File: DAVID-hist05.TXT 20000314 --- Extract from "Gonzales County, Texas History book" by Rebecca Elizabeth Howell DAVID, CAROLINE PATTERSON Caroline "Carrie" Patterson David was born in Fayette County, TN 3Jul1834. First child of William David & Elizabeth Christian Clark whose 1833 marriage merged two lines of Welsh and English heritage with Scotch-Irish line of William's mother Annie Means. A letter written by Elizabeth Clark David to either Robert Amos David or Leslie Price David, her two youngest children, dated Belmont, Texas 6Aug1892 told the sad tale of William Lewis David. (20Sep1836-26Aug1862) & John Henry David (31Jul1839-27Feb1862), her 2nd & 3rd children. The letter told that the 2 young men volunteered to ride with Sibley's Brigade in the Civil War. In Jul1861 they left home with many other young men from Columbus, Texas. John was mortally wounded in the battle of Val Verde 21Feb1862 & died 6-days later despite the care that William could provide. William was taken prisoner after John's death & imprisoned at Fort Union. After his release, he walked "down to Alpasso" (sic) where he contracted measles & nearly died. Surviving that, he arrived home with the help of one Captain Nixon. On his return he contracted typhoid "from the army" in "San Antonio" (sic) & died 12-days after reaching home. Carries youngest brother Leslie Price was born 3Mar1861. He was the 9h & last child of Elizabeth & William who moved to Texas in 1837 & settled in Colorado County near Columbus. Their children were the 6th generation born after Thomas David emigrated from Wales in 1725 or 1726. Carrie & first husband William Malachi Fly taught school in Gonzales County in 1864. In 1865 after the close of the war they moved back to Colorado County where Mr. Fly soon died. On Christmas Day 1871 Carrie married William Henry Jones of Bastrop. Mr. Jones was a widower with 2 little daughters, Eliza Hardeman Jones & Rachael Burleson Jones (see Towns, A.D.). Their mother Sarah Eliza Hardeman Jones (17Mar1842-15Mar1865) was a granddaughter of Sarah Seeley and Empresario Green DeWitt (see DeWitt, G.) and the daughter of Eliza DeWitt Hamilton Davis (17Sep1809-8Sep1863) & Thomas Jones Hardeman (31Jan1788-11Jan1865). Thomas Hardeman's great-great-grandfather also emigrated from Wales in 1705. Eliza hardeman Jones (25Feb1864 Bastrop County-23Feb1934 Gonzales County) married Leslie Price David, Carrie's brother, 2Oct1883 in Gonzales County. Eliza & Leslie had 4 daughters: Sarah Leola (10Oct1884); Pearl Elizabeth (19Apr1886- 27May1936); Merl Eliza (13Mar1899-1Sep1977); & Leslie Fay (26Dec1900). Pearl married Horace James Howell (29Jan1886-13Dec1952) 4Jun1912 in Belmont (see Howell, J.M.). They had 2 sons: Horace James Jr. (16Nov1918) & David Ray (26Sep1926-1Oct1972). Jim Howell had 5 children: Barbara K., Horace James III, John Wesley, Judith Ann and Jo Ellen. David Ray Howell married Glenna Ruth Walters (see Walters, A.S.) in Gonzales 18Jun1949. They had 3 daughters: Rebecca Elizabeth (23May1952); Lisa Ruth Berger (16Apr1954) married Jeffrey Daniel Elkin (15Jul1958) & had one son Josuha Daniel (31May1982).// --- /1988-ARTICLE FROM "THE COVINGTON LEADER" NEWSPAPER DATED: 16-Nov-1988, BY: DR. VIRGINIA LEE JOHNSON. More than 150 years ago, 3 brothers of the David family chose to remain in Tipton County to live and raise families. Originally, 7 brothers and several sisters with their family had settled in area about 7-miles north of the city in a community called Leigh's Chapel, along with members of the Proctor family. All had traveled from NC to East TN before settling in Tipton County in West TN. Several of the David men and women along with members of the Proctor family traveled into AR, where some of the descendants still live. The 3 David brothers who remained in the community were William Alexander, Amos, and Walter David. A Methodist Church to be named Leigh's Chapel was formed, a cemetery established adjacent as well as a 1-room school house. Although rebuilt in the 40s, the Methodist Church is still there. Its minister serves 2 other United Methodist Churches in the County at Pisgah and at Hyde Park, but resides in a parsonage at Leigh's Chapel. The school house evolved into a 2- room building. It became a community house for various activities, when the county schools consolidated. It is in the Leigh's Chapel Community House that on the 3rd Sunday in October for the last decade descendants of those David brothers gather to remember their heritage, examine once again their roots, walk through the cemetery, attend church, if possible, but always meet & greet kinfolks, to eat & fellowship together. The night before there is barbecuing over an open fire on the grounds. It is now done mainly by Johnny Elam, a 4th-generation son, who is known for his expertise in the art of barbecuing. He is assisted by his cousin, Allan Walton, also a 4th generation family member, under the watchful eye of Johnny's uncle, David Bowden. David Boden still lives in the Community & insures remember- ance of the Clan & it's traditions. Space will not permit the names of all 80 plus people who attended the 1988 Reunion in mid-October, but some will be using the chronological-age order of the 3 David brothers. Their own offspring have all died. William Alexander David, the elder of the 3 who lived in Leigh's Chapel community, married Elizabeth Virginia Proctor. After a short interval in AR, they returned to Leigh's Chapel to live and raise their family. They were the parents of 5 daughters & 1-son, all born in TN who lived to adulthood. Only the older daughter, Sophia Elizabeth David, left Tipton County to work in Memphis. There she married William Lucious Johnson. At the David gathering this year, they were represented by Mrs. Billie Johnson (West Memphis, AR), the widow of Ernest David Johnson; William B Johnson & wife, Norma, (Memphis) along with his two sons, Forbes and wife Bonnie (Hernando, MS) & his daughter Mary Carole Johnson (Memphis) & Larry Johnson & Linda (Hernando, MS), Virginia Lee Johnson (Memphis) was also present. Another daughter of WA Davids, Fannie David, married Aubrey Parr & lived in the Garland neighborhood. This year only their older daughter, Louise Parr Leach, attended with her son, Barry, his wife, daughter, son & guest, all of the Garland community. The youngest daughter of the W.A. Davids, Annie married Leslie Fortner & lived in the Oak Grove neighborhood. They were represented by their son, Herman, wife, Christine (Oak Grove) & several other family members. The only son of the WA David family to live to adulthood was Willie Taylor who married Maude Johnson. For several years they lived in Leigh's Chapel neighborhood before moving to the Hyde Park community. They were represented by sons Alfred & wife Mildred from Trenton; Willie T Jr (Arlington) with daughter & her husband Robert Lawson, (Munford) & his mother. Eura Love David Smith (Hyde Park) with several family members have been present at all the reunions. Amos David married Sally Rice & lived in Leigh's Chapel community some years before moving to Covington. They had 4 daughters who grew into adulthood, all marrying and living in Tipton County. The oldest daughter, Dora May, married Emory Bradley, who lived in the county before moving to Covington. Their family was represented by Nannie Bradley & Edna Bradley (Both of Millington). The Bradleys' son, the late JQ Bradley, was represented by Dr. & Mrs. Claude Lane (Theresa Bradley) who attended with their 2 small children. They reside in Jackson, Tennessee. The Amos Davids had twin daughters, Earl & Pearl. Earl married Lon Bowden. She spent her entire life in the Leigh's Chapel neighborhood & was the last of her generation of Davids to die (1986). Her son, David Bowden, & his wife live in the community. David Bowden is the one who "keeps the David family reunion a going," by making sure it is held each year. Her grandson, son of the late Kathrine Bowden Elan, Johnny Elam, is the one who takes over on barbecuing the night prior to the Reunion. Johnny is known throughout the area for his skill & knowledge in the real art of barbecuing & all can attest, it is the best ever. Another daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Bowden Smith, & husband, Norman Emmett, live in the Pisgah community. They have attended every reunion. This year their daughter, Patricia, & her daughter (Memphis) were with them. Incidentally, Mrs. Earl David Bowden was a member of the Leigh's Chapel United Methodist Church all her life. Also she was a reporter from her community to The Leader for many years. She was past 90 at her death. The other twin daughter, Pearl, married a Smith. Because of his death that marriage lasted only a few years. She later married Mr. Grimes and lived in Ripley but moved back to Covington & the church after his death. She was represented by her youngest daughter, Sarah Smith Walton, & husband, Leno, who live in the Oak Grove community, as always were present and very busy seeing that all things were in order. The youngest of the 3 David brothers, Walter, who settled in Tipton County, spent his entire life in the Leigh's Chapel community. He married Lena Rise, the sister of his older brother's wife. They were well represented and several of that branch of Davids still live in the community. Among those were Dr. Edwin David (Dyersburg), grandson of the older Davids. His father was the late Dr. Peyton David. Another grandson of the older Walter Davids, Mr. & Mrs. Albert David have remained in the community. Their daughter & her family attended. The youngest member of the David family was the grandson of Albert Davids, 4- month-old Zeke David, son of Mr. & Mrs. John David. Barbara Shoaf, granddaughter of Amos Davids and daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Shoaf of Covington, always attends the Reunion. (Mrs. Shoaf is the late Bertha David Shoaf.) On of the David sisters who moved to AR was Aurelia, who married a Mr. McKenzie. She was represented by 2-couples, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Carl of St. Louis, Mo., & the Joe Caples of North Little Rock, AR. The minister of the Leigh's Chapel United Methodist Church with his wife is always a guest & this year was no exception. He gave the invocation before those present filled their plates from all kinds of foods & desserts brought by those attending from outside the community & Covington along with those at home. One thing is certain: The 3rd Sunday in October is an important one for the descendants of the 3-David brothers who lived & raised families in the Leigh's Chapel community. Each year they return to discover new relatives, to memorialize the loss of loved ones, to walk through the Cemetery remembering and recalling their roots, their heritage. This past year only one of the "Tribe," Amos David of AR answered the call to the Master above and he was remembered. The memories of the 1988 reunion will stay alive until October of 1989. /end copy/ --- /Letter:/ 2Nov1989 13799-A E. Marina Dr. Aurora, CO 80014 Dear Fred, We corresponded a year ago on Caleb David, an ancestor of my wife's. His two youngest children were born some years after his death. Robert Marlowe is a descendent of the other child. I wonder if Caleb's widow might have married one of Caleb's nephews after Caleb died, thus explaining the -no name change- for the 2 daughters. I think Caleb's brothers were either dead or too old to be considered. Would appreciate your opinion. If it is a possibility I want to purszue it further. Thank you for your help. Sincerely, signed/Erv Chell --- /Letter:/ 7Nov1989 FREDERICK W. HAURY JR 8810 La Grima de Oro Rd NE ALBUQUERQUE, NM 87111 (505) 298-5050 To: Erv Chell 13779-A E. Marina Dr Aurora, CO 80014 Dear Erv Enclosed is copy of Louis P Graham's afidavit, furnished to me by Robert Marlowe. If accepted as fact, it rules out possibile remarriage by Elizabeth prior to birth of Eliza (1855) or Ollie (1857). Sorry I can't find alternate conclusions. Otherwise the Nephew theory would be plausable. Please let me know if you learn different. Please contact me and plan to visit with me if you are in Albuquerque. Yours truly signed/Fred --- Letter from Robert Marlowe 121 Orchard Lane Oak Ridge, Tn 37830 12 Nov 1993 Dear Esta, Erv & Fred, I came across some information the other day that will interest all of you. A Bridgeman descendant from Marietta, Ga, requested data on that family. I knew that one of William Bridgeman's sons went from Campbell County TN, to Marion County TN. I looked in The Cemeteries of Marion County TN, found BF Bridgeman & others, turned the page & there was David Chaudoin 2-25-1776 - 9-16-1839 Mary Chaudoin 1-17-1773 - 3-19-1853 THAT'S OUR MARY DAVID! Eliza Russell's 28 March 1875 letter from Hamilton County TN to her cousin Eliza Hankins says "The Chandoins (not sure of spelling) family lives about 30 miles from me. I go to see them occasionally. They are the children & grandchildren of grandfather David's only sister. She married a Chandoine". I made 2 erroneous assumptions about that bit of information: that the family lived across the state line in Alabama & that the name was indeed Chandoin. They lived in adjoining Marion County TN, & the name is Chaudoin in all the Marion County records. I went back and looked at the few original Campbell County records with the name & in most cases a "n" could be a "u" but in every transcription by me or anyone else, it is Chandoin. In no other place, however - Marion, Sumner, Robertson, Davidson, nor Dickson - did I once find Chandoin, always some version of Chaudoin. Except for the Eliza Russell reference to the family, the only other ones I had were James In Sampson's will & Mary David & her husband David Chandoin in the court settlement of Martha Bridgeman David's estate. James was evidently in Campbell County during that period for he bought several articles at the estate sale. Does Amos even mention Mary's husband in any of the letters? I think that maybe James married a Bridgeman, probably William's daughter. Incidentally, our Genealogical Society has just published the Campbell County wills & estate settlements, 1807-1841 & has a complete listing of Sampson's estate, Martha's estate, debts owed Martha's estate, & the estate sale. If anyone doesn't have the complete listings, I'll be glad to send a copy. Fred, you mention in your book a David Chandoin in Green Co KY, in 1850 age 43, in Marion County Census is listed as being born in KY. The attached notes on the Chaudoin Family contain what I have learned in the last two weeks. I borrowed Births, Deaths, & Marriages from "Sequachee Valley News", 1891-1920, Volumes I and II and Cemetery Records of Marion County from friends of mine who had done the books, & skipped work two afternoons to go to the McClung Collection. Unfortunately Marion County Courthouse burned in 1922 and destroyed most of the records except for deeds. Seems the Chaudoins were there by 1830 at least. Where were they between 1810 & then? I'm far short of creating a complete listing of Mary's children & I'm not sure at all that the middle TN families are closely related. Maybe you all already have this information. As you can tell, I am really excited by this unexpected find & am reassured that other pieces of the puzzle will likewise fall in place. All is well with us. Certainly hope the same for you all and will look forward to hearing from you soon. Most sincerely, s/ROBERT Robert Marlowe --- R Marlowe notes: CHAUDOIN NOTE ON SPELLING OF NAME: Much confusion has arisen over the spelling of this name. At least the following variations have been found: Chaudoin, Chandoin, Chadoin, Chawoin, Chadion, Chandoine, Chandor, Shadowin, Shadoin, Showoin, and Shadowen. The primary problem has been between the various "Chau" and "Chan" versions. All Campbell County TN transcriptions except 1 or 2, use the C-h-a- n version, for instance, while none of the Marion County versions use C-h-a-n; C-h-a-u or C-h-a-d is always used. Resorting to the original documents has been just as frustrating for it has proved virtually impossible to distinguish the "u" from the "n". The name, however, appears to be CHAUDOIN rather than CHANDOIN.
