She met (1) JOHN WILLIAM SEELBACH, son of HEINRICH SEELBACH and WILHELMINA HELPENSTELL. He was born 31 May 1859 in Linn Flat, Texas, and died 16 Oct 1950 in , Nacogdoches, Texas. She married (2) UNKNOWN BELL. Notes for CATHERINE ELIZABETH KOLB: Died in Terrell State Mental Hospital (insane) CATHERINE ELIZABETH KOLB - It is reported (in 1996) by Cleveland Kolb that his grandmother, Catherine Elizabeth Kolb Bell, was committed to the State Insane Asylum in order to take away her wealth and property. He stated she died in Rusk State Hospital, however, after some investigation, a record of her death was located at Terrell State Hospital in Kaufman Co. The verification, was begun as follows: "a petition, filed in 1914, in Nacogdoches, by a J.E. Birdwell who asks for guardianship of 100 acres owned by Elizabeth Bell, of unsound mind, now residing in Terrell, Kaufman Co., who has three children residing in Nacogdoches Co." {This petition was found in the Nacogdoches Co., probate records index} I also found a Catherine Bell at the Rusk State Hospital, on the 1920 census, but it has since been found this is not our Catherine Elizabeth Bell. A personal visit to Rusk hospital revealed no info on her. Terrell State Hospital, had the record of her admittance (June 8, 1900) and the date of her death (September 5, 1947). Catherine Elizabeth Bell never left Terrell State Hospital. The person to contact on the Hospital index was J.H. Seelbach who married her sister, Clarissa Ann Kolb. J.H. Seelbach died in 1911. In 1914, J. E. Birdwell filed for guardianship of Catherine Elizabeth's land, and Clarissa died in 1934. Catherine Elizabeth was apparently forgotten about after that. On her son William C. Kolb's SS5 (original application for SS card) her name is Catherine Elizabeth Kolb Bell. The typed name Kolb is marked out and replaced with the handwritten name Bell, probably as the result of a question from the interviewer about her maiden name being the same as her husbands. Since William listed his adopted father, Charlie Kolb, as his natural father, these facts being unknown to the interviewer he probably assumed the mother had a different maiden name, when in fact she did not. William likely put his mother's married name to avoid further questions from the government interviewer. Since the name was different, it probably satisfied the interviewer. In re the SS5, it is likely William did not care to disclose the details of his bastard birth to the Gov Interviewer, so he probably just gave the interviewer the name Bell (really her married name to a man after his birth) to satisfy him and avoid further questions or complications in obtaining the SS card. The following are my notes and have so far found nothing to refute the theory: Charlie (C.W. Kolb) was actually William's second cousin and his mother's first cousin, the two of them (Charlie and Catherine) being the offspring of brothers John E. and William Kolb, (original German immigrants) respectively. Catherine Elizabeth Kolb Bell's parents are William Kolb and Kathrina Elizabeth Seelbach. I base my conclusion of proof on the similarity of their names and the fact she is listed as the owner of 200 acres out of the "William Kolb survey". I also believe William C. Kolb's biological father was another first cousin, Catherine's mother's brother's (Wilhelm Frederick Seelbach) son (Catherine's first cousin), John William Seelbach. William C. Kolb's father could also have been Catherine's mother's brother, but since his son was called William and he was closer to Catherine's age (he was born in 1859), he is a more likely candidate. The information that William's father was named William Seelbach comes from a personal interview, in March 1996 with Theodore Kolb (my aged and ill uncle) at the nursing home where Theodore resides in Nacogdoches. Although Theodore is quite elderly, has no teeth nor benefit of dentures, and suffers severe tremors (from Parkinson's disease), he displayed excellent memory and recall. He remembered details most people would not. In fact, he "told on" my Uncle Cleveland by giving Doris some nefarious details on Cleveland she had not previously known. He also remembered my sister and I as small children and to whom we belonged. He recalled a fatal traffic accident in 1935 of J.J. Bowdon, another relative in Nacogdoches. Theodore was very insistent about William's father being "Will Seelbach" and repeated several times "we're Seelbach s." Whenever he referred to his grandmother, he called her by maiden and married name, although he did not call her by her first given name, Catherine. He called her Elizabeth Kolb Bell. As told to me by Aunt Doris and Uncle Cleveland Kolb, in Nacogdoches, Catherine Elizabeth gave her illegitimate son, to a Kolb family and he took the Kolb name. Cleveland and Doris thought his father's last name was Hogue or possibly Hogan. William ran away from home "Charlie's" at a young age, but Charlie was the only father he ever knew. He had a difficult life and it was said he ran away from Charlie because of cruel treatment. Cleveland Kolb stated his father William Cleveland Kolb was a very cruel man and often beat them with stalks of cane till they bled. He described an incident where William's wife Lillie was ill after giving birth. He drove her to her relatives and left her lying on the side of the street, in the rain. William is found as an Orphan at the age of seventeen, living with Samuel Rider and Martha Ann (Hogan) Rider, on the 1900 census. Some Rider's immigrated from Germany along with the Kolbs, Seelbach s, Tubbes, and Helpenstells. Some others migrated to Texas from the eastern coast. ## CrossPoint v3.11 ##
