Numbered among my mother's ancestors is the Mayflower Pilgrim Thomas Rogers, a camlet merchant who joined the Separatists and migrated with them to Leiden, Holland, later embarking on the Mayflower's voyage to plant an English colony in the New World. Rogers came of a family that had lived for at least three generations in Watford, Northamptonshire, England, where he likely was born. In 1597, Rogers married Alice Cosford, daughter of George Cosford of Watford. He and Alice had four known children, including my mother's ancestors Joseph, born circa 1610 in England or Holland, and John, born circa 1614 in England or Holland. In the Dutch records of Leiden, Alice is called "Elsgen," which earlier writers misinterpreted as the Dutch equivalent of "Elizabeth." In fact, "Elsgen" is a Dutch form of "Alice," and "Lysbeth" is Dutch for "Elizabeth." Thomas Rogers came over on the Mayflower with his son Joseph, but Alice stayed behind in Leiden. Joseph's younger brother John later came to Plymouth, Massachusetts, about 1630. Rogers died the first winter in Plymouth, sometime after he signed the Mayflower Compact on 11 Nov. 1620. Alice's date of death is unknown, but she appears as a widow in 1622 in the Dutch records of Leiden with her son John and daughters "Lysbeth" and "Grietgen" (Margaret).
