My name is Fern Paty May and I am researching the family of Ora Eleanor Coghill, my paternal grandmother, my direct ancestor to the Coghill family. She was born 10 Feb 1890 in Pawnee, KS to Amos Coghill & Apalena Briddle. I found her parents in Adair Co., MO in the 1880 census. It lists an Amos Coghill, wife Apalena and children John J, Jemima J, Daniel B and Thomas. For some reason, it did not list Virinda, Happy Ann and another brother, Charlie. I now have this family traced back to a James Coghill, born about 1758 in Culpeper Co., VA. He later moved to Kentucky and some of his descendants stayed in Kentucky and some moved on to Illinois, Kansas and Missouri.

I am also searching for information on the following surnames that are tied into the Coghill family - Briddle/Bridwell; Spicer; Stafford; Lucas; Wilhoit.

From an Abstract of a Revolutionary War Pension File: Coghill, James S35860, VA Line, soldier enlisted in Orange Cty, VA as a private in Feb. 1776 . Soldier applied 16 Nov 1819 Gallatin Cty KY aged 61, in 1823 sol had a son James aged 15.

James married Agnes WILHOITE, daughter of Michael WILHOITE and Mary SHIRLEY, before 1785. Agnes was born about 1765 in Culpepper Co., VA and died Aft Mar 1803 & bef 1805.
