Information on
obtaining Copies
This map identifies "names of owners and/or tenants, houses of subscribers and names of estates." It uses small black squares to indicate structures such as residences, inns, schools, churches, and factories. Some drawings of houses and other buildings border the map. There is also a list of the names, professions and residences of subscribers to the map. George Tremaine compiled maps of most of the counties of southern Ontario in the 1850s and 1860s. Many original copies of the huge wall maps still exists. Smaller versions of these maps have been printed by many organizations.
The Index was created from the 1858 Map created for Brant County.
It should be noted that Tremaine had to fit the name in the space provided by the lot owned or rented, and as such it was often necessary to abbreviate the first name to fit the space. There therefore, may be a duplication of person as shown in this example
Smith, A 3RE
, Alex 1RS
, Alexander 1RS
This may represent three different people or it may be just one person.
The map does not give a clear indication of identity.
The modern map of Brant County has also changed many times in the interval, and the Index may prove to be of limited value if using the location as a guide to search Census records for that area
