Descendants of William HOPKINS
Generation No. 1
1. WILLIAM1 HOPKINS was born Abt. 1625 in ?England, and died 28 Apr 1688 in Roxbury, Suffolk, Mass. He married HANNAH ANDREWS 1655, daughter of THOMAS ANDREWS and ANN UNKNOWN. She was born 23 Jun 1639 in Dorchester, Suffoll, Ma, and died 05 Jan 1678 in Roxbury, Suffolk, MA. Notes for WILLIAM HOPKINS: This line appears to have started with William Hopkins who first appears in the records of Roxbury, MA,. as a grave digger around 19 January 1656 of which he was paid two shillings for men and winnen graves and children under 10 years of age, he is to have twelve pence per child. pg. 73 Colonial Hopkins and Families, although no record has been found of the marriage, his wife Hannah Andrews, Daughter of Thomas Andrews, Sr. of Dorchester, MA, whose will was written 17 Dec 1667 and proved 4 Aug 1673---Thomas having died May 27, 1673---In this will Thomas named wife Ann, son Thomas and daughter Hannah...legacy was restricted to the children of daughter Hannah, born before the date of the will. William Hopkins put in a caution against the will, but differences were compose.Children of W ILLIAM HOPKINS and HANNAH ANDREWS are:2. i. H ANNAH2 HOPKINS, b. 03 Jan 1657, Roxbury, Suffolk, MA; d. 1692, Jamaica, West Indies.ii. T HOMAS HOPKINS, b. Abt. 1660; d. 21 Apr 1676, Sudbury. Notes for THOMAS HOPKINS: Killed by Indian's April 21, 1676, under command of Capt. Samuel Wadsworth. page 75 Colonial Hopkins and Families Thomas Hopkins was in garrison in Marlborough 24 Apr 1676. (Bodge:op cit.p 217)Edward Cowel in a statement sworn to 19 Jun 1676, says:" I went back and buried four men which were killed whereof Thomas Hawley and Hopkinses son both of Toxbury...(ibid p.226) This engagement of Wadworth at Sudbury, was 21 Apr 1676. As seen above, Thomas Hopkins was reported in garrison at Marlborough, a town adjoing Sudbury, 24 Apr, three days after the fig. Unless the report was made before Wadswroth's engagement was known at Marlborough, it would appear that Thomas Hopkins was not killed in the Sudbury fight, and it may be that it was his brother William, either one fitting the description of "Hopkinses son, of Roxbury" The presence near Sudbury of Thomas at the time fo the fight naturally would point to him as the man killed, but Savages's statement that William was killed "during the year" (1676) and a more explicit mention of Thomas in the statement of Cowell are not conclusive. If there be a roster of the troops in the Sudbury fight it might clear this point, but Bodge does not mention any other Hopkins death than this "Hopkinses son." iii. W ILLIAM HOPKINS, b. 06 May 1660, Roxwell, Chelmsford, Essex, England; d. 1676, North Hampton, MA. Notes for WILLIAM HOPKINS: Was a soldier at Northampton under Capt. Turner and was killed my Indians in 1676.iv. M ARY HOPKINS, b. Abt. 1661; d. 1678, Roxwell, Chelmsford, Essex, England. Notes for MARY HOPKINS: Died of Smallpox3. v. S AMUEL HOPKINS, b. Abt. 1663; d. 23. FRANCIS5 HOPKINS, JR. (FRANCIS4, JOSEPH3, JOSEPH2, WILLIAM1) was born 1754 in Rhode Island, and died 25 Jul 1823 in Bath County, Kentucky. He married ANN UNKNOWN. Notes for FRANCIS HOPKINS, JR.: Taken from "History of Southwest Virginia", 1746-1798, Washington county 1777-1870, pages 275-2777. By Lewis Preston Summers, Published in Baltimore in 1966 by the Genealogical Publishing Company. Found Genealogical Forum Library-Portland, Oregon Jan 2997In 1779, in Virginia all bank notes of the whole emissions of 20 May 1777 and 11 Apr 1778 were taken out of circulation since counterfeits had been issued by "our enemies of New York and found to be spreading, etc." In Washington county, Virginia 4 May 1778 (Annals of Southwest Virginia, 1768-1800, part 2 Lewis Preston Summer) FRANCIS HOPKINS was held on suspicion of his feloniously counterfeiting or erasing, altering sundry Treasury Notes...knowing same to be bad...He said he was in no was quality...but it is opinion of the Court that the said Francis Hopkins was guilty of passing Treasury Notes knowing the same to be bad.... On 19 May 1778 the Grand Jury returned to the Bar and presented as followeth 'viz Francis Hopkins for knowingly passing two bad ten dollar bills and buying bad money at an under rate. 19 May 1778-Ordered that Francis Hopkins be fined 50 pounds lawful money of Virginia and 6 months imprisonment for passing counterfeit money, 20 Aug 1778--- Ordered that Francis Hopkins be imprisoned within the walls of Forest at William Cock's old Place on Renfroes' Creek alias Spring Creek until the County Gaol is completed except on some extraordinary emergency and then only by the permission of a magistrate if there is one within 5 miles of said Fort. His securities were Zachariah Wolsey Frathia Wall, William Hopkins, and George Wolsey 22 Apr 1779---Estate of William Hopkins who had been taken and committed to Gaol o this county for Treasonable practices against this State....had broken Gaol and escaped...be sold and money deposited in Treasury...appearing he has no family and no stated place of abode. 22 Mar 1780---Escheator Indenture of Estate of William Hopkins 18 Sep 1782---Joseph Cole was security for the good behavior of Williams Hopkins. 20 May 1783---William Hopkins forfeited above bond for stealing a horse. Information below is probably for Francis Hopkins SR. since it states he was hanged abt1779. Now this is all that actually occurred in the County records, but 100years later Draper started checking incidents of historical interest and according to his report, Francis Hopkins was hanged by William Campbell and a Negro, Thomas about 1779. Is was said he was a Tory and many other things...but from a very careful study, the conclusion is that the occurrence was occasioned by the fact that the Scotch-Irish were unhappy with the people who migrated down from Connecticut, New Jersey and New York...even in Draper's account, it appeared that Campbell chased Francis Hopkins and hanged him, only because he was told that he was a trouble-maker.....
