This page is for researching the LeSure ancestors of Melvin May. Edward LeSure, the oldest we have found so far was first found in Worcester County, MA. Edwards grandson, Samuel LeSure, Jr. born 1802 in Grafton, Worcester Co., MA, later moved to Richland Co., IL and apparently that is where he died. The 1880 census stated that he was born in Mass, was 78 years old, a shoemaker, and his parents were born in Massachusetts. His wife was Elizabeth Rawlins, age 60 born in Illinois, and he had two sons living with him, William E., age 27, and Charles M, age 21.
Melvin's grandmother, Mabel Lillian LeSure was the daughter of William Edwin LeSure, born Sept. 8, 1853 in Olney, Illinois.
Mabel's mother was Lillie Delphine McKelvey, born July 13, 1864 in Indiana to Perry McKelvey and Margaret Jane Ricketts. Perry McKelvey was born Jan. 7, 1839 in Ohio and was married 3 times and had 5 children that I know of. The other children by his first wife Margaret were George Washington McKelvey, born Nov. 16, 1867; Mary Ann McKelvey, born Aug. 22, 1868. He then married Madeline Gentry and had another daughter, Lenora McKelvey, born April 27, 1872. Lenora married Charles Cropsey and had a daughter, Geraldine. Perry's third marriage was to Mary J. Allander and their only child was Florence Gracie McKelvey, born Jan. 14, 1880 in Noble, Illinois.

He had question marks by Samuel LeSure & Hannah Cummings first & last name as he isn't entirely sure if they are the parents of these three children.
Samuel married Hannah CUMMINGS on 17 Aug 1785 in Uxbridge, Worcester Co., MA. Hannah was born on 31 Dec 1763 in MA and died on 12 May 1854 in Whately, Franklin Co., MA, at age 90.

According to his grandson, Earl Yaw, he knew nothing of his life. His wife did not talk of him. He left her (at her request) and built a house on city property (with permission of City of Dallas on a 50 yr. lease). This was at the foot of 1st Viaduct between Dallas and Oak Cliff. He worked for the City of Dallas Weather Dept. He measured the depth of the Trinity River every day on his way to work. May Craighead Canida, a granddaughter, says he worked for a Dr. Cline who worked for the City of Dallas and was ran over by a car & killed as he was going to work. His wife received a pension from the city of Dallas after that. An article was found in the Dallas Morning News for Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1931. It said "River Gauger Dies of Auto Injuries" and goes on to tell the story.
William is in the 1880 census living with his parents in IL.

Marriage Notes: Married by S. T. Davis. There is also another record for a Charles M. LeSure and Anna McClarren marrying on 27 Dec 1880 in Richland Co., IL - Vol 002, Page 187, Lic 223. I don't know the reason for these two marriages unless they divorced and remarried or maybe the first one was in secret and married again later in the open.

12. Harriet A. HODNETT (Mary LESURE3, Samuel2, Edward1) was born on 8 Jul 1837 in Cooper, Washington Co., ME and died on 8 Nov 1931 in Danforth, Washington Co., ME, at age 94.
General Notes: The birth year of Harriet Hodnett is not consistent in various sources-lesure. US Census records indicate that she was born in 1837 (although this also varies in different years). Other records (History of Danforth, ME by Wilbur Love; also Harriet's death certificate) indicate she lived to be 100 and was born in 1831. Harriet's date of death has been confirmed per Maine death records.
I believe the US Census records to be more accurate and reliable for Harriet's birth date. This, coupled with consideration that Harriet's father Patrick did not arrive in the US until 1836 (per US naturalization records). It appears that he was married shortly after arrival in the US and Harriet was born in 1837. There is no evidence to support any suggestion that Harriet was not Patrick's daughter. The 1920 US Census for Danforth, Maine (date of census, January 19, 1920) lists Harriet as age 83 (meaning that she was born about 1837).
Harriet's death certificate indicates that Harriet lived in Danforth, ME since 1876. However, in History of Aroostook (Page 272) by Edward Wiggin, it indicates that Asa Russell (who was Harriet's husband at the time) moved to Danforth, ME in 1874. I believe that 1874 is a more reliable date for Harriet's move to Danforth.

General Notes: Henry was born on 10 October 1845 on his parent's farm in Aroostook County (Orient Plantation), Maine. The term plantation is similar to township. Orient is a small rural community and township located about eighty miles northeast of Bangor, Maine on the New Brunswick, Canada border. Orient was a remote wilderness in the 1840's and had been first settled by white people only fifteen years before Henry was born. The 1850 population of the 6,925 square miles of Aroostook County was 12,529. Henry was the fourth of eight children born to Patrick HODNETT and Mary LESURE. Patrick was an Irish immigrant who had moved to Orient from Washington County (Machias), Maine about 1840. He had arrived in the United States only a few years before that. Henry lived with his parents in the Town of Orient until the 1870's. Henry served as School Commissioner in the Town of Orient in 1871. He apparently performed some type of work or service for area residents, or perhaps lent them money, because two parcels of land in the Town of Weston, also in Aroostook County, were mortgaged to Henry in the early 1870's. The Town of Weston is on the south border of the Town of Orient. On 15 April 1872, Benjamin BUZZEL of Weston, Maine deeded ninety acres of land near the Orient/Weston town line to Henry. It was located on the east side of the Houlton/Baring road. The mortgage secured a one hundred dollar, twelve per cent promissory note dated 15 April 1872 and due in one year. Although not confirmed, the mortgage was apparently paid. Another parcel of land (twenty five acres) was secured by a mortgage to Martha J. Smith on 24 September 1874. The mortgage resulted from a promissory note in the amount of one hundred forty dollars from Martha J. SMITH to Henry HODNETT, dated 8 September 1874. The note was at ten per cent interest and was due in ten years. It is interesting to note that Henry C. HODNETT and Martha J. SMITH entered marriage intentions in the Town of Orient on 12 February 1875. On 18 February 1875, Henry recorded the mortgage with Martha J. SMITH as discharged. There is no further record and the marriage apparently never occurred. Henry moved to Wisconsin in the late 1870's and purchased one hundred forty acres of heavily wooded land on 15 September 1877 in Section 18 of what is now the Town of Longwood (the Town of Hixon at that time), Clark County, Wisconsin. The Town of Longwood is located southwest of the Village of Withee, a small rural community about fifty miles east of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Clark County, Wisconsin was mostly dense forest and inhabited mainly by Indians and pioneer lumbermen at the time that Henry settled in the area. The entire 1880 population of the 1,218 square miles of the County was 10,715, an increase of over 300% from only ten years earlier. It would be nearly twenty-five years before the county completed a transition from lumbering to agriculture. Clark County in the 1880's was one of the nations leading logging centers. The Wisconsin Central Railroad constructed a rail line through the area from Abbotsford, Wisconsin to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin in 1880. The rail line and the expansion of the John S. Owen Lumber Company into northern Clark County were major contributions to the settling and transformation of the county from lumbering to agriculture. The Village of Withee was established about that same time as a stop on the rail line. As was typical of many other early settlers in the area, Henry worked as a lumberjack in the winter months, and worked on developing his farm in the summer. Henry married Amanda Melvina DEERING in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on 20 June 1881, when he was thirty-five years old. Amanda was a daughter of Edwin DEERING and Susan COLLIER. She was a former neighbor of Henry's from Orient, Maine. Henry and Amanda was the parents of six children. All of the children were born in Henry and Amanda's farm home in what is now Section 18 of the Town of Longwood (the Town of Hixon at that time), Clark County, Wisconsin. Henry died at the age of fifty-six in the bedroom of his farm home on 10 March 1902 when he took an accidental overdose of medicine that had been prescribed to him to help cure a case of typhoid fever. He is buried next to his wife Amanda in the Sylvan Cemetery in the Town of Reseburg, Clark County, Wisconsin.

Earl M. & Mabel L. were also listed as living with their mother, which I think was correct. They probably stayed with their grandmother while their mother was at work or were just visiting.
In the late 1960's, Earl lived with his youngest sister, Mabel Sanders and her husband Claude, in east Dallas at 4527 Rusk St. After Mabel died, he went and lived with Mabel's daughter, Mabel Davis, in Richardson. He lived there until 1975 when he was put in a nursing home and died there later that same year.
Earl is buried in Section 8, NW 1/2 of lot 136, grave 5. Robert Nathan Clarke owned the grave site. (Possibly his wife's family?) It's at the back righthand side of Oakland Cemetery.

General Notes: Lynn was born on 19 November 1890 on his parent's farm in Section 18 of what is now the Town of Longwood (the Town of Hixon at that time), Clark County, Wisconsin. The Town of Longwood is located southwest of the Village of Withee, a small rural community located about fifty miles east of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Lynn was the fifth of six children born to Henry Clay HODNETT and Amanda Melvina DEERING. Lynn's father died on 10 March 1902, when Lynn was only twelve years old. Thereafter, he was raised on the farm by his mother. He received his education in the Town of Longwood at the "Poppe" school. One of Lynn's childhood activities was that of playing a drum in a local band. Lynn was twenty five years old when he married one of his neighbors, Esther Emma WOLTER in Owen, Wisconsin on 28 October 1916. Esther was a daughter of August Frederick WOLTER and Margaret FUCHS. After a honeymoon trip to Minneapolis, Minnesota, Lynn and Esther took up farming in the Town of Longwood. Lynn bought and sold several parcels of land in the Town of Longwood, but he lived most of his life in Section 18 on an eighty acre farm that he purchased on 22 November 1917. He owned and farmed an additional fifty acre farm in Section 8, from 24 November 1923, until he sold the property on 31 March 1948. Lynn expanded his home farm to one hundred sixty acres when he purchased an adjacent eighty acres on 6 January 1944. He was mainly a dairy farmer, although he raised peas (he called them gold nuggets) on occasion for the Owen (Wisconsin) Canning Company. In addition to farming, Lynn was a veteran worker of the northern Wisconsin lumber camps. His lumberjack jobs included taking horses further north during the winter months to work as a teamster near Park Falls, Wisconsin, skidding logs. A "Delco plant" electricity generator was installed on Lynn's farm in November, 1923, but his house had no indoor plumbing or indoor bathrooms. The house furnace and cookstove were fueled by wood. Lynn was forty five years old when his wife Esther died from blood poisoning, in the Chippewa Falls (Wisconsin) Hospital on 8 April 1936. His oldest child was eighteen years old, and his youngest child was only nine months at the time. Lynn continued to farm after Esther's death and he raised his family alone, without a mother. Lynn retired from farming at the age of sixty four in 1954. His son Henry (with assistance from his brother Harold) took over Lynn's farm, and Lynn moved from the main farm house to a small, two story building (a former grain storage building) that had been converted to living quarters. The house was very basic, and Lynn preferred to live without the conveniences of indoor plumbing or an indoor bathroom. He lived a lifestyle similar to that known during his early farming days. Lynn married Eva Madalena KAVINA in Clark County (Neillsville), Wisconsin on 26 June 1958. Eva and her former husband, Wenzel Otto KAVINA, were World War II refugees from Europe, that Lynn had hired to work on his farm in May, 1952. His marriage to Eva was short lived and they were divorced in Clark County (Neillsville), Wisconsin on 19 February 1959. Although denied by Lynn, Eva claimed that he was the father of her son Arthur Lynn KAVINA, who was born in Manitowoc County (Manitowoc), Wisconsin on 18 June 1955. The Clark County Circuit Court ruled, during Lynn and Eva's divorce hearing in February, 1959, that Lynn was the father of Arthur. Lynn spent his retirement days helping his sons, Henry and Harold, farm. He also spent time with his hobbies of gardening, hunting, fishing, cooking and berry picking. In June 1959, he traveled with his son Harold and family, to California and a tour of other western states. Lynn suffered a stroke that paralyzed his left side on November 26, 1960. He moved in with his son Henry, after a stay in Victory Memorial Hospital in Stanley, Wisconsin. One of Lynn's favorite foods was oysters. He liked to eat oyster stew on his birthday. He enjoyed cooking maple syrup in the spring. Lynn spent the final months of his life living with his daughter, Fern, who lived on a farm in Section 33 in the Town of Thorp, Clark County, Wisconsin. He died at the age of seventy four, on 4 March 1965, at the Victory Memorial Hospital, in Stanley, Wisconsin. The cause of death was kidney failure. Based upon a reference to Hazel Cazes found in the "Hart Crane Manuscripts", Hazel was living in Mexico on June 2, 1931. She was also apparently a close friend of the poet, Hart Crane.

Based upon Carey's newspaper obituary in 1975, published in the Sacramento Union newspaper, he moved to Sacramento in 1924 (presumably from University City, Iowa - ALH).

Earl Monroe Yaw, 82, of Edmond, went to be with our Lord on November 19, 1998. He was born in Dallas, Texas, on April 14, 1916 to George and Mabel Yaw. He was a member of Waterloo Road Baptist church which he enjoyed attending very much. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Park Place Lodge No. 1172 in Houston, Texas, as well as being a member of the Shrine Temple in Oklahoma City. Earl spent his working career as a diesel engine mechanic and at one time owned his own business, Industrial Motor Service in El Campo, Texas. He retired from Stewart & Stevenson Services, Houston, Texas, in 1981 and moved to Edmond, Oklahoma to be near his family in 1984. He served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. Earl will be remembered as an honest, thoughtful, considerate, devoted and loving man who always had a humorous life story to share. He enjoyed his life to the fullest, and loved to work, golf, bowl, fish, hunt, and help others. In later years, his njoyment came from attending church, reading, and managing his and Vesper's investments. Earl is survived by his wife of 60 years, Vesper of the home, his two sons, Elliott E. Yaw and wife Peggy; Donald D. Yaw and wife Ann, all of Edmond; his grandchildren David C. Yaw, Edmond; Guy E. Yaw, Oklohama City; Valerie A. Girod, Phoenix, AZ; Dane E. Yaw, Norman; Jason D. Yaw, Edmond; Tammy L. Wentzel, Edmond; and his great grandchildren, Alix, Angel, Blake, Christian, Devin, and Paiton. Services will be held on Saturday, November 21, 1998 at 1:00 pm, in the chapel at Hahn-Cook/Street and Draper. Burial will be at Gracelawn Cemetery, Danforth and Broadway, Edmond, following the service.
