Frederick-Stevens-Conklin Bible Record
I found an old family Bible of the FREDERICK and CONKLIN families who used to live in Orange County in the late 1700's and early to mid 1800's...The old record is of Jacob Frederick who was born March 16, 1791 and Catherine Stevens who was born Aug 7, 1792. The Bible is mainly about their son Albert B Frederick who was born Sept 8, 1812 in Orange County and married Martha Conklin  who was born July 8 1819. They were married Oct 23, 1839 in Orange county and had six children 5 of whom were born in Orange County. (Greenwood Twp). Albert B Frederick is shown in the 1850 NY Census index living at Chester NY. In 1857 the family moved to wright Co. MN. The six children were: Sylvester C Frederick, b. 6 Oct 1840 NY;Willaim H Frederick b 7 Dec 1843 NY; Charles D Frederick b. 13 Oct 1846, NY; George T Frederick b 25 Mar 1850, NY; Catherine L Frederick b 27 Apr 1852, NY;  Albert Franklin Frederick, b 17 Nov 1863, MN...I...am related to a granddaughter (by marriage) of child Catherine L Frederick Northrup. This grandmother found this Bible discarded in a rainbarrell! The Bible was water damaged but all the record pages were safe and legible. Funeral of Mrs Ann Ferrell - Holdingford Advisor, Apr 10, 1914
"The funeral of the late Mrs Ann Ferrell, who died on Saturday at Holdingford, was held in Little fall Monday afternoon, interment being made in the Oakland Cemetery with others of the pioneer settlers.
Mrs Ferrell was born in New York State 94 years ago this month and came to Minnesota in 1854 making her home at Cokato Lake. During the famous Indian outbreak of 1863 she with her family was driven from the homestead by the advance of the Indians. At the time of the uprising the settlers marched to the blockhouse to battle with the Indians and Mrs Ferrell along with her daughters donned men's clothing and shouldered muskets on the march to make the Indians believe that there were more men in the company and in that way prevent attack. Deceased lived in Morrison county for several years and then moved to Holdingford in 1883 where she has remained for the past 30 years- St. Cloud. Journal, Press.

St Paul was a mere village at that early day and the pioneers were obliged to undergo many hardships and disadvantages...The father was an active and prominent man of his day. Shortly after the war broke out he enlisted and went into the Union army, serving from 1862-1864, when he was honorably discharged. He is still living, being now blind, and makes his home with his son, George. Jane Rake was born about 1824 in England. She died 19 Jun 1855 in Shakopee, Scott Co., MN. Jane married Francis Wagner Frederick on 4 Mar 1846 in Red SugarLoaf Church, Sugar Loaf, New York, USA.

SOURCE: Bill:
Jane Rake's parents were John Rake and Mary Ann Brooks who immigrated from
England.  John Rake was born circa 1801 in England and died 7 August 1861 in
Monroe, NY (from CW pension records of son, William).  Mary Ann was born 25
Jul 1804 in England and died 7 Jan 1883, Turners, NY.  She was buried 9 Jan
1883 at the Cemetery of the Highlands, Highland Mills, NY (according to
death certificate).  I believe that the family immigrated to the US in 1829,
probably during the 3 months for which passenger records are missing for NY
(figures, right?).  Their children were:

1. Jane, born circa 1826.  I have a Jane Rake born in 1826 in Marnhull,
Dorset, England to a John and Mary Ann Rake, but no record of a son George,
and no further corroborating evidence.  May be the right family, or may not
be.  But its a hint to follow up on.

2. George, born circa 1828, England.  Died after 1900 probably in Monroe,
NY.  I am trying to run down the death as this may help locate the family in
England.  Married Lydia Stevens before 1860.

3. Joseph born 27 Dec 1830, Monroe, NY, died 19 Apr 1916 and buried Cemetery
of the Highlands.  Married Hannah C. Case on 23 Dec 1856.

4. Edmund born Mar 1835, Monroe, NY, died 1917 and buried Monroe Community
Cemetery, Monroe, NY.  Married Harriet E. Stevens circa 1857.

5. Rachel born circa 1837, Monroe, NY.  Married Josiah Bull.

6. Elizabeth born Apr 1839, Monroe, NY, died 1927, and buried Monroe
Community Cemetery, Monroe, NY.  Married John Ewerz circa 1863.

7. William born circa 1843, Monroe, NY, died 3 May 1863 in the Battle of
Chancellorsville fighting with the 124th NY Vol Infantry, the famous Orange
Blossoms. His pension papers (mother Mary applied for a mother's pension)

"UNIQUE CHRISTMAS OFFERING: Mrs Harriet Cooper was the recipient through the mail Christmas Eve of an unique Christmas gift labelled "A Box of Christmas Wishes" This particular box contained an original wish from each of Mrs Cooper's fourteen grandchildren living in British Columbia, Colorado, North Dakota and Minnesota. Within the box was a package wrapped in fifteen wrappers and between each was the wish of a grandchild. After unwrapping and reading each of the fourteen wished (a most strenuous but pleasant task, the lady said) she came to the real article, a beautiful emerald ring to which was attached an appropriate poem. Mrs Cooper's birthday is in May, hence the emerald was selected as the setting for the ring (NOTE: the fourteen grandchildren must have been From the Charles Cooper Family- Carrie, Fred, Edna Jane, Bernice, Rueben. Samuel Smith [Parents] 1 was born about 1755 in Smith's Clove, Orange Co, NY. He died 21 Jul 1836 in Monroe, Orange County, NY, USA. Samuel married Mary Mapes on 1791.

Other marriages:
Unknown, X

Very little is known about Samuel. He is referred to in David Smith's will as "Samuel Smith son of Claudius". Family tradition has always claimed that Samuel was son of Claudius. Since few folk seem willing to claim a relationship with Claudius, and Samuel, in spite of the fact that he was on opposite sides of the Revolution did, and he is mentioned thusly in David's will,  I assume this claim to be true. The following is the best information I have found on Samuel.(my exceptions are noted)

SOURCE: Meta Smith Bush, "Smith and Allied Families"
Samuel Smith, Son of Claudius, is a person comparatively unknown...The date of his birth is not known...in the 1790 Census Samuel's family consisted of two males over 16, three males under 16, and three females. That would mean that Samuel and his wife had one son over 16, three under sixteen and two daughters. This would mean that he was married by 1773 at the latest. At the Cornwall town meeting of 1775, he was named "keeper of the path for district 22", all proving that he was head of his own household before the Revolution.  This would indicate that he was the oldest son of Claudius (I disagree on this point. According to a newspaper account found in both the Eager and Ruttenber and Clark Histories as taken from the Fishkill Packet, William was the eldest of Claudius' sons. Eager's History of Orange County, p 563: '...all accounts agree that William, the oldest, was shot in the mountains in the fall of 1778, by whig scouts sent in pursuit of the gang." Lil).
It is believed that Samuel married Mary Mapes who was the widow of Joshua Broffit. She was the daughter of Henry Mapes, born 1737 and his wife Ruth Rumsey. (I have no proof beyond birth dates of Smith and Broffit children but I am of the opinion that Samuel was married prior to his marriage with Mary Mapes. The will of Henry Mapes made Oct 20, 1812 indicates that Hezekiah Broffit was underage." Imprimis I give and bequeath to my grandson Hezekiah Braffit the sum of twenty dollars to be paid to him when he shall arrive to the age of twenty one years together with the Interest that may arise thereon which sum of Twenty dollars I direct my son David Mapes to put out at Interest to the best advantage for the use and at the risque of the said Hezekiah," This indicates that said Hezekiah was born not earlier than 1791.(1812- 21). We know that Eleanor Holbert, daughter of Samuel was born 1 June, 1777, and that
James was born circa 1780 and David circa 1781. Their mother could not have been Mary Mapes. It seems logical to assume that both Samuel and Mary had previous marriages and that they married fairly quickly after the death of Joshua Broffit as they had son Moses circa 1792. - Lil)
Samuel belonged to the 4th Regiment of Orange county Militia under Col William Allison. He signed the Articles of Association at Cornwall in 1775. He also appears under Land Bounty Rights, 3rd regiment of Orange County Militia. (His services have been verified by the DAR). He must have had strong convictions to fight for independence in view of the fact that his father and brothers were Tory.
He probably lived on or near district 22 before the Revolution, but on Dec 27, 1805, he bought 295 acres of mountain Lot 13 of the Cheesecock Patent. From this tract he later sold off two parcels and farmed the rest. He was in possession of this land at the time of his death. The farm - known locally as the Albert Nadges place- was high on the ridge at the left of the present road from Walton Lake to Greenwood Lake. At that time, the road was the main road from Goshen to New York, passing through the Ramapos. It was in that mountainous country that Claudius' band had its hiding places.
He was a blacksmith by trade and had his forge at the farm. At that time the blacksmith was an indispensable person in the community for all iron ware was hand forged. Samuel not only shod horses and oxen there, but he turned out farming tools - plough points for the wooden plows, hoes, axes, nails, as well as household utensils. He took part in the political life being named assessor in 1798. Samuel died in 1836, for his will filed at Goshen was made July 25, 1836 and probated Oct 22 of the same year.
SOURCE: a history of the Smith family received from Terry Hurd. Author unknown.
Claudius' son Samuel was, probably, ( other sources - Eager and Ruttenber and Clark, seem to indicate that William was the eldest) the first born of his 4 sons for he was old enough in 1775 to be appointed pathmaster of District 22 which was one of the lots laid out in Charles Clinton's survey and was located on or near what is now the road between the present villages of Monroe and Greenwood Lake, probably near Dutch Hollow.  He was a Whig, thus differing from his Tory father and 3 brothers.  Samuel signed the articles of Association in Cornwall in 1775 and appeared as a militia man in the 41 regiment of Orange County Militia under Col. John Hawthorne.  He is listed for land bounty rights as a member of the 3rd regiment of Orange County Militia.

They lived south of Walton Lake, Monroe, NY.

SOURCE: On a database of Gilead Presbyterian Church 1757-1857, Carmel, Putnam Co NY found a birth for Samuel Smith b Aug 1757 to David Smith and wife Not likely mine. Our David was definitely in OC by this date.

Mary Mapes [Parents] 1 was born 13 Jun 1757 in Monroe, Orange Co. NY. She died before 1830 in Monroe, Orange Co, NY, USA. Mary married Samuel Smith on 1791.

Other marriages:
Braffit, Joshua

In her father Henry Mapes Will ( dated 1812) , Hezekiah Braffit, her son by her first marriage,  is to receive his inheritance when he comes of age. That suggests to me that he was born no earlier than 1791 (1812-21=1791). From this it is logical to assume that Mary Mapes was still married to Braffit as late as 1790. Therefore, she probably was a second wife to Samuel Smith (who has at least three children known to be born before 1790  -ie. Eleanor born 1777) They probably married Circa 1791 as Moses Smith (known to be a son of Mary Mapes Smith was born 1792.
Since Mary was not mentioned in the will of Samuel Smith (which was long and precise)  it is probable that she was deceased before 1830 when the will was first written. Nor is she mentioned by name in her father's will written 1812 - Nor are any of her children by Smith mentioned. It appears that the elder Mapes was not at all pleased with his daughter marrying into this family - even if Samuel himself was a Patriot. However it is also possible that Mary and Samuel already had received something from the Mapes at the time of their marriage although I have never found any legal record of Land etc changing hands.
