Extract from White's Leicester and Rutland Directory 1877

HOLWELL is a small village, township, and chapelry. in Ab-Kettleby parish, picturesquely situated on a southern declivity, 31/2 miles N. by W. of Melton Mowbray: it has 1225 acres, had 147 inhabitants in 1871, and has a rateable value of £1545 11s. 8d. The Earl of Dysart is lord of the manor, but most of the soil, of which about half is arable, belongs to J. and G. Crompton, Esqrs., and T. R. D. Bingham and H. V. Flower, Esqrs., and the Holwell Iron Co. The CHAPEL, which is annexed to Ab-Kettleby vicarage, is a small antique fabric, with a bell turret, and will accommodate 100 worshippers. A WESLEYAN CHAPEL was erected in 1818; and here is a chalybeate spring, called Holwell Mouth. Besides about 22s. per annum from charities noticed with Ab-Kettleby the poor have the following yearly doles-20s. from lA. 1R. 8P., called 'The Poor's Close,' and 13s. 4d. from £20 left by Mary Briggs, in 1771, and now in the Savings' Bank. John Hurst and son charged the Sandpit Close with the yearly payment of 10s. for a distribution of pious books, and 20s. for apprenticing poor children of Holwell. This close now belongs to J. and G. Crompton, Esqrs. On August 5, 1864, while some men were levelling a stackyard on the property of H. V. Flower, Esq., they found a quantity of silver coins of the time of Henry VI., which weighed 5 lbs. Large quantities of iron ore have been found on the estate of the Holwell Iron Co., who have laid a tramway, which runs into the Midland Railway near the Asfordby tunnel.
