NOTE: I am searching for anyone who might be descended from or related to my Olar, Paskar, Toderiuc, and Ciopei ancestors. In February 2008, I had the joy of making contact with the descendants of my grandfather's older brother Mihai Olar. If you are a relative, or think you might be, I encourage you to please contact me by clicking here. See also our Family Search pages with family photographs hosted by Maritza Hreniuc in French, English, and Romanian. Thanks!

In researching my father's genealogy, I have received invaluable assistance from my parents and aunts and uncles and cousins. I must give special mention to my cousin Greg Budovec, for whose generosity in sharing old family photos and mementos I am very grateful. I have also greatly benefited from the kindness of my distant cousins Mariana Zotic and Vitalii Eremeiko, descendants of my grandfather's older brother Michael.

Among the greatest helps to our genealogical research are the vital records of my grandparents' home village of Tereblecea, which the Mormon Church has microfilmed and catalogued among the records of Tereblecea Noua (Porubne or Deutsche-Tereblestie). Last but not least, I also have benefited from the help of The Bukovina Society of the Americas. Their website is a storehouse of very helpful information, and I have relied on some of the Society's articles to help write this account of Olar genealogies.

AS I MENTION elsewhere on this website, we have been able to trace our Olar genealogy back to the village of Tereblecea in Bucovina during the early 1800s. In light of what is known about the history of the Romanian people in general and the history of the Romanians of Moldavia in particular, it is extremely unlikely that we will ever be able to extend our knowledge of our Olar ancestry much earlier than that. However, we are confident that we will be able to learn more about our Olar cousins that we are sure we have. The history of our Olar family is presented at the Nine Generations of Olars webpages here at this website. However, the Orthodox parish records of Tereblecea include the names of members of several other Olar families whose relationship to my Olars -- if any -- has not yet been determined. In some cases, there is a good chance that these other Olar families of Tereblecea -- a total of 17 families identified in the old parish records so far -- are cousin branches of our own Olar family, but in other cases it could be that they are unrelated families who just happen to share our surname. An account of these other Tereblecea Olars is presented below, beginning with a review of the earliest known Olars of Tereblecea. Following the 17 Olar families is an account of Olar victims of Communist tyranny during the World War II era, after which 27 Olar families who live in contemporary Tereblecea will be listed.

Historical records show that Romanian Olars have lived in Tereblecea since at least circa 1775, when Bucovina became a part of the Austrian Empire. Soon after Austria annexed Bucovina, the Habsburg Empress Maria Theresa had her officials survey the land and take censuses of the people of living there, to help her administrators to obtain an understanding of the newly-acquired territory. Included in those census records are lists of people who had been subjects of the Austrian Empire prior to 1775, but had moved to Bucovina and were found to be living there after the time that Austria acquired Bucovina. For the village of Tereblecea (then part of the landed possessions of the Orthodox Monastery of Putna), a list was compiled on 27 Jan. 1778 showing 73 ethnic Romanians who had formerly lived in Transylvania, in the Habsburg Kingdom of Hungary (See Lumea Carpatica, vol. 1, fasc. 1, pp.53-54). The 66th entry on this list is PETRU OLARIU, who is described as a "plugar din Vica" -- "ploughman of Vica," apparently the Transylvanian town of Vica, today located in Hunedoara County toward the western edge of Romania, which is a considerable distance from Bucovina). When living in Vica, Petru had been a "iobag" or serf. He settled in Tereblecea in 1775, and at the time of the Austrian census his household consisted of one male and two females (most likely himself, his wife, and a daughter).

At this time it is impossible to tell whether or not Petru Olariu was our ancestor, but it is quite possible that he was the grandfather of our earliest proven ancestor, ANDREI OLAR, who was born circa 1803 and resided at house no. 153 in Tereblecea. On the other hand, it is possible that there were Romanian Olars living in Tereblecea before 1775 -- our ancestry may instead trace back to an Olar family already residing in Tereblecea before Petru's arrival. In any event, Petru Olariu is the earliest known Olar of Tereblecea that we know of at this time. As far as we know at this time, the second earliest known Olar of Tereblecea was STEFAN OLAR, who was born in the latter half of the 1700s. In fact, we do not know if Stefan ever lived in Tereblecea. However, Stefan's son IOACHIM OLAR (shown in some of the earliest Cyrillic script parish records of Tereblecea as "Iakem fiul lui Stefan Olar" and "Ioakem"), is known to have been living at house no. 153 in Tereblecea in 1845 and 1847. Since Ioachim was 37 years old in May 1847, he was born circa 1810, which means he was just seven years younger than our ancestor (Ioachim's kinsman) Andrei Olar. We do not know the name of Andrei's father, but it is quite possible that Andrei was an older son of Stefan -- or perhaps Andrei was a nephew of Stefan.

The Austrian census lists that mention Petru Olariu of Tereblecea also mention other Romanian Olars who moved from Transylvania to Bucovina during those years. For example, in 1773 a peasant named GAVRIL OLARIU, a ploughman from Blajeni, settled in the village of Stupca (today called Ciprian Porumbescu) in southern Bucovina, between Suceava and Gura Humorului. Blajeni, where Gavril lived in Transylvania before settling in Stupca, was located in Hunedoara County, in the general vicinity of Vica, where Petru Olariu lived. While living in Blajeni, Gavril had been a "supus" (subject). At the time Gavril was registered with the Austrian census on 27 Jan. 1778, his household in Stupca consisted of three males and three females (most likely himself and his wife, with two sons and two daughters).

Another Romanian Olar found in these lists was a peasant named DANIIL OLAR, a ploughman of Nimigea, who moved from Transylvania to Todiresti in 1760. While living in Nimigea, Daniil had been a "liber" or free peasant. At the time Daniil was registered on 27 Jan. 1778, his household in Todiresti had a similar makeup to Gavril Olariu's -- three males and three females (most likely himself and his wife, with two sons and two daughters). Of course at this time there is no way to tell if Gavril or Daniil were related to our Olars.

Since the origin of the various Olar families of Tereblecea has not yet been determined, we will proceed with an account of the Tereblecea Olars whose relationship to my family is uncertain or unknown.

I. The Constantin Olar family

Residing at house no. 541 in Tereblecea during the 1800s and early 1900s was an Olar family whose patriarch was named Constantin (1838-1901). My great-grandfather Ioan Olar (born circa 1836) had a younger brother named Teodor (born 1839) who lived at house no. 547, which appears to have been located near house no. 541. In addition, Atanasie Olar, who belonged to our known cousins who lived at house no. 285, is known to have later lived in house no. 542, next door to the Constantin Olar. Consequently, it is quite probable that the Constantin Olar family was related to my Olar family. Constantin could have been a brother or cousin of my great-grandfather Andrei Olar.

First Generation

1C. CONSTANTIN OLAR, born circa 1838 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died at age 63 on 9 Oct. 1901 in Tereblecea; buried 11 Oct. 1901 in Tereblecea. Constantin was a peasant farmer who resided at house no. 541. His death record says he lived at house no. "451," but that evidently is a clerical error, because almost every other record pertaining to his family shows the house no. as 541, not 451. The death record indicates some kind of stomach ailment as the cause of death. Father Ilarion Dracinschi was the priest at Constantin's funeral and burial. Two sons of Constantin have been identified in the Orthodox Church parish records of Tereblecea.

          2C. STEFAN OLAR, born 21 Dec. 1870
          3C. GAVRIL OLAR

Second Generation

2C. STEFAN OLAR, son of Constantin Olar, born 21 Dec. 1870 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Stefan was a peasant farmer who resided at house no. 541 in Tereblecea. On 6 Feb. 1900, at the age 29, Stefan married in Tereblecea to a maiden named AGRIPINA PAULIUC, age 24, born 23 June 1876 probably in Tereblecea, a peasant farmer residing at house no. 346, daughter of Grigori Pauliuc of Tereblecea. The priest at their nuptials was Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and the witnesses were Dimitrie Slemco and his wife AGAFIA OLAR (see below), peasant farmers of Tereblecea.

          4C. DIMITRIE OLAR, born 8 Sept. 1901
          5C. CONSTANTIN OLAR, born 6 March 1904

3C. GAVRIL OLAR, son of Constantin Olar, born probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Gavril was a peasant farmer who resided at house no. 541 in Tereblecea, later moving to house no. 126. Gavril married TODOSIA AURITE (or "Teodosia") and had several children. While living at house no. 498 in 1907, Todosia had a daughter by someone other than her husband.

          6C. ANA OLAR, born 2 July 1900
          7C. VASILIE OLAR, born 21 July 1902
          8C. ION OLAR, born 12 July 1903
          9C. LEONTINA OLAR, born 4 Feb. 1907
         10C. ECATERINA OLAR, born 2 Nov. 1908

Third Generation

4C. DIMITRIE OLAR, son of Stefan and Agripina Olar, born 8 Sept. 1901 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Dimitrie was born at house no. 541, and the midwife at his birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. He was baptised 9 Sept. 1901 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godfather was Dimitrie Slemco of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies his parents as "Stefan a lui Constantin Olari" and "Agripinia nascuta Pauliuc."

5C. CONSTANTIN OLAR, son of Stefan and Agripina Olar, born 6 March 1904 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died at the age of 18 months on 9 Sept. 1905 in Tereblecea. Constantin was born at house no. 541, and the midwife at his birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. He was baptised 9 March 1904 by Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and his godfather was Dimitrie Slemco of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies his parents as "Stefan Olariu" and "Agripinia nascuta Pauliuc." Constantin's death record names him as "Constantin fiul lui Stefan a lui Constantin Olar din Tereblecea," and lists the cause of death as "de crup difteritie" (diphtherial croup). He was buried 10 Sept. 1905 and the priest at his funeral and burial was Father Stefan Seleschi. The godfather of Stefan's son Constantin is particularly noteworthy because Dimitrie Slemco's wife was AGAFIA OLAR, daughter of Leon Olar of house no. 186 (see below). That suggests that the Constantin Olar and Leon Olar families were related to each other.

6C. ANA OLAR, daughter of Gavril and Todosia Olar, born 2 July 1900 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Ana was born at house no. 126, and the midwife at her birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. She was baptised 9 July 1900 by Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and her godmother was Ana, wife of Vasilie Hritcan, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies her parents as "Gavril a lui Constantin Olari" and "Todosia nascuta Aurite."

7C. VASILIE OLAR, son of Gavril and Todosia Olar, born 21 July 1902 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died at the age of one month on 25 Aug. 1902 in Tereblecea. Vasilie was born at house no. 541, and the midwife at his birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. He was baptised 23 July 1902 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmother was Ana, wife of Vasilie Hritcan of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies his parents as "Gavril alui Constantin Olar" and "Todosia nascuta Aurite." Vasilie's death record names him as "Vasile fiul lui Gavril Olar din Tereblecea," and lists the cause of death as "slab din nascere" (born frail). He was buried 26 Aug. 1902 and the priest at his funeral and burial was Father Vichenti Simganoschi. The death record says Vasilie resided at house no. "641," a clerical error for "541."

8C. ION OLAR, son of Gavril and Todosia Olar, born 12 July 1903 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Ion was born at house no. 126, and the midwife at his birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. He was baptised 13 July 1903 by Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and his godmother was Ana, wife of Vasili Hritcan, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. The baptismal record identifies his parents as "Gavril a lui Constantin Olar" and "Todosia nascuta Aurite."

9C. LEONTINA OLAR, illegitimate daughter of Todosia (Aurite) Olar, born 4 Feb. 1907 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Leontina was born at house no. 498, and the midwife at her birth was Zamfira Bula of Ropcea. She was baptised 11 Feb. 1907 by Father Stefan Seleschi, and her godmothers were Annisia Cobschi and MARIA OLAR, peasant farmers of Ropcea. The baptismal record identifies her mother as "Teodosia, sotiea lui Gavril alui Constantin Olar, taran din Tereblecea."

10C. ECATERINA OLAR, daughter of Gavril and Todosia Olar, born 2 Nov. 1908 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Ecaterina was born at house no. 126, and the midwife at her birth was Teodosia Voluseniuc of "Ruva" (?). She was baptised 13 Nov. 1908 by Father Gheorghe Ciuperca, and her godmothers were Ecaterina, wife of Petru Lupu, "servitor" of Poieni, Veronica, wife of Stefan Holimga, "servitor" of Iordanesti, and Ecaterina lui ANDRII OLARIU, "servitor" of Baenet. The baptismal record identifies her parents as "Gavril alui Constantin Olariu" and "Teodosia nascuta Auritei."

II. The Leon Olar family

Another Olar family of Tereblecea resided at house no. 186, and it may have been related to the Constantin Olar family of house no. 541 as well as to my own Olar family at house no. 153. As mentioned above, the godfather of Stefan Olar's son Constantin was Dimitrie Slemco, husband of Agafia Olar, daughter of Leon Olar of house no. 186. That suggests that the Constantin Olar and Leon Olar families were related to each other. In addition, Leon's son Ignatie Olar married my grandmother's older sister ANA PASCAR. Constantin and Leon may have been brothers or first cousins, and in fact both could have been brothers or first cousins of my great-grandfather Ioan Olar.

First Generation

1L. LEON OLAR, born perhaps circa 1840 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died before 8 Feb. 1898 probably in Tereblecea. Leon married EUDOCHIA BEJUSCO, born circa 1843 probably in Tereblecea, died at age 64 on 22 Nov. 1907 at house no. 186 in Tereblecea. Her death record gives her name her as "Eudochia, vaduva sa Leon Olar din Tereblecea" and identifies the cause of death as "tubercolosa plamaiai" (tuberculosis of the lungs). She was buried 24 Nov. 1907 in Tereblecea, and the priest at the funeral was Father Stefan Seleschi. Leon and Eudochia were peasant farmers residing at house no. 186. Two sons and one daughter of Leon and Eudochia have been identified in the Orthodox Church parish records of Tereblecea.

2L. AGAFIA OLAR, born circa 1868
3L. COSMA OLAR, born circa 1871
          4L. IGNATIE OLAR, born 10 Dec. 1877

Second Generation

2L. AGAFIA OLAR, daughter of Leon and Eudochia Olar, born circa 1868 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. On 2 Feb. 1895 in Tereblecea, Agafia, age 26, a peasant farmer residing at house no. 186, married a bachelor named DIMITRIE SLEMCO, age 25, born circa 1869 probably in Tereblecea, a peasant farmer living at house no. 533, son of Andrei Slemco. The priest at the wedding was Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and the witnesses were Dimitrie Dubeu and his wife Eleana, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. The marriage record identifies the bridegroom and bride as "Dimitrie fiul lui Andrei Slemco" and "Agafia fiica lui Leon Olar." On 27 April 1896, Agafia served as godmother at the baptism of Vasilea Piscealea, illegitimate daughter of Marina Piscealea, whose mother was MARIA TODERIUC. Prior to her marriage, Agafia had an illegitimate daughter who died in infancy. In addition to that daughter, four sons and two daughters of Dimitrie and Agafia have been identified in the Tereblecea parish registers.

          5L. ELISAVETA OLAR, born 10 Nov. 1892
          6L. ION SLEMCO, born 9 April 1896
          7L. COSMA SLEMCO, born 23 Dec. 1897
          8L. LEON SLEMCO, born 30 Oct. 1900
          9L. LEONTINA SLEMCO, born 20 Sept. 1903
         10L. MAFTEIU SLEMCO, born 24 June 1907
         11L. EUDOCHIA SLEMCO, born 25 May 1909

3L. COSMA OLAR (or "Cozma"), son of Leon and Eudochia Olar, born circa 1871 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. On 8 Feb. 1898 in Tereblecea, Cosma, age 26, then a bachelor living at house no. 186, married a maiden named ELEANA TCACI, age 18, born circa 1879, a resident of house no. 167, daughter of Procopie Tcaci, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. The priest at the wedding was Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and the witnesses were Georgi Iliuc and his spouse Elisaveta, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. The marriage record refers to the groom as "Cosma son of the late Leon Olar." It is perhaps significant that the witnesses at the marriage of Cozma and Eleana also served as godparents for some of the daughters my great-grandparents Leon Pascar and Iftima Ciopei -- Cozma's brother Ignatie married Leon and Iftima's daughter Ana.

         12L. EUDOCHIA OLAR, born 2 Nov. 1898
         13L. SERGHIE OLAR, born 22 Aug. 1901
         14L. DUMITRU OLAR, born 8 Oct. 1904
         15L. SERGIE OLAR, born 22 May 1907

4L. IGNATIE OLAR, son of Leon and Eudochia Olar, born 10 Dec. 1877 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. On 21 Feb. 1902 in Tereblecea, Ignatie, age 25, then a bachelor living at house no. 186, married ANA PASCAR, age 20, born 20 Jan. 1882, a resident of house no. 511, daughter of Leon and Iftima Pascar, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. The priest at the wedding was Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and the witnesses were Ambrosie Tcaci and his wife Maria, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. The marriage record refers to the groom as "Ignatie son of the late Leon Olariu." Ignatie's first wife Ana was my grandmother's older sister. Sadly, she died of dysentery on 1 June 1902 at the age of 20, just a couple months after she and Ignatie had married. Afterwards, on 25 Jan. 1904, Ignatie, still residing at house no. 186, remarried in Tereblecea to a maiden named TECLA COJOCARIU, age 23, born 17 Aug. 1880, a peasant farmer residing at house no. 491, daughter of Toader Cojocariu. The priest at the wedding again was Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and the witnesses again were Ambros Tcaci and his wife Maria. The marriage record refers to Ignatie as "Ignati Olariu." On 6 May 1912, Ignatie and his wife Tecla witnessed the marriage of Ilie Zotic and Marfta Cojocariu -- Tecla and Marfta were no doubt related, perhaps sisters.

         16L. MARIA OLAR, born 25 Aug. 1912
         17L. EUDOCHIA OLAR, born 21 Feb. 1915

Third Generation

5L. ELISAVETA OLAR, illegitimate daughter of Agafia Olar, born 10 Nov. 1892 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died when only 16 days old on 26 Nov. 1892 in Tereblecea; funeral and burial on 27 Nov. 1892 in Tereblecea, with Father Ilarion Dracinschi presiding. Elisaveta was born at house no. 186, and the midwife at her birth was Todosia Olariu of Tereblecea. She was baptised 14 Nov. 1892 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godmother was Elisaveta, wife of Ciprian Gabor, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her as "Elisaveta, illegitimate daughter of Agafia fiica lui Leon Olari." Her death record erroneously says Elisaveta was one month old at her death, and also misidentifies her as "Elisaveta fiica lui Agafiei alui Ioan Olariu," that is, Elisaveta, daughter of Agafia, son of Ioan Olariu. That is a double error: "alui" (son of) for "fiica lui" (daughter), and the name "Ioan" for the name "Leon." Elisaveta died at house no. 186. Her cause of death was "slaba din nascere" (weak/sickly at birth).

6L. ION SLEMCO, son of Dimitrie and Agafia Slemco, born 9 April 1896 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Ion was born at house no. 533, and the midwife at his birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. He was baptised by his mother soon after his birth, on 9 April 1896. Father Ilarion Dracinschi recorded the baptism. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Dimitrie Slemco" and "Agafia nascuta Olar." The fact that Ion was baptised by his mother on the day of his birth strongly suggests that he died soon after he was born. Remarkably, just 18 days after Ion's birth, his mother Agafia served as godmother at the 28 April 1896 baptism of Vasilea Piscealea, illegitimate daughter of Marina Piscealea of house no. 464 in Tereblecea.

7L. COSMA SLEMCO, son of Dimitrie and Agafia Slemco, born 23 Dec. 1897 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Cosma was born at house no. 533, and the midwife at his birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. He was baptised 27 Dec. 1897 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godfather was Dimitrie Dubeu, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Dimitrie Slemco" and "Agafia nascuta Olar."

8L. LEON SLEMCO, son of Dimitrie and Agafia Slemco, born 30 Oct. 1900 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Leon was born at house no. 533, and the midwife at his birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. He was baptised 1 Nov. 1900 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmother was Elisaveta spouse of Chiprian Gabor, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Dimitrie Slmco" (i.e., "Slemco") and "Agafia nascuta Olar."

9L. LEONTINA SLEMCO, daughter of Dimitrie and Agafia Slemco, born 20 Sept. 1903 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Leontina was born at house no. 737, and the midwife at her birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. She was baptised 28 Sept. 1903 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godparents were Dimitrie Dubeu and Saveta spouse of Chiprian Gabor, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Dimitrie Slemco" and "Agafia nascuta Olar."

10L. MAFTEIU SLEMCO, son of Dimitrie and Agafia Slemco, born 24 June 1907 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Mafteiu was born at house no. 737, and the midwife at his birth was Josefine Serle of Tereblecea. He was baptised 24 June 1907 by Father Gheorghe Ciuperca, and his godfather was his uncle COSMA OLARIU, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Dimitrie alui Andrei Slemco" and "Agafia nascuta Olar."

11L. EUDOCHIA SLEMCO, daughter of Dimitrie and Agafia Slemco, born 25 May 1909 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Eudochia was born at house no. 737, and the midwife at her birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea. She was baptised 6 June 1909 by Father Gheorghe Ciuperca, and her godparents were Eleana, wife of Dimitru Dubau, her uncle COSMA OLARIU, and Elisaveta, wife of Ciprian Gabor, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Dimitrie alui Andrei Slemco" and "Agafia nascuta Olariu."

12L. EUDOCHIA OLAR, daughter of Cosma and Eleana Olar, born 2 Nov. 1898 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Eudochia was born at house no. 186, and the midwife at her birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. She was baptised 7 Nov. 1898 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godfather was Georgi Iliuc, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Cosma Olar" and "Eleana nascuta Tcaci." On 1 Dec. 1919, Eudochia served as one of the two godparents at the baptism of Aurelian Scripcariu, son of Nicolai Scripcariu and Ana Nimigean of Tereblecea, house no. 68/II.

13L. SERGHIE OLAR, son of Cosma and Eleana Olar, born 22 Aug. 1901 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died at age 3 months on 3 Dec. 1901 in Tereblecea; funeral and burial on 5 Dec. 1901 in Tereblecea, with Father Vichenti Simiganoschi presiding. The midwife at Serghie's birth was Achilina Rus of Tereblecea. Serghie was baptised 25 Aug. 1901 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godfather was Georgie Iliuc of Tereblecea. Serghie's baptismal record identifies him as "Serghie Olari," son of "Cozma fiul lui Leon Olari" and "Elena nascuta Tcaci," peasant farmers of Tereblecea. In his death record, he is called "Serghie fiul lui Cozma Olar din Tereblecea."

14L. DUMITRU OLAR, son of Cosma and Eleana Olar, born 8 Oct. 1904 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at Dumitru's birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. Dumitru was baptised 16 Oct. 1904 by Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and his godfather was Georgi Iliuc, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Dumitru's baptismal record identifies his parents as "Cosma Olariu" and "Elena nascuta Tcaciu," peasant farmers of Tereblecea.

15L. SERGIE OLAR, son of Cosma and Eleana Olar, born 22 May 1907 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. He was given the name of "Serghie" after his older brother of that name, who had died when only 3 months old. The midwife at Sergie's birth was Acsinia Nimigean of Tereblecea. Sergie was baptised 26 May 1907 by Father Gheorghe Ciuperca, and his godparents were Georgie Iliuc and Maria, wife of Ambrosie Tcaci, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Sergie's baptismal record identifies him as "Sergie Olar," son of "Cozma alui Leon Olar" and "Ileana nascuta Tcaci," peasant farmers of Tereblecea.

16L. MARIA OLAR, daughter of Ignatie and Tecla Olar, born 25 Aug. 1912 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Maria was born at house no. 186, and the midwife at her birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea. She was baptised 28 Aug. 1912 by Father Dimitrie Georgescu, and her godparents were Ioan son of Teodor Cojocariu, Maria wife of Ambrosie Tcaciu, Eleana wife of Anton Cosic, and Anna wife of Ioan Zielonca, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Ignatie al lui Leon Olariu, agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Tecla fiica lui Teodor Cojocariu si a sotiei sale Pelagia nascuta Tigara din Tereblecea."

17L. EUDOCHIA OLAR, daughter of Ignatie and Tecla Olar, born 21 Feb. 1915 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Eudochia was born at house no. 186, and the midwife at her birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea. She was baptised 23 Feb. 1915 by Father Ioan Tipa, and her godparents were Dimitrie son of Ambrosie Tcaci, and Anna wife of Ioan Zelionca, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Ignatie Olariu, fiul lui Leon Olariu si al sotiei sale Eudochia nascuta Bejusco, agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Tecla fiica lui Teodor Cojocariu si a sotiei sale Pelagia nascuta Tigara din Tereblecea."

III. The Ilie Olar family

Another Olar family of Tereblecea, whose founding patriarch was named "Ilie" (the Romanian form of "Elijah" or Elias), resided at house no. 496, and this particular family was probably a branch of my own Olars. One of my grandfather's cousins, Agripina (Olar) Panciuc, and her husband Spiridon Panciuc, were the witnesses at the 1905 wedding of Zoita Olar, granddaughter of Ilie Olar. This suggests a close kinship between Agripina and Zoita. Looking at the chronology, it is possible that Ilie was a brother of my great-great-grandfather Andrei Olar of house no. 153, who was born circa 1803. Andrei was Agripina's grandfather.

First Generation

1I. ILIE OLAR, probably a peasant farmer of Tereblecea in Bucovina who lived in the first half of the 1800s. He likely lived at house no. 496, where his children and grandchildren certainly lived. Ilie was possibly a brother of my great-great-grandfather ANDREI OLAR of house no. 153, who was born circa 1803. Ilie is known to have had at least one child:

2I. IOAN OLAR, born circa 1831

Second Generation

2I. IOAN OLAR, son of Ilie Olar, born circa 1831 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died at age 72 on 24 Nov. 1903 in Tereblecea; funeral and burial on 26 Nov. 1903 in Tereblecea, Father Vichenti Simiganoschi presiding. His death record identifies him as "Ion Olari din Tereblecea," a resident of house no. 496, and specifies his cause of death as "de batrenete" (old age). His wife was named ELEANA COJOCARIU, a resident of house no. 496, whom the Tereblecea death registers say was born circa 1839 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary, and died at age 63 on 12 July 1902 in Tereblecea, with her funeral and burial on 14 July 1902 in Tereblecea, Father Vichenti Simiganoschi presiding. Eleana's death record specifies her cause of death as "de batrenete" (old age). The entry of her death has an error, for it identifies her as "Eleana fiica lui Ion a Ilie Olar din Tereblecea," which means "Eleana, daughter of Ion, [son] of Ilie Olar of Tereblecea." Since she was born around 1839, she couldn't possibly be a daughter of Ion, son of Ilie Olar. The 1915 baptismal record of her grandson Leon Olar says her maiden name was "Cojocariu." The death record's "fiica" (daughter) is simply an error for "sotia" (spouse or wife). Similar errors may be found occasionally in other Tereblecea death records. She was the mother of Ioan's son Meftodie, and presumably also the mother of all of Ioan's children. Besides the son Meftodie, Ioan is known to have had a daughter named Zoita. Ioan is also quite probably the father of the Eugenia Olar who married Teodor Dubau of house nos. 203 and 391.

         3I. EUGENIA OLAR, probable daughter
         4I. ZOITA OLAR, born 26 June 1865
5I. MEFTODIE OLAR, born circa 1871

Third Generation

3I. EUGENIA OLAR, probably a daughter of Ioan Olar of house no. 496, she was born perhaps circa 1860. Eugenia several times served as a godmother to the children of Meftodie Olar of house no. 496, and thus was very likely a sister of Meftodie. Judging from when her children were born, Eugenia must have been older than Meftodie and may have been older than Meftodie's sister Zoita as well. Eugenia's husband was TEODOR DUBAU, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea who lived at house nos. 203 and 391, son of Georgie Dubau. Eugenia and Teodor's children were:

         6I. GEORGIE DUBAU, born 5 March 1881
         7I. SERGHIE DUBAU, born 16 Nov. 1883
         8I. NATALIA DUBAU, born 24 May 1887

4I. ZOITA OLAR, daughter of Ioan Olar, born 26 June 1865 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. On 9 June 1905 in Tereblecea, Zoita, age 40, a maiden (i.e. never before married), a resident of house no. 496, married SAVA NICOLAICIUC, age 40, born 5 Dec. 1865, a widower, a resident of house no. 300 in Tereblecea, son of Andrei Nicolaiciuc. The priest at the wedding was Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and the witnesses were Spiridon Panciuc of Tereblecea and his wife AGRIPINA, who was a daughter of Gavril Olar, son of Andrei Olar of house no. 153. Agripina was a first cousin of my grandfather Alex (Alecsie Olar), and she may also have been Zoita's first cousin. The marriage record of Zoita and Sava identifies them as "Sava a lui Andrei Nicolaiciuc teran did Tereblecea" and "Zoita fiica lui repausatului Ioan a lui Ilie Olar teran din Tereblecea" (Zoita daughter of the late Ioan son of Ilie Olar).

5I. MEFTODIE OLAR, son of Ioan Olar, born circa 1871 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. His name is the Romanian form of the ancient Greek saint's name "Methodius," which was also borne by St. Methodius who with his brother St. Cyril were the apostles to the Slavs during the 800s A.D. On 6 Nov. 1894 in Tereblecea, Meftodie, age 23, a bachelor (i.e. never before married), a resident of house no. 496, married AGRIPINA PASCAR, age 19, born circa 1875, a maiden (i.e. never before married), a resident of house no. 559 in Tereblecea, daughter of Miron and Ecaterina (Gabor) Pascar. (Note: Meftodie's father-in-law Miron Pascar was probably a cousin of the Vasilie Pascar family of house no. 162.) The priest at the wedding was Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and the witnesses were Teodor Dubeu and his wife EUGENIA, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Eugenia's maiden name was Olar, and she may well have been a sister of Meftodie -- and it's also noteworthy that Eugenia's son Georgie Dubau later married my grandfather's sister MARIA OLAR (see below). The marriage record of Meftodie and Agripina identifies the spouses as "Meftodie fiul lui Ion lui Ilie Olar taran din Tereblecea" and "Agripina fiica lui Miron Pascar taran din Tereblecea." Meftodie and Agripina are known to have had eight children:

         9I. COSMA OLAR, born 12 Sept. 1896
        10I. ELEANA OLAR, born 16 Sept. 1898
        11I. GEORGIE OLAR, born 10 Sept. 1900
        12I. LEONTINA OLAR, born 25 Jan. 1903
        13I. IOAN OLAR, born 16 June 1905
        14I. ECATERINA OLAR, born 13 March 1908
        15I. ANNA OLAR, born 3 Feb. 1911
        16I. LEON OLAR, born 8 Sept. 1915

Fourth Generation

6I. GEORGIE DUBAU, son of Teodor and Eugenia Dubau, born 5 March 1881 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Georgie was born at house no. 203, and the midwife at his birth was Pelaghiea Rus of Tereblecea. He was baptised 7 March 1881 by Father Dimitrie Seleschi, and his godmothers were Domnica Rus and Domnica Tcaci, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies him as "Georgi Dubeu," son of "Teodor Dubeu" and "Eugeniea nascuta Olari." On 30 Jan. 1905 in Tereblecea, Georgie, age 23, then residing at house no. 391, married my grandfather's sister MARIA OLAR, age 17, born 26 Aug. 1887 in Tereblecea, daughter of Ioan and Alecsandra (Toderiuc) Olar. In the marriage record, Maria appears as "Maria fiica repausatului Ioan Olariu, taran din Tereblecea" ("Maria, daughter of the late Ioan Olar, peasant farmer of Tereblecea"), and Maria's date of birth is mistakenly given as 25 Aug. instead of 26 Aug. The priest at the wedding was Father Stefan Seleschi, and the witnesses were Pavel Dubau and his wife Saveta, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Georgie and Maria had two daughters and three sons.

7I. SERGHIE DUBAU, son of Teodor and Eugenia Dubau, born 16 Nov. 1883 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Serghie was born at house no. 391, and the midwife at his birth was Pelagia Rus of Tereblecea. He was baptised 19 Nov. 1883 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmothers were Domnica Tcaci and Tetiana Holovatei, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies him as "Sergie Dubeu," son of "Teodor Dubeu" and "Eugenia nascuta Olari."

8I. NATALIA DUBAU, daughter of Teodor and Eugenia Dubau, born 24 May 1887 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Natalia was born at house no. 391, and the midwife at her birth was Todosia Olariu of Tereblecea. She was baptised 28 May 1887 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godfather was Vasilie Holovatei, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Teodor a lui Georgi Dubau" and "Eugenia nascuta Olariu."

9I. COSMA OLAR, son of Meftodie and Agripina Olar, born 12 Sept. 1896 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Cosma was born at house no. 496, and the midwife at his birth was Iftima Cojocar of Tereblecea. He was baptised 14 Sept. 1896 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godparents were Ecaterina wife of Teodor Nemigean, and Paul son of Teodor Dubeu, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Meftodie Olar" and "Agripina nascuta Pascar."

10I. ELEANA OLAR, daughter of Meftodie and Agripina Olar, born 16 Sept. 1898 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Eleana was born at house no. 496, and the midwife at her birth was Iftima Cojocar of Tereblecea. She was baptised 19 Sept. 1898 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godmother was EUGENIA wife of Teodor Dubeu, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Metodie Olar" and "Agripina nascuta Pascar."

11I. GEORGIE OLAR, son of Meftodie and Agripina Olar, born 10 Sept. 1900 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Cosma was born at house no. 496, and the midwife at his birth was Iftima Cojocari of Tereblecea. He was baptised 16 Sept. 1900 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmother was EUGENIA wife of Teodor Dubeu, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Metodie a lui Ioan Olar din Tereblecea" and "Agripina nascuta Pascariu."

12I. LEONTINA OLAR, daughter of Meftodie and Agripina Olar, born 25 Jan. 1903 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Leontina was born at house no. 496, and the midwife at her birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. She was baptised 25 Jan. 1903 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godmothers were Catrina, wife of Toader Nemigean, and EUGENIA wife of Teodor Dubeu, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Meftodie a lui Ioan Olar" and "Agripina nascuta Pascar."

13I. IOAN OLAR, son of Meftodie and Agripina Olar, born 16 June 1905 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Ioan was born at house no. 496, and the midwife at his birth was Iftimia Cojocar of Tereblecea. He was baptised 19 June 1905 by Father Stefan Seleschi, and his godmother was Ecaterina, wife of Toader son of Georgi Nimigean, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Meftodi a lui Ioan Olar, teran din Tereblecea" and "Agripina nascuta Pascariu."

14I. ECATERINA OLAR, daughter of Meftodie and Agripina Olar, born 13 March 1908 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Ecaterina was born at house no. 496 (though the number looks like "196" in her baptismal record), and the midwife at her birth was Iftimia Cojocar of Tereblecea. She was baptised 15 March 1908 by Father Gheorghe Ciuperca, and her godmother was Ileana, daughter of Toader Nimigean, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Metodie alui Ioan Olar" and "Agripina nascuta Pascar."

15I. ANNA OLAR, daughter of Meftodie and Agripina Olar, born 3 Feb. 1911 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Anna was born at house no. 496, and the midwife at her birth was Iftimia Cojocariu of Tereblecea. She was baptised 5 Feb. 1911 by Father Dimitrie Georgescu, and her godmothers were EUGENIA, wife of Teodor Dubau, and Iuliana, daughter of Teodor Nimigean, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Miftodie al lui Ioan Olariu" and "Agripina nascuta Pascar."

16I. LEON OLAR, son of Meftodie and Agripina Olar, born 8 Sept. 1915 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Leon was born at house no. 496, and the midwife at his birth was Ecaterina Ursu of Tereblecea. He was baptised 12 Sept. 1915 by Father Ioan Tipa, and his godfather was Ieremie Socaci, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Miftodia Olariu, fiul lui Ioan Olariu si al soteie sale Eleana nascuta Cojocariu, agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Agripina fiica lui Miron Pascariu si a sotiei sale Ecaterina nascuta Gabor din Tereblecea."

IV. The Isidor Olar family

One of the somewhat obscure Olar families of Tereblecea lived at house nos. 61 and 358. This was the family of Isidor Olar, whose relationship to the other Olar families of Tereblecea -- if there was any relationship -- is unknown. So far, we have not found any records that associate any members of my own Olar family to houses 61 and 348. Nevertheless, it's quite possible that Isidor belonged to my Olars, because Isidor's father Teodor may well have been my grandfather's uncle of that name who lived at house no. 547, or he may have been the Teodor Olar who lived at house no. 285, who belonged to another branch of our Olars. On the other hand, Isidor's father may not have been a member of our Olar family at all.

First Generation

1T. TEODOR OLAR of Tereblecea, born perhaps circa 1840, probably a peasant farmer who likely lived at house no. 61 (where his son is known to have lived). As mentioned above, Teodor may well have been my grandfather's uncle TEODOR OLAR, who lived at house nos. 153 and 547. If so, then Teodor's son Isidor, born circa 1867, would be the third or fourth son in that family. Another candidate, however, is the TEODOR OLAR of house no. 285, son of Ioachim Olar of house no. 153. In that case, Isidor would be probably the eldest child of that Teodor. It may be the case, however, that this Teodor, father of Isidor, was yet a third Teodor of Tereblecea who belonged to an Olar family entirely unrelated to us. Be all that as it may, Teodor was the father of:

2T. ISIDOR OLAR, born circa 1867

Second Generation

2T. ISIDOR OLAR, son of Teodor Olar, born circa 1867 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Isidor evidently was married at least twice, as may be surmised by the fact that he had a daughter circa 1893, about four years before the date of his marriage record in Tereblecea. That daughter died in 1899, at which time Isidor was living at house no. 358 in Tereblecea. It's noteworthy, however, that entries recording this earlier marriage and the baptisms of children born of this marriage nowhere appear in the Orthodox Church parish registers of Tereblecea. The most likely explanation is that Isidor and his wife, whoever she was, did not have their wedding in Tereblecea and didn't live in Tereblecea when their child was (or children were) born. Isidor's wife must have died prior to 19 Oct. 1897, which is the date of the first reading of the marriage banns in Tereblecea -- an event which suggests that Isidor probably had returned to Tereblecea by then. The Tereblecea Orthodox Church parish registers show that on or soon after 2 Nov. 1897, Isidor, age 30, bachelor, a peasant farmer living at house no. 61 in Tereblecea, married a maiden named PARASCHEVA POSTEUCA, age 27, a peasant farm living at house no. 115 (or "15"?) in Stanesti de Jos, Bucovina, daughter of Georgi Posteuca. The marriage record identifies the bridegroom and the bride as "Isidor fiul lui Teodor Olar teran din Tereblecea" and "Parascheva fiica lui Georgi Posteuca teran din Stanesti de Jos." This marriage, which apparently was not Isidor's first, was solemnised in Stanesti de Jos, a village near Tereblecea to the northeast. The three banns were read in Tereblecea, however, with the third banns being read on 2 Nov. 1897. The marriage record then notes that the marriage took place in Stanesti de Jos, with Father Ilarion Dracinschi of Tereblecea either officiating or else at recording it in Tereblecea's register. The record lists no witnesses, though -- no doubt because Isidor and Parascheva were married at Stanesti de Jos, where the full marriage record, including the witnesses' names and the marriage date, must have been entered into that village's registers. Only two children of Isidor are mentioned in Tereblecea records, which indicates that he probably lived elsewhere (presumably at Stanesti de Jos) for a significant portion of his adult married life, though he was certainly living in house no. 358 in Tereblecea in 1899 and 1901. Isidor's two known children are:

3T. VARVARA OLAR, born circa 1893
         4T. VARVARA OLAR, born 20 Sept. 1901

Third Generation

3T. VARVARA OLAR, daughter of Isidor and (NN) Olar, born circa 1893 in Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died at age 6 on 29 July 1899 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; burial and funeral on 30 July 1899 in Tereblecea, Father Vichenti Siminagoschi presiding. Varvara's birth is not recorded in Tereblecea, probably because she was born at a nearby village (perhaps Stanesti de Jos, where her father remarried in 1897). She and her father later moved back to Tereblecea, however -- possibly after Varvara's mother died. In Tereblecea, they lived at house no. 358, which is also where they were living when Varvara died. Varvara's death record identifies her as "Varvara fiica lui Isidor Olariu din Tereblecea," and indicates the cause of death was some kind of serious and painful stomach ailment.

4T. VARVARA OLAR, daughter of Isidor and Parascheva Olar, born 20 Sept. 1901 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Varvara was born at house no. 358, and the midwife at her birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. She was baptised 22 Sept. 1901 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godparents Acsenia, wife of Maftei Nemigean, and Ciprian Gabor, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Isidor a lui Teodor Olari teran din Tereblecea" and "Parascheva nascuta Posteuca." Isidor apparently named Varvara in memory of his earlier daughter who had died in 1899.

V. The Georgie Olar family

Next to nothing is known of this Olar family, which lived at house no. 327 in Tereblecea. This family may possibly be a cousin branch of my Olars, but because everything we know about this family comes from just two records from the Tereblecea Orthodox Church parish registers, we must remain in doubt exactly how it was connected to the other Olar families of Tereblecea.

First Generation

1G. GEORGIE OLAR, probably a peasant farmer of Tereblecea who lived from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s. He is called "Georgie Olar" in the 1905 death record of his grandson Ilie Olar (see below). He may be the "Georgie Olariu," peasant farmer of Tereblecea, who was one of the witnesses at the 1 Nov. 1915 marriage of my grandfather's uncle TEODOR OLAR of house nos. 153 and 547. The Georgie who witnessed Teodor's marriage may have been a brother or cousin of Teodor. Whoever this Georgie Olar was, he was the father of :

         2G. MAFTEI OLAR

Second Generation

2G. MAFTEI OLAR, son of Georgie Olar, probably was a peasant farmer of Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. He is called "Maftei Olar" in the 1905 death record of his son Ilie. He presumably lived at house no. 327, which was his son's residence. Nothing else is certainly known of Maftei but that his father was named Georgie and his son was named Ilie.

3G. ILIE OLAR, born circa 1887

Third Generation

3G. ILIE OLAR, son of Maftei Olar, born circa 1887 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died at age 18 on 1 April 1905 in Tereblecea; funeral and burial on 3 April 1905, with Father Stefan Seleschi presiding. His death record identifies him as a peasant farmer, calling him "Ilie fiul lui Maftei alui Georgie Olar din Tereblecea" (Ilie son of Maftei son of Georgie Olar of Tereblecea). The cause of death was "aprinderea plamailor," lung inflammation, i.e. a respiratory infection, perhaps pneumonia. At this time we know of no other records associating the Olar surname with house no. 327.

VI. The Nichita Olar family

The Orthodox Church parish register of Tereblecea contain several references to a Nichita Olar who lived at house nos. 19 and 480. As with most of the Olar families of Tereblecea, it is unknown how Nichita was related to the other Olars of the village. As we shall see, he almost certainly belonged to the family of Teodor Olar, son of Ioachim Olar, who lived at house no. 285. If so, then Nichita was a cousin of my own Olars.

First Generation

1N. GAVRIL OLAR, born perhaps circa 1830, probably a peasant farmer of Tereblecea who lived from the first half of the 1800s to the latter decades of the 1800s or the first two decades of the 1900s. Gavril and his wife IERINA ZIGIRA (Tigira) are mentioned in the 5 Feb. 1884 marriage record of their son Nichita, in which their names are given as "Gavril Olari" and "Ierina nascuta Zigira." Upon first seeing the name of Nichita's father, I considered that this might be another son of the GAVRIL OLAR (1831-1911) who was an older brother of my great-grandfather Ioan Olar. However, the names of Gavril Olar's three wives were Anna, Ioanna, and Elisaveta -- there is simply no room in his life for any marriage to an Irina. That means Nichita's father Gavril must be an otherwise unknown Gavril who was exactly contemporary with my ancestral uncle Gavril (unless there was an error in the marriage records, which does not appear to be the case). Considering where Nichita lived, Gavril must have been related in some way to the Hudcecs of house no. 480, who were related by marriage to the Olars of house no. 285, a cousin branch of my own Olar family. Gavril may have been a brother-in-law of Pantelemon Hudcec, who married ELEANA OLAR, daughter of Ioan Olar and Irina Dudceac of house no. 285. But to further complicate matters, the mother of my ancestral uncle Gavril Olar was likely a Hudcec and thus perhaps linked to house no. 480. Given what we know at this time, the connection of Nichita Olar to my Olars can hardly be doubted, even if the exact connection remains unknown.

2N. NICHITA OLAR, born circa 1857
         3N. MARIA OLAR, possible daughter

Second Generation

2N. NICHITA OLAR, son of Gavril and Ierina Olar, born circa 1857 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died at age 40 on 14 Sept. 1897 in Tereblecea; funeral and burial on 15 Sept. 1897, with Father Ilarion Dracinschi presiding. On 5 Feb. 1884 in Tereblecea, Nichita, age 26, then a soldier in the Austrian Dragoons, and living at house no. 19 in Tereblecea, married DOMNICA, age 41, born circa 1843, widow of Iachim Hudcic. Domnica was a peasant farmer living at house no. 98. The priest at the wedding was Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and the witnesses were Pantelemon Humeniuc and his wife Ecaterina, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. The marriage record identifies the bridegroom and the bride as "Nechita fiul lui Gavril Olari si a sotiei sale Ierina nascuta Zigira / Ostasi dela [...i....] Piret 9 Dragoner Reg. of Tereblecea" and "Domnica vadana dupa Iachim Hudcic taran din Tereblecea."

I have found no baptismal records of any children of Nichita Olar and his wife Domnica. However, either Nichita or Domnica appear as godparents in six Tereblecea baptismal records from 8 June 1891 to 24 Jan. 1898. In three of these cases, Nichita's wife Domnica was a godmother at the baptisms of children of Stefan Daneliuc and his wife MARIA OLARIU, which suggests that Maria may have been Nichita's sister. In one of these records, "Nechita Olar" was a godfather on 30 Nov. 1891. In another, "Nechita Olar" was one of the two godparents at the 14 Jan. 1895 baptism of a daughter of of Teodor Slemco and Maria Epure of house no. 401. In the last of these six records, dating from a few months after Nichita's death, "Domnica spouse of Nichita Olar" was godmother at the baptism of another daughter of Teodor Slemco and Maria Epure. This may indicate that Domnica was a Slemco or an Epure, or it could mean there was a connection between Nichita and the Leon Olar family (see above) or Iustin Olar family (see below) -- for both Leon and Iustin were related by marriage to the Slemco family.

Nichita's death record says he died at age 40 on 14 Sept. 1897, with the cause of death being "de oftica" (consumption, that is, tuberculosis). At the time of death, Nichita was a resident of house no. 480, which was also the residence of Pantelemon Hudcic and his wife ELEANA OLAR, daughter of Ioan Olar and Irina Dudceac of house no. 285. Could Nichita's father Gavril have been a brother of Eleana's father Ioan? On the other hand, Nichita's residence in house no. 480 might not indicate a blood relationship between Nichita and Eleana. Rather, their sharing the same house could be accounted for by the fact that Nichita's wife was the widow of a Hudcic, even as Eleana was married to a Hudcic. That is, house no. 480 may have been the home of the Hudcic family rather than an Olar residence per se. It is interesting, though, that Nichita's wife Domnica lived in house no. 98, not house no. 480, so perhaps 480 was an Olar residence after all -- or may it was both an Olar and a Hudcic residence. Perhaps it was through his possible sister Eleana that Nichita met Iachim Hudcic's widow Domnica. Another point to consider is that my great-great-grandfather Andrei Olar was married to a Parascheva Hudcic (which makes three separate marital connections between Olars and Hudcics).

3N. MARIA OLAR, possible daughter of Gavril and Ierina Olar, born perhaps circa 1870 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Maria's husband was a peasant farmer named STEFAN DANELIUC, son of Vasilie Daneliuc, and they lived at house nos. 626 and 118 in Tereblecea, having at least four children.

         4N. ANNA DANELIUC, born 20 Jan. 1890
         5N. DOROFTEI DANELIUC, born 5 June 1891
         6N. PANTELEMON DANELIUC, born 29 March 1893
         7N. ELISAVETA DANELIUC, born 8 Oct. 1897

Third Generation

4N. ANNA DANELIUC, daughter of Stefan and Maria Daneliuc, born 20 Jan. 1890 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Anna was born at house no. 626, and the midwife at her birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. She was baptised 24 Jan. 1890 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godmothers were Tetiana, wife of Constantin Bulbuc, and Maria, wife of Teodor Gabor, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Stefan fiul lui Vasilie Daneliuc teran din Tereblecea" and "Maria nascuta Olar."

5N. DOROFTEI DANELIUC, son of Stefan and Maria Daneliuc, born 5 June 1891 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Doroftei was born at house no. 118, and the midwife at his birth was Iftima Cojocariu of Tereblecea. He was baptised 8 June 1891 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmother was DOMNICA, wife of NECHITA OLARIU, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Stefan Daneliuc taran din Tereblecea" and "Maria nascuta Olariu."

6N. PANTELEMON DANELIUC, son of Stefan and Maria Daneliuc, born 29 March 1893 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Pantelemon was born at house no. 118, and the midwife at his birth was Iftima Cojocariu of Tereblecea. He was baptised 3 April 1893 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmother was DOMINA (sic), wife of NECHITA OLARIU, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Stefan Daneliuc taran din Tereblecea" and "Maria nascuta Olariu."

7N. ELISAVETA DANELIUC, daughter of Stefan and Maria Daneliuc, born 8 Oct. 1897 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Elisaveta was born at house no. 118, and the midwife at her birth was Iftima Cojocar of Tereblecea. She was baptised 9 Oct. 1897 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godmothers were DOMNICA, wife of NICHITA OLAR, and Tetiana, wife of Nicolai Bulbuc, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Stefan Daneliuc teran din Tereblecea" and "Maria nascuta Olar."

VII. The Iustin Olar family

Another of the somewhat obscure Olar families of Tereblecea was the Iustin Olar family which lived at house no. 604. As noted above, the Iustin Olar family was related by marriage to the Slemco family of Tereblecea, and thus may have been connected to the Leon Olar family of house no. 186 or the Nichita Olar family of house no. 480 (or to both families). At this time there is no way to tell how, or if, these Olars were related to the other Olars of Tereblecea.

First Generation

1IU. IUSTIN OLAR, born perhaps circa 1845-50 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died circa 1885 probably in Tereblecea. Iustin was probably a peasant farmer who lived at house no. 604 in Tereblecea. His wife was named ECATERINA SLEMCO, born circa 1852 probably in Tereblecea, probably a daughter of Michail Slemco, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Two daughters of Iustin and Ecaterina, born in 1883 and 1884, have been identified in the Orthodox Church parish registers of Tereblecea. During the 1880s, Iustin's wife Ecaterina was a godmother at the baptisms of three members of the Slemco family of house no. 401: on 12 Dec. 1881, Ecaterina Olari served as one of the two godparents of Nicolai Slemco; on 6 Aug. 1883, Ecaterina Olar was one of the two godmothers of Sergie Slemco, son of Teodor and Maria (Iepure) Slemco; and on 23 June 1885, Ecaterina wife of Iustin Olariu was the godmother of Ecaterina Slemco, daughter of Teodor and Maria (Iepure) Slemco. Iustin's wife Ecaterina was probably Teodor's sister, and thus a daughter of Teodor's father Michail Slemco. As mentioned above, NICHITA OLAR and his wife Domnica of house no. 480 also served as godparents at baptisms of children of Teodor Slemco, suggesting a possible kinship between Iustin and Nichita. Iustin evidently died circa 1885, for the Tereblecea marriage records say his widow Ecaterina, age 34, a peasant farmer living at house no. 604, remarried on 2 Nov. 1886 to a young bachelor named MARCO HUMENIUC, age 24, born circa 1862 probably in Tereblecea, son of Ion Humeniuc. Marco, who lived at house no. 202 in Tereblecea, was then an infantry soldier in the Austrian Army. The priest at their wedding was Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and the witnesses were Dimitrie Nemigean and his wife Anisia, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. The marriage record identifies the bridegroom and the bride as "Marco fiul lui Ion Humeniuc / Ostasi dela [...i..... ...i] 41 Inf. [Regiment?] 12 Comp din Tereblecea" and "Ecaterina vadana dupa Iustin Olariu taran din Tereblecea." The first of the three wedding banns of Marco and Ecaterina were read on 14 Oct. 1886, so we know Iustin must have died well before that date, but probably after 23 June 1885 when Ecaterina is identified in Ecaterina Slemco's baptismal record as Iustin's spouse. The two daughters of Iustin and Ecaterina were:

         2IU. EUFROSINA OLAR, born 24 May 1883
         3IU. LEONTINA OLAR, born 22 July 1884

Second Generation

2IU. EUFROSINA OLAR, daughter of Iustin and Ecaterina Olar, born 24 May 1883 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Eufrosina was born at house no. 604, and the midwife at her birth was Todosia Olari of Tereblecea. She was baptised 27 May 1883 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godmother was Anisia, wife of Dimitrie Nemigean, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Iustin Olari teran din Tereblecea" and "Ecaterina nascuta Slemco."

3IU. LEONTINA OLAR, daughter of Iustin and Ecaterina Olar, born 22 July 1884 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Leontina was born at house no. 604, and the midwife at her birth was Todosia Olari of Tereblecea. She was baptised 28 July 1884 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godparents were Dimitrie Dubau and Anisia, wife of Dimitrie Nemigean, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Iustin Olari teran din Tereblecea" and "Ecaterina nascuta Slemco."

VIII. The Alecsie Olar family

In the latter decades of the 1800s, a certain ALECSIE OLAR lived at house no. 448 in Tereblecea. Very little is known of him, and it is unknown how he may have been related to the other Olars of Tereblecea. In the Orthodox Church parish records of Tereblecea from this period, it seems that only two men named "Alecsie Olar" appear -- one of them is my grandfather, born in 1883, and the other is this Alecsie Olar of house no. 448. Whether or not this shared name is a clue that these two Alecsies were related, it is impossible to say. In any case, he was probably born circa 1820 in Tereblecea, and may have died circa 1895/6 in Tereblecea. In the Orthodox Church parish records of Tereblecea, we find the death record of ECATERINA, wife of "Alecsie Olari" of Tereblecea -- she was a peasant farmer of house no. 448, age 53, born circa 1823, died 7 Feb. 1876, buried 9 Feb. 1876 with Father Ilarion Dracinschi presiding at her funeral. Her cause of death was "de moarte fireasca," which means "death by natural causes." After Ecaterina's death, Alecsie remarried to a woman named TEODOSIA, who was more usually known as "Todosia." The name of Alecsie's second wife appears very frequently in Tereblecea's baptismal records during the latter decades of the 1800s, for she was one of the village's chief midwives assisting mothers at their childbirths. Todosia died 8 June 1896, and her husband Alecsie preceded her in death, as indicated by her death record, which identifies her as "Teodosia vadana dupa Alexe Olar din Tereblecea" (Teodosia, widow of Alexe Olar of Tereblecea), a peasant farmer of house no. 448, age 66, born circa 1830, died 8 June 1896, buried 10 June 1896 with Father Ilarion Dracinschi presiding at her funeral. Her cause of death was "de lungoare," which may refer to a long or lingering illness. It is not known if Alecsie ever had any children by either of his wives. Besides the death records of Alecsie's wives, and the numerous baptismal records in which Todosia is named as the midwife, Todosia also served as both the midwife as well as the godmother at the births and baptisms of four children born in Tereblecea -- Dimitrie Pascariu, son of Miron and Ecaterina (Gabor) Pascariu of house no. 559, baptised 26 Oct. 1889; Zaharie Nemigean, son of Casian and Parascheva (Cioban) Nemigean of house no. 44, baptised 16 March 1890; Zaharie's sister Natalia Nemigean, baptised 24 June 1895; and Zenovia Rotari, daughter of Ioan and Minodora (Orsovschi) Rotari, baptised 9 Sept. 1895. In these baptismal records, Todosia is identified as "Todosia sotia lui Alecsie Olari" and "Todosia sotia lui Alecsie Olariu." Since she was identified on 9 Sept. 1895 as Alecsie's "wife" (sotia) rather than "widow" (veduva or vadana), presumably Alecsie was still alive at that time -- but when Todosia died on 8 June 1896, she was identified as Alecsie's widow, so presumably Alecsie had died at some point between those two dates. Todosia's serving as godmother to Dimitrie Pascariu suggests the possibility that her husband Alecsie was a member of the Ilie Olar family of house no. 496 -- for Dimitrie's sister Agripina married Meftodie Olar of house no. 496, grandson of Ilie Olar (see above).

IX. The Michail Olar family

Another obscure Olar family of Tereblecea during the latter decades of the 1800s was that of a certain MICHAIL OLAR, one of the village's many peasant farmers. Hardly anything is known of him, but his wife's name was ECATERINA. In the Orthodox Church parish records of Tereblecea from this period, I have found only two men named "Michail Olar" -- one of them is my grandfather's older brother, born in 1869, and the other is this Michail Olar who with his wife witnessed a marriage in Tereblecea on 1 Nov. 1887. But, again, whether or not this shared name is a clue that these two Michails were related, it is impossible to say. The 1887 marriage record in which this Michail and his wife are named identifies the bridegroom and the bride as "Lazar Hututiu," age 24, a soldier in the Austrian army who lived at house no. 74 in Serenauti de Sus, and "Ecaterina Cupcic," age 24, a peasant farmer who lived at house no. 198 in Tereblecea, daughter of Filip Cupcic. The record identifies the witnesses as "Michail Olariu" and his wife "Ecaterina," peasant farmers of Tereblecea, and the priest was Tereblecea's Orthodox pastor, Father Dimitrie Seleschi. Presumably Michail and Ecaterina were relatives of the bride. Michail previously served as the godfather at the baptism of Lazar Rus of house no. 531 on 6 June 1881. My great-uncle Michael Olar ("Mihai" or "Michail") was born in 1869, so he would be too young to be this Michail, and anyway my great-uncle never married anyone named Ecaterina. At this time there is just no way to tell who this Michail was and to which Olar family he belonged.

X. The Parascheva Olar family

Besides the various "unplaced" Olar families of Tereblecea, the Orthodox parish records of Tereblecea also mention several Olar women whose parentage is not yet known and who cannot be placed in any of the known Olar families of my grandparents' village. One of these women was PARASCHEVA OLARIU, born perhaps circa 1865, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea who lived at house no. 278 with her husband CONSTANTIN SCRIPCARIU, son of Grigori Scripcariu. Constantin and Parascheva had a daughter named MARIA SCRIPCARIU, born 2 Aug. 1888, midwife Pelagia Rus of Tereblecea. Maria was baptized 6 Aug. 1888 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godmother was Achelina, wife of Vasilie Nemigean, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. I have found no other record of Parascheva Olariu, so it's impossible to tell how she was related to the other Olars of Tereblecea. It is interesting, however, that my great-great-grandfather Andrei Olar married a woman named PARASCHEVA HUDCIC. There is no way to tell if Constantin Scripcariu's wife Parascheva Olariu was a daughter of Parascheva Hudcic, but chronologically it is possible.

XI. The Alecsandra Olar family

While we cannot say if Parascheva Olar was related to the Hudcic family of Tereblecea, another "unplaced" Olar of Tereblecea -- a woman named Alecsandra Olar -- was certainly related to the Hudcics, on account of her marriage to Gavril Hudcic. Gavril and Alecsandra lived at house nos. 98 and 572 in Tereblecea. Although there is no way to tell if Alecsandra Olar was related to my Olars, it is chronologically possible that Alecsandra was a sister of my great-grandfather Ioan Olar. As mentioned before, Ioan's father Andrei Olar was married to Parascheva Hudcic, who is very probably related to Gavril Hudcic, Alecsandra's husband.

First Generation

1A. ALECSANDRA OLAR, born perhaps circa 1855, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea who lived at house nos. 98 and 572. Alecsandra's husband was a peasant farmer of Tereblecea named GAVRIL HUDCIC, who is known from the marriage record of his son Macsim to have died at some point prior to 11 Nov. 1912. Gavril and Alecsandra had at least three children:

         2A. NICHIFOR HUDCIC
         3A. GEORGI HUDCIC, born 19 April 1881
         4A. MACSIM HUDCIC, born 7 Aug. 1883

Second Generation

2A. NICHIFOR HUDCIC, son of Gavril and Alecsandra Hudcic, born perhaps circa 1880 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Nichifor, a peasant farmer who lived at house no. 818 in Tereblecea, was married to ELISAVETA ZEGRE, daughter of Mafteiu and Ecaterina Zegre of Tereblecea. Nichifor's name is the Romanian form of the Greek saint's name "Nikephoros" (Nicephorus). He and Elisaveta had at least one child:

         5A. SERGHIE HUDCIC, born 28 Sept. 1919

3A. GEORGI HUDCIC, son of Gavril and Alecsandra Hudcic, born 19 April 1881 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Georgi was born at house no. 98, and the midwife at his birth was Eudochiea Olari of Tereblecea. He was baptised 25 April 1881 by Father Dimitrie Seleschi, and his godfather was Ignatie Nemigian, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Gavril Hucec taran din Tereblecea" and "Alecsandra nascuta Olari." It is likely significant that Georgi was born at house no. 98, which was probably close to house no. 92, the residence of Anna Vasilas, wife of Georgi's brother Macsim.

4A. MACSIM HUDCIC, son of Gavril and Alecsandra Hudcic, born 7 Aug. 1883 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Macsim was born at house no. 572, and the midwife at his birth was Pelagia Bodor of Tereblecea. He was baptised 14 Aug. 1883 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godfather was Ignatie Nemigean, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Gavriil Hiedcic (sic) taran din Tereblecea" and "Alecsandra nascuta Olari." On 11 Nov. 1912 in Tereblecea, Macsim, then a bachelor aged 29 years 3 months, a peasant farmer living at house no. 572 in Tereblecea, married his cousin ANNA VASILAS, a maiden aged 20 years 9 months, born 13 Feb. 1892, a peasant farmer living at house no. 92 in Tereblecea, daughter of Sofronie and Matrona (Hudcic) Vasilas of Tereblecea. The priest at the wedding was Father Ioan Tipa, and the witnesses were Dometie Nimigean and his wife Ecaterina, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. The marriage record identifies the bridegroom and the bride as "Macsim fiul rapausatului Gavriil Hudcic si al sotiei sale Alecsandra nascuta Olariu agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Anna fiica lui Sofronie Vasilas si a sotiei sale Matrona nascuta Hudcic, agricultoare din Tereblecea." Notably, this marriage record includes a notation that mentions a dispensation being granted due to an impediment: the bride and groom were cousins and were so closely related that a dispensation was needed to permit the marriage. No doubt their kinship was through the bride's mother Matrona and the groom's father Gavril, who were both Hudcics. Macsim and Anna had at least one child:

         6A. ELISAVETA HUDCIC, born 11 Sept. 1917

Third Generation
5A. SERGHIE HUDCIC, son of Nichifor and Elisaveta Hudcic, born 28 Sept. 1919 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Serghie was born at house no. 818, and the midwife at his birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea. He was baptised 29 Sept. 1919 by Father Ioan Tipa, and his godmothers were Pelaghia, wife of Teodor Nimigean, and Elisaveta, daughter of Ecaterina widow of Maftei Zegrea (i.e. Serghie's own mother was one of his godmothers), peasant farmers of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Nichifor Hudcic fiul lui Gavril Hudcic si al sotiei sale Alecsandra nascuta Olariu agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Elisaveta fiica Ecaterina vaduva dupa Mafteiu Zegre din Tereblecea" (Elisaveta daughter of Ecaterina widow of Mafteiu Zegre of Tereblecea).

6A. ELISAVETA HUDCIC, daughter of Macsim and Anna Hudcic, born 11 Sept. 1917 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Elisaveta was born at house no. 572, and the midwife at her birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea. She was baptised 16 Sept. 1917 by Father Ioan Tipa, and her godmothers were Ecaterina, wife of Dometie Nimigean, and Margareta, wife of Serghie Nimigean, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Macsim Hudcic, fiul lui Gavriil Hudcic si al sotiei sale Alexandra nascuta Olariu, agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Ana fiica lui Sofronia Vasilas si a sotiei sale Matrona nascuta Hudcic din Tereblecea."

XII. The Acsenia Olar family

The Epure family of house no. 80 in Tereblecea was descended from a woman named Acsenia Olar, whose parentage and relationship to the Olar families of Tereblecea is not yet known. She was probably born during the 1830s, and was probably a peasant farmer like most residents of Tereblecea. Two generations of her descendants are known.

First Generation

1AC. ACSENIA OLAR, born perhaps circa 1835 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary, a peasant farmer who apparently lived at house no. 80 in Tereblecea. Acsenia was married to a peasant farmer of Tereblecea named IOAN EPURE, who perhaps was born circa 1830 in Tereblecea. Ioan and Acsenia had at least three children:

2AC. GRIGORIE EPURE, born circa 1856
3AC. CORNELIE EPURE, born perhaps circa 1860
4AC. ARTEMIE EPURE, born circa 1862

Second Generation

2AC. GRIGORIE EPURE, son of Ioan and Acsenia Epure, born circa 1856 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. On 1 Feb. 1881 in Tereblecea, Grigorie, then a 24-year-old bachelor serving as a soldier in the Austrian Army and living at house no. 80 in Tereblecea, married a maiden named ANNA PASCARI, born circa 1856 probably in Tereblecea, a 24-year-old peasant farmer living at house no. 49, daughter of Doroftei Pascari. The priest at the wedding was Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and the witnesses were Constantin Isopescul and his wife Mariea, peasant farmers of Bahrinestie, a village to the southwest of Tereblecea and due west of the town of Siret. The marriage record identifies the bridegroom and the bride as "Grigori fiul lui Ioan Iepure si a sotiei sale Acsenia nascuta Olari din Tereblecea, Ostasiu dela Land[velir?] Bat. 93" and "Anna fiica lui Doroftei Pascari din Tereblecea, taran." It seems probable that after their marriage Grigorie and Anna lived at house no. 49, the home of Anna's family the Pascars. No children of Grigorie and Anna are recorded in the Orthodox Church parish registers of Tereblecea. That could mean the children of Grigorie and Anna were not born in Tereblecea, Grigorie and Anna perhaps having moved to a nearby village after their marriage. On the other hand, it is quite possible that Anna died childless. Whatever the case, Anna does appear to have predeceased her husband, for Grigorie later married LEONTINA ISOPESCU, daughter of Constantin and Maria (Pascariu) Isopescu, who had served as the witnesses at Grigorie's first marriage. Grigorie and Leontina lived at house no. 49, where they had four children. The baptismal records of their children indicate that Leontina's parents moved back and forth between Tereblecea and Bahrinestie during those years. The fact that Leontina's mother was a Pascar indicates that she may have been related to Grigorie's late first wife Anna. The four children of Grigorie and Leontina were:

         5AC. DOMNICA EPURE, born 14 Nov. 1912
         6AC. VASILIE EPURE, born 10 Nov. 1914
         7AC. IOAN EPURE, born 6 April 1916
         8AC. CONSTANTIN EPURE, born 26 April 1918

3AC. CORNELIE EPURE, son of Ioan and Acsenia Epure, born perhaps circa 1860, probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Cornelie was a peasant farmer. His wife was CHRISTINA COJOCARIU, daughter of Vasilie and Domnica (Carpiuc) Cojocariu of Tereblecea. Cornelie and Christina lived in Tereblecea at house no. 763, where they had at least one child:

         9AC. LAURENTIE EPURE, born 14 May 1917

4AC. ARTEMIE EPURE, son of Ioan and Acsenia Epure, born circa 1862 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. On 9 Feb. 1892 in Tereblecea, Artemie, then a 30-year-old bachelor serving in the Austrian army and living at house no. 80 in Tereblecea, married a maiden named CHARITINA NEMIGEAN, a peasant farmer living at house no. 63 in Tereblecea, daughter of Pavel Nemigean. The priest at the wedding was Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and the witnesses were Georgi Rus and his wife Parascheva, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. The marriage record identifies the bridegroom and bride as "Artemie fiul lui Ioan Epure si a sotiei sale Acsenia nascuta Olariu, Ostasi dela Land[usufur?] din Tereblecea" and "Charitina fiica lui Pavel Nemigean taran din Tereblecea." The family of Ioan Epure and Acsenia Olar must have been friends or relatives of Georgi Rus and his wife Parascheva, for the Ruses appear as goidparents at the baptisms of several members of this Epure family. Georgi and Parascheva Rus also served as witnesses and godparents for my Paskar ancestors.

Third Generation

5AC. DOMNICA EPURE, daughter of Grigorie and Leontina Epure, born 14 Nov. 1912 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Domnica was born at house no. 49, and the midwife at her birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea. She was baptised 17 Nov. 1912 by Father Ioan Tipa, and her godmother was Domnica, daughter of Georgie Rusu, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Grigorie al lui Ioan Epure, agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Leontina fiica lui Constantin Isopescu si a sotiei sale Maria nascuta Pascariu din Tereblecea."

6AC. VASILIE EPURE, son of Grigorie and Leontina Epure, born 10 Nov. 1914 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Vasilie was born at house no. 49, and the midwife at his birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea. He was baptised 16 Nov. 1914 by Father Ioan Tipa, and his godmother was Domnica, daughter of Georgie Rusu, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Grigorie Epure, fiul lui Ioan Epure si al sotiei sale Acsenia nascuta Olar, agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Leontina fiica lui Constantin Isopescu si a sotiei sale Maria nascuta Pascariu din Bahrinesti."

7AC. IOAN EPURE, son of Grigorie and Leontina Epure, born 6 April 1916 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Ioan was born at house no. 49, and the midwife at his birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea. He was baptised 12 April 1916 by Father Ioan Tipa, and his godmother was Domnica, daughter of Georgie Rusu, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Grigorie Epure, fiul lui Ioan Epure si al sotiei sale Acsenia nascuta Olar, agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Leontina fiica lui Constantin Isopescu si a sotiei sale Maria nascuta Pascariu din Tereblecea."

8AC. CONSTANTIN EPURE, son of Grigorie and Leontina Epure, born 26 April 1918 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Constantin was born at house no. 49, and the midwife at his birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea. He was baptised 29 April 1918 by Father Ioan Tipa, and his godmothers were Alecsandra, wife of Dimitrie Gabor, and Domnica, daughter of Georgie Rusu, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Grigorie Epure, fiul lui Ioan Epure si al sotiei sale Acsenia nascuta Olar, agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Leontina fiica lui Constantin Isopescu si a sotiei sale Maria nascuta Pascariu din Bahrineste."

9AC. LAURENTIE EPURE, son of Cornelie and Christina Epure, born 14 May 1917 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Laurentie was born at house no. 763, and the midwife at his birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea. He was baptised 20 May 1917 by Father Ioan Tipa, and his godmother was Veronica, wife of Vasilie Rusu, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Cornelie Epure fiul lui Ioan Epure si al sotiei sale Acsenia nascuta Olar, agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Christina fiica lui Vasilie Cojocariu si a sotiei sale Domnica nascuta Carpiuc din Bahrinesti."

XIII. The Tecla Olar family

The Orthodox Church records of Tereblecea show two instances of intermarriage between members of the Olar families and members of the Vasilas families of the village. One of them involved a woman named Tecla Olar, whose parentage and relationship to the Olar families of Tereblecea is not yet known. She was probably born during around 1870, and was probably a peasant farmer like most residents of Tereblecea. Two generations of her descendants are known.

First Generation

1TC. TECLA OLAR, born perhaps circa 1870, perhaps in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Most likely a peasant farmer's daughter, Tecla married LUCA VASILAS, also probably a peasant farmer. Luca and Tecla had a son:

3TC. CONSTANTIN VASILAS, born perhaps circa 1895

Second Generation

2TC. CONSTANTIN VASILAS, son of Luca and Tecla Vasilas, born perhaps circa 1895 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Constantin was a peasant farmer living at house no. 713 in Tereblecea. He married ECATERINA HANCERIUC, daughter of Mihail and Eudochia (Cirstiuc) Hanceriuc of Vascauti-on-Siret, a village near Tereblecea to the south and adjacent to the town of Siret. Constantin and Ecaterina had three children:

         3TC. ILIE VASILAS, born 23 July 1915
         4TC. DIMITRIE VASILAS, born 2 Oct. 1917
         5TC. IOAN VASILAS, born 24 Jan. 1919

Third Generation

3TC. ILIE VASILAS, son of Constantin and Ecaterina Vasilas, born 23 July 1915 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Ilie was born at house no. 713, and the midwife at his birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea. He was baptised 26 July 1915 by Father Ioan Tipa, and his godfather was Spiridon Cojocariu, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Constantin Vasilas, fiul lui Luca Vasilas si al sotiei sale Tecla nascuta Olariu, agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Ecaterina fiica lui Mihail Hanceriuc si a sotiei sale Eudochia nascuta Cirstiuc din Vascauti pe Siret."

4TC. DIMITRIE VASILAS, son of Constantin and Ecaterina Vasilas, born 2 Oct. 1917 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Dimitrie was born at house no. 713, and the midwife at his birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea. He was baptised in Oct. 1917 (the day of the month is missing from the record) by Father Ioan Tipa, and his godmother was Domnica, widow of Alexie Sandul, peasant farmer of Tereblecea (i.e. the midwife was also the godmother). His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Constantin Vasilas fiul lui Luca Vasilas si al sotiei sale Tecla nascuta Olariu, agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Ecaterina fiica lui Mihail Hanceriuc si a sotiei sale Eudochia nascuta Carstiuc din Vascauti p/S."

5TC. IOAN VASILAS, son of Constantin and Ecaterina Vasilas, born 24 Jan. 1919 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Ioan was born at house no. 713, and the midwife at his birth was Ecaterina Ursul of Tereblecea. He was baptised 24 Jan. 1919 by Father Ioan Tipa, and his godfather was Spiridon Cojocariu, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Constantin Vasilas fiul lui Luca Vasilas si al sotiei sale Tecla nascuta Olar agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Ecaterina fiica lui Mihail Hanceriuc si a sotiei sale Eudochia nascuta Cirstiuc din Vascauti p/S."

XIV. The Ana Olar family

Besides the marriage of Tecla Olar and Luca Vasilas, the Orthodox Church parish records of Tereblecea also show the marriage of a woman named Ana Olar and Dimitrie Vasilas. It cannot yet be said whether or not these two Olar brides were related, nor whether or not the two Vasilas grooms were related -- but it is certainly possible. In any case, Ana Olar was perhaps born circa 1870, and was probably a peasant farmer like most residents of Tereblecea. Two generations of her descendants are known.

First Generation

1AN. ANA OLARIU, born perhaps circa 1870, perhaps in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Most likely a peasant farmer's daughter, Ana married DIMITRIE VASILAS, also probably a peasant farmer. Dimitrie and Ana had a son:

2AN. ROMAN VASILAS, born perhaps circa 1895

Second Generation

2AN. ROMAN VASILAS, son of Dimitrie and Ana Vasilas, born perhaps circa 1895 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Roman was a peasant farmer living in a secondary dwelling of house no. 78 (called 78/II) in Tereblecea. He married ECATERINA COJOCARIU, daughter of Sofronie and Anisia (Nimigean) Cojocariu of Tereblecea. Roman and Ecaterina had a child:

         3AN. ELEANA VASILAS, born 25 Aug. 1919

Third Generation

3AN. ELEANA VASILAS, daughter of Roman and Ecaterina Vasilas, born 5 Aug. 1919 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Eleana was born at house no. 78/II, and the midwife at her birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea. She was baptised 1 Sept. 1919 by Father Ioan Tipa, and her godparents were Ioan Vasilas, peasant farmer of Vascauti-on-Siret, and Domnica, wife of Damian Nimigean, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Roman Vasilas fiul lui Dimitrie Vasilas si al sotiei sale Ana nascuta Olariu agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Ecaterina fiica lui Sofronie Cojocariu si a sotiei sale Anisia nascuta Nimigean din Tereblecea."

XV. The Varvara Olar family

Among the several Olar women who cannot yet be placed in any of the known Olar families of Tereblecea was a certain Varvara Olar, born perhaps circa 1865-70, whose husband was named Vasilie Gabor. She does not appear to be the same as our cousin Varvara Olar, daughter of my great-grandfather's older brother Gavril, for our cousin Varvara was born circa 1856, married in 1885 to Nestor Aurite, and had children of that marriage from 1887 to 1899. Also, she certainly could not be the same as Varvara Olari, born in 1901, daughter of Isidor Olari and Parascheva Posteuca (see above), for that Varvara is clearly too young to be the grandmother of Pavel Pauliuc, born in 1914. Whoever she was, two generations of her descendants are known.

First Generation

1V. VARVARA OLAR, born perhaps circa 1865, perhaps in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Most likely a peasant farmer's daughter, Varvara married VASILIE GABOR, also probably a peasant farmer. Vasilie and Varvara had a daughter:

2V. DOMNICA GABOR, born perhaps circa 1890

Second Generation

2V. DOMNICA GABOR, daughter of Vasilie and Varvara Vasilas, born perhaps circa 1890 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Domnica was probably a peasant farmer. She lived at house no. 82 in Tereblecea with her husband EMILIAN PAULIUC, a laborer of Tereblecea, son of Ioan and Eleana (Epure) Pauliuc of Tereblecea. Emilian and Domnica had a child:

         3V. PAVEL PAULIUC, born 28 Aug. 1914

Third Generation

3V. PAVEL PAULIUC, son of Emilian and Domnica Pauliuc, born 28 Aug. 1914 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Pavel was born at house no. 82, and the midwife at his birth was Acsenia Nimigean of Tereblecea. He was baptised 31 Aug. 1914 by Father Dimitrie Georgescu, and his godmother was Acsenia, wife of Andreiu Vasilas, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Emilian Pauliuc, fiul lui Ioan Pauliuc si al sotiei sale Eleana nascuta Epure, lucrator din Tereblecea" and "Domnica fiica lui Vasilie Gabor si a sotiei sale Varvara nascuta Olar din Tereblecea."

XVI. The Irina Olar family

In addition to the Varvara Olar family link to the Pauliuc family of Tereblecea, another Olar family was connected by marriage to the Pauliucs -- the family of Irina Olar, who was a contemporary as well as a possible sister or cousin of Varvara. Irina may have been related to the Ioan Olar family of Vascauti and Tereblecea (see below), which in turn may have been related to the Teodor Olar family of house no. 285, a cousin branch of my own Olar family. Irina's husband was a member of the Dubau family of Tereblecea, no doubt related in some way to Georgie Dubau, husband of my grandfather's sister Maria Olar, and Iulita Dubau, wife of my grandmother's uncle Ioan Pascar. Two generations of Irina Olar's descendants are known.

First Generation

1IR. IRINA OLAR, born perhaps circa 1865, perhaps in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Most likely a peasant farmer's daughter, Irina married LEONTIE DUBAU, also probably a peasant farmer. Leontie and Irina had a daughter:

2IR. EUFROSINA DUBAU, born perhaps circa 1890

Second Generation

2IR. EUFROSINA DUBAU, daughter of Leontie and Irina Dubau, born perhaps circa 1890 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Eufrosina was probably a peasant farmer. She lived at house no. 349 in Tereblecea with her husband CONSTANTIN PAULIUC, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea, son of Constantin and Anna (Gabor) Pauliuc of Tereblecea. Constantin and Eufrosina had a child:

         3IR. VASILIE PAULIUC, born 4 Sept. 1914

Third Generation

3IR. VASILIE PAULIUC, son of Constantin and Eufrosina Pauliuc, born 4 Sept. 1914 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Vasilie was born at house no. 349, and the midwife at his birth was Domnica Sandul of Tereblecea. He was baptised 7 Sept. 1914 by Father Ioan Tipa, and his godfather was Pantelemon son of Visarion Chirila, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Constantin Pauliuc, fiul lui Constantin Pauliuc si al sotiei sale Anna nascuta Gabor, agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Eufrosina fiica lui Leontie Dubau si a sotiei sale Irina nascuta Olar din Tereblecea."

XVII. An Olar family of Vascauti and Tereblecea

The Orthodox Church parish registers of Tereblecea not infrequently mention various individuals and families from the nearby village of Vascauti pe Siretiu, that is, Vascauti-on-Siret (known in the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire as "Waschkoutz"), which was located on the west bank of the River Sereth (Siret) even as Tereblecea was located near the east bank of the same river. Given these villages' proximity, no doubt many people in one village were related to villages in the other. Among the Vascauti residents who appear in Tereblecea's records was the family of a certain Ioan Olar, a peasant farmer who lived at house no. 18 in Vascauti. Ioan was probably born circa 1850 or somewhat earlier than that. It's not known if Ioan was related to any of the Olar families of Tereblecea, but it's certainly possible. It may be significant that a certain Stefan Olariu, peasant farmer of Vascauti, appears several times as a godfather in the baptismal records of the Teodor Olar family of house no. 285 in Tereblecea, which was a cousin branch of my own Olar family. (See, for example, the 17 Jan. 1909 baptism of Leon Olariu, grandson of Toador Olar of house no. 285.) Perhaps Ioan Olar and Stefan Olariu were related, and if so, then the Ioan Olar family of Vascauti may have been members of the Olar family of house no. 285, and thus Ioan may have been among my father's Olar kin.

First Generation

1VT. IOAN OLAR, born perhaps circa 1850 probably in Vascauti, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Ioan was a peasant farmer who lived at house no. 18 in Vascauti. It is unknown if Ioan was related to any of the Olar families of Tereblecea, though it's possible that he was. He is known to have had two daughters:

2VT. EUDOCHIA OLAR, born circa 1874
3VT. MARIA OLAR, born perhaps circa 1875

Second Generation

2VT. EUDOCHIA OLAR, daughter of Ioan Olar, born circa 1874 probably in Vascauti, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. On or shortly after 10 Feb. 1892 in Vascauti, Eudochia, then an 18-year-old maiden peasant farmer living at house no. 18 in Vascauti, married a bachelor named IOAN STRUGARIU, age 24, born circa 1868 probably in Tereblecea, Bucovina, a soldier in the Austrian Reserves and living at house no. 438 in Tereblecea, son of Andrei Strugariu. The marriage record in the Tereblecea parish registers does not list any witnesses, because the marriage took place in Vascauti while the three marriage banns were read by Father Dimitrie Seleschi in Tereblecea. The date of the third banns was 10 Feb. 1892. The marriage record identifies the bridegroom and bride as "Ioan fiul lui Andrei Strugariu / Ostasi dela Rezerva din Tereblecea" and "Eudochia fiica lui Ioan Olari taran din Vascauti - pe Siretiu" (Eudochia daughter of Ioan Olari, peasant farmer of Vascauti-on-Siret). Ioan and Eudochia lived at house no. 438 in Tereblecea until circa 1903, when they moved to house no. 619. They had two sons and five daughters.

         4VT. VASILE STRUGARIU, born 2 Sept. 1894
         5VT. MARIA STRUGARIU, born 24 Oct. 1896
         6VT. ELISAVETA STRUGARIU, born 26 May 1899
         7VT. ECATERINA STRUGARIU, born 17 April 1902
         8VT. GEORGE STRUGARIU, born 17 April 1904
         9VT. LEONTINA STRUGARIU, born 28 July 1905
        10VT. MARIA STRUGARIU, born 5 Feb. 1907

3VT. MARIA OLAR, daughter of Ioan Olar, born perhaps circa 1875 probably in Vascauti, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. On 23 April 1902, Maria served as godmother to her niece Ecaterina Strugariu (see below). In Ecaterina's baptismal record, Maria is identified as "Maria fiica lui Ion Olar teran din Vascauti," showing that Maria was then a peasant living in Vascauti a short distance to the southwest of Tereblecea.

Third Generation

4VT. VASILE STRUGARIU, son of Ioan and Eudochia Strugariu, born 2 Sept. 1894 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Vasile was born at house no. 438, and the midwife at his birth was Todosia Olar of Tereblecea. He was baptised 3 Sept. 1894 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and his godmother was Elisaveta, wife of Ion Cojocari, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Ioan lui Andrei Strugariu taran din Tereblecea" and "Eudochia nascuta Olar."

5VT. MARIA STRUGARIU, daughter of Ioan and Eudochia Strugariu, born 24 Oct. 1896 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; died before 5 Feb. 1907 probably in Tereblecea. Maria was born at house no. 438, and the midwife at her birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. She was baptised 2 Nov. 1896 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godmother was Elisaveta, wife of Ion Cojocar, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Ion lui Andrei Strugar teran din Tereblecea" and "Eudochia nascuta Olar." Maria evidently died young prior to 5 Feb. 1907, when her parents had another daughter named Maria.

6VT. ELISAVETA STRUGARIU, daughter of Ioan and Eudochia Strugariu, born 26 May 1899 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Elisaveta was born at house no. 438, and the midwife at her birth was Iftima Cojocari of Tereblecea. She was baptised 29 May 1899 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godmother was Maria, daughter of Ion Cojocari, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Ion lui Andrei Strugari teran din Tereblecea" and "Eudochia nascuta Olar."

7VT. ECATERINA STRUGARIU, daughter of Ioan and Eudochia Strugariu, born 17 April 1902 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Ecaterina was born at house no. 438, and the midwife at her birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. She was baptised 23 April 1902 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and her godparents were Anton Costiuc, and her aunt MARIA, daughter of ION OLAR, peasant farmers of Vascauti. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Ioan a lui Andrii Strugari teran din Tereblecea" and "Eudochia nascuta Olar."

8VT. GEORGE STRUGARIU, son of Ioan and Eudochia Strugariu, born 17 April 1904 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. George was born at house no. 619, and the midwife at his birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. He was baptised 25 April 1904 by Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and his godfather was Anton Costiuc, peasant farmer of Vascauti. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Ioan a lui Andreiu Strugariu taran din Tereblecea" and "Eudochia nascuta Olar."

9VT. LEONTINA STRUGARIU, daughter of Ioan and Eudochia Strugariu, born 28 July 1905 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Leontina was born at house no. 619, and the midwife at her birth was Achilina Rusu of Tereblecea. She was baptised 31 July 1905 by Father Stefan Seleschi, and her godparents were Toder, son of Ioan Costiuc, peasant farmer of Vascauti-on-Siret, and Agripina, wife of Nichita Simionoviciu, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Ioan a lui Andrii Strugar teran din Tereblecea" and "Eudochia nascuta Olar."

10VT. MARIA STRUGARIU, daughter of Ioan and Eudochia Strugariu, born 5 Feb. 1907 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Maria was born at house no. 619, and the midwife at her birth was Acsenia Nimigean of Tereblecea. She was baptised 10 Feb. 1907 by Father Stefan Seleschi, and her godmother was EUFROSINA, wife of CONSTANTIN PAULIUC (see above), and Anisia, wife of Ioan Tigira, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Ioan alui Andrei Strugar, taran din Tereblecea" and "Eudochia nascuta Olar." The fact that Maria and her godmother Eufrosina were both daughters of Olar women suggests that their mothers were related.

Olar Victims of the Communists

IN EARLY 2007, I discovered the names of some Romanian Olars who were listed at the website of the Procesul Comunismului project, which is devoted to studying the bloody history of Communist tyranny in Romania. In the project's dictionary of Romanians who were arrested, tortured, enslaved, and/or murdered during the Communist tyranny, six Olars were found. Three of them were from my grandparents' village of Tereblecea in Bucovina, as follows:

OLAR, Dumitru. Din Basarabia (Tereblecea). Deportat n lagărele din Siberia, la 13 mai 1941. ("Deported to camps in Siberia on 13 May 1941")
OLAR, Dumitru Ion. Din Basarabia (Tereblecea). Ridicat de N.K.V.D. şi dus la muncă silnică la lacul Onega, n 1944. ("Arrested by the N.K.V.D. and taken to forced labor at Lake Onega in 1944")
OLAR, Zenovia. Din Basarabia (Tereblecea). Deportat n lagărele din Siberia, la 13 iunie 1941. ("Deported to camps in Siberia on 13 June 1941")

Zenovia Olar, Dumitru Olar, and Dumitru Ion Olar are also listed among the victims of Russian Communist tyranny on pages 57 and 83 of Professor Ion Cretu's 333-page history, Tereblecea: un sat la margine de tara ("Tereblecea: A Village on the Border of the Country"), published in 2010. From Cretu's history, we learn that Dumitru Olar, deported 13 May 1941, was a son of Zenovia Olar, who was deported one month later. Cretu also says that when the Communists sent Zenovia away, she left behind real estate consisting of one house, one barn with stables, and 4 hectares of land, all of which were left to be administered by her other son Teodor Olar. As for Dumitru Ion Olar (i.e. Dumitru son of Ion Olar), it is unknown to which Olar family of Tereblecea he belonged. However, there can be little doubt that Zenovia was the wife of my grandfather Alex's cousin Ilie Olar, who is known from various records to have had a wife named Zenovia by whom he had two sons, Dimitrie and Teodor. At the time of these Communist depredations, Bucovina was a part of Basarabia, which was occupied by the Russian Communist Empire during the 1940s, and the northern half of Bucovina was thus severed from Romania and swallowed. These three Olars were among the many victims of Communism in Bucovina, being deported to Gulag slave labor camps in Kazakhstan and Siberia. My grandparents left Bucovina in or about 1910, which was 31 years before these Olars from Tereblecea were forced into slavery.

It is unpleasant to contemplate what terrible things happened to the persons listed in this project's dictionary, especially when some of them were my cousins. Hell Moved Its Border (1960), by the late Dumitru Nimigeanu, a resident of Tereblecea, is a personal account of the horrors inflicted on the people of Bucovina by their Russian Communist "liberators" and their local collaborators. In his book, Nimigeanu named four Romanians with the surname "Olariu," three of whom he identified as residents of Tereblecea:

Vasile Olariu, who along with Vasile Cosic was "delegated to supervise people suspected of wishing to escape to Rumania. When anyone escaped, these two put the fugitive's family on the black list for eventual deportation to Siberia" (page 37). That was during 1940 and 1941, after the Russian Communists had illegally occupied northern Bucovina and Basarabia, but prior to the first deportations to Siberia on 13 April 1941. Unhappily I note that this Vasile Olariu could have been my father's first cousin of that name, one of the sons of Mihai Olar, eldest brother of my grandfather. "Cosic" was the maiden name of the mother of my father's cousin -- these two collaborating Vasiles of Tereblecea may themselves have been cousins. (Alternatively, this Vasile Olariu may have been another cousin of my father's, a son of Iacob Olar, who was an older brother of my grandfather. Iacob's son Vasile was about a year younger than Mihai's son Vasile.)
Dumitru Olariu, a Romanian from Bucovina who had been deported to Siberia. "In August of the same year [1942] I was sent, along with two other Rumanians called Vasile Grigorovici and Dumitru Olariu, to Dontzkoi, another collecting centre, also in the district of Aktyubinsk" (page 74). This Dumitru Olariu may well be the same as the abovementioned Dumitru Olar of Tereblecea, son of Zenovia Olar, but the book's author does not say where this Dumitru was from.
Ioan Olariu, a brother-in-law of the book's author Dumitru Nimigeanu. Ioan was imprisoned around 1946 or 1947 for being unable to provide the quota of grain that the Communist slave-masters demanded. "Those who were unable to deliver up their quota were kept in prison until the relatives delivered it for them. That is what happened to three of my brothers-in-law: Ioan Olariu, Stefan Vasilasi and Sarbu Socaciu" (page 133).
Natalia Cozma Olariu, a nursing mother whom the Communists kidnapped in 1947. "During the 45 days we had been in Tereblecea the militia had taken Natalia Cozma Olariu -- a woman who was still nursing a baby -- to some unknown destination. The baby had been left in the care of strangers" (page 138). "Cozma" was apparently the name of her father. By that time, the book's author had managed to escape from Siberia and made it back to Tereblecea, but Natalia's arbitrary and immoral kidnapping drove home the stark fact that he and his family would never be safe under Communism, which helped to encourage him to escape with his wife and daughter from the Russian Communist Empire later in 1947 and finally make it to the Free West in January 1950.

Olars of Modern Tereblecea

MOVING FORWARD to the present day, Professor Ion Cretu's 2010 book Tereblecea: un sat la margine de tara includes a directory of Tereblecea's contemporary residents, indexed by house number and surname. Thanks to Cretu's book, we know that the Olar surname is still extant in Tereblecea today, and in fact is not all that rare in the village. Cretu's directory shows 27 Olar families living in as many households. Although the relationships of household members are not explicitly stated, usually the relationships can be deduced or reasonably presumed from their patronymic names and their dates of birth. The Olar households of modern Tereblecea are as follows:
