Richard Byres Harkness (son of Edward Harkness and Margaret Byres)was born in 1840, and died February 22, 1887 in Quyon, Quebec, Canada(source: The Renfrew Mercury, Friday, February 25, 1887 and Friday, March 4, 1887).
When the 1881 Canadian Census was taken; Richard was a 40 year old farmer in Shawville and Clarendon South, Pontiac, Quebec . He is listed as "Richerd Herkness"; his wife is "Jenit" age 21; his daughter is "Christina" age 3; and his son is "John" age less than 1, born: Oct; 7/12. It is also noted that they were all of Scottish ethnic origin, Presbyterians, and born in Quebec, Canada.
In Richard's case, this conflicts with data found describing him as being born and baptized in January 1840 in Half Morton, Dumfries, Scotland (registered as 'Byres Harkness' in the O.P.R.s). However, the registrar goes on to explain that Edward 'has since gone to America'.
According to the IGI's, Richard was christened March 29, 1840 in Nelsfield-Gretna, Dumfries, Scotland.
Richard married Janet Murray McIntosh, October 25, 1877 in Canada, daughter of John McIntosh and Christena McKensey Moyse.

iv. Margaret Byres Harkness, born December 11, 1882, Braeside, Ontario, Canada; and died August 02, 1973, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; married John Henry Lawlor, on June 29, 1921, in Metcalfe, Ontario, Canada.
v. Ellen Harkness, born March 30, 1885 in Canada; and died 1956 in Arnprior, Ontario, Canada; married William McKay Fraser, September 08, 1909, in Arnprior, Ontario, Canada.
vi. Elizabeth Harkness, born June 10, 1887, Norway Bay, Quebec, Canada; and died November 30, 1964, Campbell's Bay, Quebec, Canada; married Michael William Lamothe, November 06, 1912, in Arnprior, Ontario, Canada
