p.6, THE GLEANER, Ancestor Exchange

A record of the Stevens family of Orange County, put together largely in the last couple of years by Mrs. Earle B. Predmore, Sr. (Helen Roe) of Sugar Loaf, still lacks much to make it complete and correct.  Nevertheless, it crosses so many other Orange County family lines, some of them well documented and some of them not, that Mrs. Predmore has prepared it for publication in the hope that it may be mutually helpful to herself and others.  It well be published in this column as space permits.

Mrs. Predmore writes: "I have only three lines from the third generation, when I should have ten.  I want especially to find the connection with the Rakes, and with the Stevenses around Highland Mills and Harriman.  All my inquiries so far have been fruitless.  I've been told that Moses Stevens of the Rake line was a son of Elisha.  But neither Elisha Stevens junior or senior had a son so named, unless one was nicknamed Mose.  But that's just a guess.  In the record I have many names for which there is no data.  I hope someone can and will supply some facts.  One line, which I have given as it was given to me, seems doubtful.  I shall be grateful for comment, additions or corrections on any of the lines."

The record compiled by Mrs. Predmore and somewhat briefed for these columns follows.

Early in the 18th Century three Stevens brothers came from England to the colonies.  David settled in Connecticut, William at Hoboken, where his descendants later founded Stevens Institute of Technology, and Jonathan, who came to Orange Co.

Jonathan Stevens took up land near Long Pond, now Walton Lake, in Sugar Loaf Valley, then in the Precinct of New Cornwall.  His homesite was on one of the most important Indian trails in that part of the country, part of what is now mapped from Maine to Georgia as the Appalachian Trail.  Jonathan probably trekked inland from Hudson's River over that trail, which for the most part follows the crests of the uplands.

Without doubt Jonathan's first house on the property was a crude log hut at the base of the most northern elevation of the range, now called the Greenwood Lake-Bellvale mountains.  It looked southerly into a narrow valley, the region later known as Salem, which merged into Dutch Hollow, beyond which was the Mombasha elevation.  There is nothing in the public records about Jonathan's purchase, but that is not extraordinary.

An old writing whose author is unknown states that in 1789 John Stevens, James Parker and Walter Rutherford obtained a grant of 5,000 acres in the Ramapo Patent, made up of many patents and located in many places.  If the three owners shared equally, then Jonathan Stevens had about 1,600 acres.  His tract is said to have extended from Long Pond to the village of Sugar Loaf; and elsewhere it is said that it lay from Long Pond to Perry's Pond, now Wickham Lake.  However, the Sugar Loaf village referred to probably was an Indian settlement on the south side of Sugar Loaf Mountain near the burying ground for Indian sagamores or sachems on the farm now owned by Joseph Nozskiwski.  When Charles Clinton surveyed the Cheesecocks Patent soon after 1739 he noted in his Field Book, which is deposited in the County Clerk's files, that he lodged in Wigwams near Sugar Loaf, that there was a road from Goshen to Stirling, and that he crossed a branch of the Dutch Hollow Brook by the Indian settlement at Sugar Loaf Mountain.  The road mentioned was an Indian trail which can still be traced from Route 17, near Chester, over the southerly end of Goosepond Mountain into Sugar Loaf Valley, thence through Dutch Hollow to Greenwood Lake.

It is probable that Jonathan Stevens came to Salem much earlier that 1789; perhaps he had been there a generation by the time the land purchase was completed.  In 1775 Jonathan Stevens signed for the committee for Observation and Safety in Cornwall Precinct.  His four oldest sons, all of whom were 18 years or older, were signers under date of September 14, 1775.  That same year he was pathmaster for District 30 of Cornwall Precinct.  These records are cited in the History of Orange County by Ruttenber and Clark.  Jonathan's will was dated December 12, 1794.  It names as heirs his wife Jemina; his sons, Joseph, David, Jonathan, Elisha, Adam and Justus; and his daughters, Dorothy, Rebeckah, Mary and Amey, wife of William Friskey or Triskey.  The executors were Patrick Cassidy and the son Elisha.  Witnesses were Jonathan Hallock, John McChelsey (?) and Elizabeth Hallock.  The will was probated January 14, 1795.

What was the maiden name of Jonathan's wife Jemina?  Who did Joseph, their first child, marry?

I want any data on the following children of Jonathan and Jemima: Joseph, Adam, Justus, Dorothy, Rebeckah, Marey and Amey.

Of the second generation of the family in Orange County, the children of Jonathan Stevens, Sr., I have the following:

1. Joseph Stevens, son of Jonathan Sr. was a large and powerful man.  He signed the pledge of the Committee for Observation and Safety in Cornwall Precinct under date of Sept. 14, 1775.  He is said to have married but had no children.

2. David Stevens, son of Jonathan Sr. born February 15, 1755, died August 19, 1845; married Eleanor Fulton, born September 9, 1761, died August 12, 1838.  David and Eleanor were buried on the ancestral land at Salem.  Their headstones were moved to the farm now owned by Norbert Wanner, a former Stevens property.  Their children:  Jeremiah; Jedediah, born April 1, 1784, died January 6, 1841; Joseph, born January 26, 1792, died March 3, 1865; Henry W., born September 30, 1798, died August 2, 1870, William Fletcher, born October 9, 1800, died May 7, 1880; George; Betsey (Elizabeth?).

Who was Eleanor Fulton? Many of her descendants claim relationship to Robert Fulton of steamboat fame.  Is there proof?

3.  Jonathan Jr., born 1757, died November 16, 1838; married Mary.  Their children:  Rubin, born about 1791; David, born March 31, 1793, died about 1880; Jonathan 3rd, born 1795; John, born July 24, 1797, died April 22, 1868; Samuel, born about 1799; Daniel, born 1801, died 1869; Abraham, born 1804; Anne, born 1806.

Deaths recorded in the Bible of Jonathan Stevens Jr.: Jonathan Stevens, Nov.. 16th; Mary Stevens, May 19th; Jonathan Stevens, Ju.; Samuel Stevens, Abraham Stevens. (Since Jonathan Jr. made his will July 14, 1838, and it was probated March 11, 1839, the Nov. 16th must refer to 1838.  His wife Mary must have died earlier because she was not mentioned in his will.  The three boys probably died in childhood.)

In his will, Jonathan Stevens, Jr. left two-thirds of all his personal property to his son John, the other third to his daughter Anne. John was to pay off all debts against his father or the estate and was to receive all monies owing to the father, and he was to pay his brother Daniel $180 and interest within four years of the father's death. Anne was to pay her brother Daniel $100 and interest in the same period.  There was no mention of real estate.  James Gray and James Cromull (Cromwell) of the Town of Monroe were designated executors.  John McGarrah of Monroe was the only witness.

About 1805 Jonathan Stevens built a house to replace the cabin he had occupied.  It was about half a mile east of the house of Jonathan Sr.  Between the house and the road which passed nearby Jonathan Jr. built a high stone retaining wall shaped like the letter S, with stone steps at the exact center.  Both house and wall still serve their purpose in the ownership of Norbert Wanner family, who purchased the property soon after the death of Seely Stevens, grandson of Jonathan Jr.

4. Elisha Stevens, son of Jonathan Sr., born February 28, 1759; died December 22, 1814; married Rachel DeMott, born December 8, 1772, died November 1847, daughter of Catherine Westlake, born 1757.  Their children:  Joel, William, Finley, born October 24, 1799, died June 23, 1851; Benjamin; Ellis, George Westlake; Issac; Jacob; Elisha, Jr., born February 1, 1812, died April 20 1884; Polly Ann; Sarah; Catherine; Matilda*.  Elisha Stevens was buried just north of his home.

5.  Adam Stevens, son of Jonathan Sr. No record.

6.  Justus Stevens, son of Jonathan Sr., signed the pledge of the Committee of Observation and Safety in Cornwall Precinct, Sept. 14, 1775.

7.  Dorothy Stevens, daughter of Jonathan Sr.  No record.

8.  Rebeckah Stevens, daughter of Jonathan Sr.  No record.

9.  Marey Stevens, daughter of Jonathan, Sr.  No record.

10.  Amey Stevens, daughter of Jonathan Sr., married William Friskey (?). No further record.

Who was Moses Stevens, born 1800, died 1880?  He married Charlotte Coleman, born 1805, died 1875.  They had Lydia Stevens who married George Rake.  Their children were John and William and Sarah Lib Rake Gibbons.

Would appreciate any additions or corrections or any facts or anecdotes about any member of the Stevens family.  HRP

The third generation in Orange County so far as my notes go:

Jeremiah Stevens, son of David, married Nancy, born Sept. 11 1795, died March 17, 1833.  A headstone in a private burial plot on the farm of Charles Hinkernell in the Town of Chester marks the grave of "Nancy, wife of Jeremiah Stevens."  It seems probable that Jeremiah was buried beside her and that his stone has been lost, as all the stones are broken and scattered.

Jedediah Stevens, son of David, born April 1, 1784, died January  6, 1841, married May 30, 1818 Elizabeth Benedict, born May 9 1789, died April 16, 1867.  Their children:  James B., born March 6 , 1819, died December 4, 1903; David W., born January 13, 1821, died March 9, 1890; Sarah Ann, born December 6, 1825, died Sept. 30, 1912; Abner W., born Feb. 11, 1828, died May 19,  1903.
