. ALECSIE CIOPEI (or "Alecsa"), son of Grigorie and Elisaveta Ciopei, born 17 March 1881 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Alecsie was born at house no. 330 in Tereblecea, and the midwife at his birth was Pelaghiea Rus of Tereblecea. Alecsie was baptised 20 March 1881 by Father Dimitrie Seleschi, and his godmother was Domnica, wife of Nicolai Nemigean, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. On 24 Feb. 1905 in Tereblecea, Alecsie, age 24, a bachelor residing at house no. 668, married a maiden named LEONTINA ZEGREA, age 18, born 18 Sept. 1886, a peasant farmer resident at house no. 429, daughter of Simeon Zegrea. The priest at their marriage was Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and the witnesses were EMANUIL CIOPEI (See No. 6 above) and his wife Agripina, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Emanuil's daughter Domnica (No. 22 above) also was a godmother to Alecsie's eldest daughter. These facts indicate that they apparently belonged to the same Ciopei family.

        98M. ECATERINA CIOPEI, born 5 Nov. 1907
        99M. GEORGIE CIOPEI, born 15 March 1911

32M. MICHAIL CIOPEI, son of Grigorie and Elisaveta Ciopei, born 7 April 1883 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Michail was born at house no. 330, and the midwife at his birth was Pelagia Rus of Tereblecea. He was baptised on the day of his birth by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmother was Domnica, wife of Nicolai Nemigean, peasant farmer of Tereblecea.

33M. GEORGIE CIOPEI, son of Grigorie and Elisaveta Ciopei, born 19 April 1885 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died circa 1918. Georgie was born at house no. 330, and the midwife at his birth was Pelagia Rus of Tereblecea. He was baptised 27 April 1885 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmother was Domnica, wife of Nicolai Nemigean, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies Georgie's parents as "Grigori a lui Michail Copei" and "Elisaveta nascuta Cupcic." On 30 May 1910 in Tereblecea, Georgie, age 25 years 1 month, then a bachelor living at house no. 668, married ECATERINA GABOR, a resident of house no. 609/II in Tereblecea, age 30 years 8 months, born 23 Sept. 1879, widow of Ioan Cretul, son of Onofreiu Cretul. The priest at the wedding was Father Gheorghe Ciuperca, and the witnesses were Cosma Gireada and his wife Ana, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. The marriage record identifies Georgie's father as "Grigorie a lui Mihail Ciopeiu." Georgie's wife Ecaterina served as a godmother at a baptism on 26 July 1917 in Tereblecea, when she was identified as "Ecaterina, wife of Georgie Ciopeiu, peasant farmer of Tereblecea." Ecaterina again served as a godmother at a baptism in Tereblecea on 12 Oct. 1919, but at that time she was identifed as "Ecaterina, widow of Georgie Ciopeiu," which means Georgie had died in the intervening time, at some point from the latter half of 1917 through the autumn of 1919. Was he perhaps killed in World War I?

34M. LEONTINA CIOPEI, daughter of Grigorie and Elisaveta Ciopei, born perhaps circa 1887, probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Leontina's date of birth as well as the order of her birth is unknown, but she may have been born between her brothers Georgie and Ioan, as there is enough time between their births for Grigorie and Elisaveta Ciopei to have had another child, say, in 1887 or 1888. On 15 April 1914, Leontina had an illegitimate daughter named ECATERINA. In Ecaterina's baptismal record, Leontina is called "Leontina fiica lui Grigorie Ciopeiu si a sotiei sale Elisaveta nascuta Cupcic, lucratoare din Tereblecea."

       100M. ECATERINA CIOPEI, born 15 April 1914

34M. IOAN CIOPEI, son of Grigorie and Elisaveta Ciopei, born 16 Sept. 1890 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died 27 Aug. 1892 in Tereblecea. Ioan was born at house no. 330, and the midwife at his birth was Pelagia Rus of Tereblecea. He was baptised 22 Sept. 1890 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmother was Domnica, wife of Nicolaiu Nemigean, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies Ioan's parents as "Grigori a lui Michail Copei" and "Elisaveta nascuta Cupcic." Ioan died a few weeks before his second birthday at house no. 668, with the cause of death given as "de tusa" (cough). He was buried in Tereblecea on 29 Aug. 1892, with the funeral conducted by Father Ilarion Dracinschi. His death record identifies him as "Ioan a lui Grigori Ciopei."

35M. DOMNICA CIOPEI, daughter of Grigorie and Elisaveta Ciopei, born 2 Feb. 1893 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Domnica was born at house no. 668, and the midwife at her birth was Todosia Olariu of Tereblecea. She was baptised 6 Feb. 1893 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godmother was Domnica, wife of Nicolai Nemigean, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies Domnica's parents as "Grigori a lui Michail Copei" and "Elisaveta nascuta Cupcic," but Domnica's marriage record calls her father "Grigorie Ciopeiu" and says he had died at some point prior to her marriage. When Domnica was yet unmarried, she had two illegitimate children, a daughter in 1915 and a son in 1917. The Georgi Ciopei Family of Tereblecea

A Ciopei family resided at house no. 18 in Tereblecea during the 1880s. House no. 18 was perhaps not far from house no. 6, where my own Ciopei ancestors lived. The ancestor of the Ciopeis of house no. 18 was a certain GEORGI CIOPEI, who may perhaps have been born circa 1825. He may have been a brother or son or cousin of the Michail Ciopei who was patriarch of most of the Ciopeis of Tereblecea. Very little about Georgi Ciopei and his descendants is known at this time, but four generations of this family have been traced in the Tereblecea parish records. What has been found so far is presented here:

First Generation

1G. GEORGI CIOPEI, almost certainly a peasant farmer, born perhaps around 1825. Georgi probably lived at house no. 18, which at any rate was certainly the residence of his children and grandchildren from the 1880s onward. Presumably Georgi was born and lived in Tereblecea, though it is possible he was not originally from Tereblecea. Georgi's wife was named ERINA TCACI. Three children of Georgi Ciopei have been identified in the Tereblecea parish records:

2G. NICOLAI CIOPEI, born circa 1856
3G. ISIDOR CIOPEI, born circa 1859
4G. ELISAVETA CIOPEI, born circa 1863

Second Generation

2G. NICOLAI CIOPEI, son of Georgi and Erina Ciopei, born circa 1856 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died perhaps circa 1891-2 in Tereblecea. On 29 Jan. 1884 in Tereblecea, Nicolai, age 27, a bachelor living at house no. 18, married a maiden named DOMNICA DUBAU, age 24, a peasant farmer living at house no. 506 in Tereblecea, daughter of Alecsander and Elisaveta (Gabor) Dubau. The priest at the wedding was Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and the witnesses were Teodor Cojocariu and his wife Pelagia, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. At the time of his marriage, Nicolai was a soldier in the Austrian army, but he later was a peasant farmer dwelling at house no. 18 in Tereblecea. The marriage record identifies the bridegroom and the bride as "Nicolai fiul lui Georgi Ciopei si a sotiei sale Erina nascuta Tcaci, Ostasi 41. Inf. Reg. 4 Bat 13 Comp din Tereblecea" and "Domnica fiica lui Alecsander Dubai si a sotiei sale Elisaveta nascuta Gabor, taran din Tereblecea." Only four children of Nicolai Ciopei appear in the Orthodox Church parish registers of Tereblecea. The fact that no further children of Nicolai are recorded in Tereblecea after 1890 suggests that Nicolai may have died circa 1891-2. Whatever the case, his daughter Leontina was still living at house no. 18 at the time of her marriage in 1904.

        5G. (SON) CIOPEI, born 12 June 1884
        6G. LEONTINA CIOPEI, born 14 Nov. 1885
        7G. (DAU.) CIOPEI, born 4 Dec. 1889
        8G. NATALIA CIOPEI, born 2 Nov. 1890

3G. ISIDOR CIOPEI, son of Georgi Ciopei, born circa 1859 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. On 29 Jan. 1889 in Tereblecea, Isidor, age 29, a bachelor living at house no. 18, married a maiden named MATRONA COSIC, age 26, a peasant farmer living at house no. 29 in Tereblecea, daughter of Stefan Cosic. The priest at the wedding was Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and the witnesses were Lazar Rus and his wife Iftima, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. At the time of his marriage, Nicolai was a peasant farmer. The marriage record identifies the bridegroom and the bride as "Isidor fiul lui Georgi Ciopei, taran din Tereblecea" and "Matrona fiica lui Stefan Cosic, taran din Tereblecea." On 27 Oct. 1890, Matrona and Domnica, wife of Nicolai Nemigean, peasant farmers of Tereblecea, served as godmothers at the baptism of Dimitrie Cosic, son of Filip Cosic and Iulita Cigan, obviously relatives of Matrona. Again, on 27 June 1898, Isidor's wife Matrona served as one of the godparents at the baptism of Leontina Ticae, daughter of Ion Ticae and Todosia Rus. Todosia was likely related to Lazar Rus who witnessed Matrona's marriage. It is perhaps significant that Domnica, wife of Nicolai Nemigean, joined with Matrona, wife of Isidor Ciopei, at the baptism of Dimitrie Cosic. Domnica was a godmother at many baptisms of the Michail Ciopei family. That suggests Isidor belonged to that family or was at the least closely related to the Michail Ciopei family. Perhaps Isidor's father Georgi was a son or brother of Michail.

4G. ELISAVETA CIOPEI, daughter of Georgi Ciopei, born circa 1863 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. On 24 Jan. 1888 in Tereblecea, Elisaveta, age 24, a maiden living at house no. 18, married a bachelor named IACHIM BULAI, age 30, a peasant farmer living at house no. 85 in Tereblecea, son of Andrei Bulai. The priest at the wedding was Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and the witnesses were Ion Bulbuc and his wife Acsenia, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. At the time of her marriage, Elisaveta was a peasant farmer. The marriage record identifies the bride and groom as "Elisaveta fiica lui Georgi Ciopei, taran din Tereblecea" and "Iachim fiul lui Andrei Bulai, taran din Tereblecea."

Third Generation

5G. (SON) CIOPEI, stillborn son of Nicolai and Domnica Ciopei, born 12 June 1884 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The Tereblecea baptismal register says that the birth of this unnamed stillborn son was recorded by Father Dimitrie Seleschi, though there could be no baptism since this baby boy was born dead. The midwife at the birth was Todosia Olariu of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies the parents as "Necolai Copei" and "Domnica nascuta Dubau," residents of house no. 18. The fact that this child was born less than six months after his parents' marriage suggests that he was born premature.

6G. LEONTINA CIOPEI, daughter of Nicolai and Domnica Ciopei, born 14 Nov. 1885 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Leontina was born at house no. 18, and the midwife at her birth was Todosia Olariu of Tereblecea. She was baptised 16 Nov. 1885 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godfather was Teodor Cojocariu, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies Leontina's parents as "Nicolai a lui Georgi Ciopei" and "Domnica nascuta Dubeu." On 29 Jan. 1904 in Tereblecea, Leontina, age 18, a peasant farmer residing at house no. 18, married a bachelor named PETREA BEIUSCO, age 26, born 10 July 1877, a resident of house no. 300 in Opriseni, son of Simion Beiusco. The priest at the wedding was Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and the witnesses were Petru Mihailiuc and his wife Parascheva, peasant farmers of Dinica. The marriage record identifies the bride and groom as "Leontina fiica lui Nicolaiu Ciopeiu" and "Petrea fiul lui Simion Beiusco." Simion Beiusco and his wife Eudochiea, peasant farmers of Opriseni, witnessed the marriage of TATIANA CIOPEI (No. 2 above), son of Ioan Ciopei. That suggests that the Georgi Ciopei family was related to the Ioan Ciopei family.

        9G. MARIA BEIUSCA, born 15 Nov. 1904

7G. (DAU.) CIOPEI, stillborn daughter of Nicolai and Domnica Ciopei, born 4 Dec. 1889 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The Tereblecea baptismal register says that the birth of this unnamed stillborn daughter was recorded by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, though there could be no baptism since this baby girl was born dead. The midwife at the birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies the parents as "Nicolai Ciopei" and "Domnica nascuta Dubau," residents of house no. 18.

8G. NATALIA CIOPEI, daughter of Nicolai and Domnica Ciopei, born 2 Nov. 1890 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Natalia was born at house no. 18, and the midwife at her birth was Todosia Olariu of Tereblecea. She was baptised 3 Nov. 1890 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godfather was Teodor Cojocariu, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies Natalia's parents as "Nicolai a lui Georgi Ciopei" and "Domnica nascuta Dubau."

Fourth Generation

9G. MARIA BEIUSCA, daughter of Petrea and Leontina Beiusco, born 15 Nov. 1904 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Maria was born at house no. 18, and the midwife at her birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. She was baptised 20 Nov. 1904 by Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and her godfather was Cosma Olariu of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies Maria's parents as "Petrea Beiusca" and "Leontina nascuta Ciopeiu."

The Domnica Ciopei-Sandul Family of Tereblecea

The Tereblecea parish records show a certain DOMNICA CIOPEI as the wife of Miron Sandul. Domnica's parentage is not yet known, but because her son lived at house no. 8 in Tereblecea, which apparently was close to house no. 6, the residence of my Ciopei family, it is possible that Domnica was closely related to Ioan Ciopei of house no. 6, my great-great-grandfather. In fact, she could well be the same as Ioan Ciopei's daughter Domnica (No. 7 above). It appears that Domnica is the midwife "Domnica Sandul" who appears in so many Tereblecea baptismal records, including a large number of the Ciopei births listed above. Three generations of Domnica's family have been traced in the Tereblecea parish records. What has been found so far is presented here:

First Generation

1D. DOMNICA CIOPEI, a peasant woman of Tereblecea, born perhaps circa 1875, married MIRON SANDUL, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Miron and Domnica had a son:

2D. MELETIE SANDUL, born perhaps circa 1894

Second Generation

2D. MELETIE SANDUL, a peasant farner of Tereblecea, born perhaps circa 1894, married ELISAVETA CRETUL, a peasant woman of Tereblecea, daughter of Stefan and Eleana (Gavriluta) Cretul. Meletie and Elisaveta resided at house no. 8 in Tereblecea. They had a daughter:

        3D. LEONTINA SANDUL, born 13 Feb. 1914

Third Generation

3D. LEONTINA SANDUL, daughter of Meletie and Elisaveta Sandul, born 13 Feb. 1914 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Leontina was born at house no. 8, and the midwife at her birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea, apparently her own paternal grandmother. Leontina was baptised 15 Feb. 1914 by Father Dimitrie Georgescu, and her godmother was Agripina, wife of Vasilie Jupanu, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies Leontinua's parents as "Meletie Sandul, fiul lui Miron Sandul si al sotiei sale Domnica nascuta Ciopeiu, agricultor did Tereblecea" and "Elisaveta fiica lui Stefan Cretul si a sotiei sale Eleana nascuta Gavriluta din Tereblecea."
