Roger and Patrick Casey came to Minnesota and settled in the Lakeville area together around 1854. They were followed closely by Mark and Henry Casey. Although it is not certain just what the relationship is, it is generally accepted that they were all in fact related to each other. Moreover, Domonick Casey of Lebanon Twp. is also thought as being related. All that is known is that they were born in Ireland and moved to Minnesota after spending time at various locations in the east.

MARK CASEY (1807-1862) [top]
BRIDGET BRENNAN (1808-1874)

Mark Casey was born in Ireland and emigrated to the U.S. He and Bridget were married in Ireland and four of their children were born there. The family settled in New Jersey about 1848 and by 1854 the family had moved to Chicago Illinois. In 1855, Mark homesteaded a farm in Section 4 of Lakeville Twp. It is not certain when Mark died but there is no record of him after 1860. It is assumed that Mark is buried in buried St. John's Cemetery.

Mark had two sons that served with Company C of the Fourth Regiment Infantry during the Civil War. James died in 1862 of injuries received at the battle of Iuka and Patrick was discharged in 1865 and returned to Lakeville. When Patrick died in 1916 he was survived by one sister and three brothers.

HENRY CASEY (1812-1867) [top]
MARY (1814-1875)

Henry was born somewhere in Ireland and emigrated to the U.S. in the mid 1840s. Nothing is known about him until he settled in section on a farm in sections 5 & 6 of Lakeville Twp. in Dakota Co. MN some time before 1956. Nothing is known about Henry's wife except that they were married in Ireland. Henry was originally buried in buried St. John's Cemetery but his remains were removed to Highland cemetery at the time of Mary's death.

James H. Casey had an Aunt Margaret Duggan living with him in Lakeville in 1880. She may have been a sister of Henry or his wife ?


PATRICK CASEY (1821-1897)  [top]
ANN MANAGAN (1826-1864)

Patrick was born in an unknown location in Ireland. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1849 and was married on board ship. The ceremony was again performed in 1851 at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City after spending some time in Providence Rhode Island where their first child was born. Patrick was located in Wisconsin by 1852 and is said to have spent some time in Chicago Ill prior to coming to Minnesota. In 1853-54, Patrick and his family traveled to Kenosha Wis. and finally to Minnesota in the company of his brother Roger and his family. In St. Paul, they were joined by Michael Johnston and his family and the three families left for Lakeville Twp. in Dakota Co. where they each located a homestead in section 5.

Ann died in childbirth in 1864 and is buried at St. John's Cemetery in Burnsville. Most of their children moved into St. Paul by the mid 1880s. There remains some confusion regarding Thomas Casey who was living in Graceville at the time of his death. There is a Thomas Casey buried in the Dudley plot in St. Paul which is thought to be the son of Pat and Ann. There is also a Thomas Casey plot in the cemetery in Graceville which might in fact be correct Thomas??

MARY McCARTHY (1829-1879)

Five years after the death of his first wife, Patrick married a widow named Mary Dyer. Mary was born in County Mayo Ireland as Mary McCarthy. Nothing is known for certain about her family but by the early 1860s she was married to Peter Dyer and settled Lakeville. Peter died some time before 1869 when she and Patrick Casey were married. Their marriage is recorded in St. Paul under her maiden name. It was witnessed by one Bridget McCarthy who may have been a sister. Mary had one son named Peter from her first marriage and had two additional sons with Patrick.

Mary died after only 10 years of marriage. All of her children with Patrick along with their half brother Peter Dyer remained single. Joseph lived in St. Paul. Peter remained on the farm with Roger and is buried along side him in Rosemount.

MARY E. LAHART (1850-1889)

In 1882 Patrick was married for the third time to Mary Layhart. Mary was born in New York and moved to Minnesota were she settled in Lakeville with two brothers. Patrick and Mary had three children together Mary was to live only seven years after this marriage dying at 39 years of age. Mary is buried in All Saints Cemetery in Lakeville besides her two brothers.

At the time of his last wife's death, Patrick was already 68 years old with his youngest child only 3 years of age, he found it necessary to send the youngest of his children out to be raised by their older brothers and sisters. Having survived three marriages, Patrick lived another 8 years.


DOMINICK CASEY (1821-1904)  [top]
BRIDGET CALLAGHAN (1824-1904)

Nothing certain is known about Dominick prior to settling in Lebanon Twp of Dakota Co. sometime before 1857. Both he and his wife were born in Ireland but it is not known where they were married. By the time their first child was born they were located somewhere in Illinois. Bridget is known to have a brother named John who also settled in Lebanon Twp. about the same time. Dominick is assumed to be related to the Casey's from Lakeville in part because they were also came here from Ill.

By the mid 1870's, Dominick had sold his farm and moved to Birch Cooley Twp. in Renville Co. MN. He was located for a time on the town of Fairfax. He, his wife and a daughter are buried at the old Irish cemetery at Birch Cooley. It is not known what happened to the rest of their children.

MARY MANNION (1827-1901)

Roger Casey was born in Ireland and emigrated to the U.S. His wife was also born in Ireland but it is not known where they were married. They spent some time in Rhode Island were their youngest child was born. They then moved to Wisconsin were they remained until 1854 when they came to Lakeville Twp. MN along with Patrick Casey. Homesteading a farm in section 8, Roger remained there until his untimely death.

Mary continued to work the farm after Roger's death and remained on the farm until her children were grown. In later years she relocated to Rochester MN were she was residing at the time of her death on Dec. 21, 1901.


PATRICK J. CASEY  (1844-1916) Son of Mark Casey & Bridget Brennan
ALICE McDERMOTT (1855-1883) Dau.of Byron McDermott & Ann McDonald

Patrick was born somewhere in Ireland on Aug 15, 1844 and emigrated to the U.S. with his parents. After living in New Jersey for a time, his family finally settled in Lakeville MN. in 1855. During the Civil War, Patrick served in the the Home Guard Militia and served in 1864-65 in Co. C of the 4th Reg. Inf. When he returned from the war he took over operation of the family farm and was married in 1874. His wife Alice was born in Ottowa Illinois and settled in Burnsville MN with her parents about 1856. The family moved to a farm in Lebanon Twp. in the late 1860s where she was living at the time of her marriage. Two children were born to this couple.

ANN SHEEDY (1863-1923) Dau. of Patrick Sheedy & Catherine Ryan

One year after the tragic death of his first wife, in Feb.1884, Patrick remarried. All that is known about Ann is that she was born in Co. Limerick Ireland and emigrated to the U.S. in 1882. They did not have any children together. Patrick and Ann remained on the farm until 1911 at which time he sold the farm and moved into Rosemount village were he and his wife remained until their deaths. Patrick died Apr. 4, 1916, Ann died Feb. 16, 1923. She is known to have had a sister, Mrs Kate Connelly in St. Paul and a brother still in Ireland at the time of her death.

Matthew Casey was born and raised on his parents farm in Lakeville Twp.. He was married to Margaret in 1883 and moved to a farm in Syness Twp. Stevens Co. MN.. Nothing is known about Matthew's wife except that it appears she married Matthew in St. Paul. Matthew and his wife are buried in Morris MN.

Edward Casey was born and raised in Lakeville Twp. MN. He was married in 1886 and following the family westward, Edward settled on a farm in Syness Twp. next to his brother Matthew. He and his wife are buried in Morris MN.

James was born somewhere in Ireland and settled with his family in Lakeville. About 1875 he married Margaret who was the born in Inver Co. Donagal Ireland and settled with her parents in Lebanon Twp. MN.. After the death of his father, James took over operation of the family farm.

In later years James appears to have moved into West St. Paul were he residing at the time of his wife's death. Her obituary lists four children living in 1896.

HONORAH O'PHALAN (1866-1952) Dau.of P. D. O'Phalan &

Matthew was born in somewhere in Wisconsin while his parents were on their way to Minnesota. He was raised on a farm in Lakeville and eventually moved west to Morris Minnesota. He was married in 1885. His wife was the daughter of Capt. P.E. O'Phalan who later became chief customs officer in Winnipeg Canada. It is said that he operated a string of saloons in western Minnesota and North Dakota. He and his wife settled in Graceville where most of his children were born and raised. he is also said to have lived for a time in the towns of Sisselton & Kimaire N.D..He and his wife are buried in Graceville.

Patrick was born in Wisconsin and raised on a farm in Lakeville MN. Sometime after his marriage to Mary in 1881, he moved out to Stevens County MN and settled on a farm in Danvers Twp. He and his wife are both buried in Morris MN.

According to Patricia A. Casey Buckmaster, a descendent of  Mark Casey and Bridget Finnegan,

William CASEY arrived at the Port of Boston, August 20, 1833 from Ireland. William, age 50, was accompanied by Mary CASEY 15, Thomas CASEY 11, Catherine CASEY 9, Michael CASEY 7, and Mark CASEY age 5. Family stories tell us this family came from County Sligo but sailed to America from Liverpool.
