In 1850, Rev. Adams settled at Langola, Minnesota where he founded and preached for a pioneer church. He was a Congregationalist minister. During the Civil War, the Sioux indians who lived west of the Mississippi River made frequent raids upon the white settlers and peaceful Chippewas and Rev. Adams was obliged to flee with his family to Fort Ripley for safety. In the summer of 1863, he moved to Michigan, traveling northern Minnesota by ox team, crossing Lake Michigan on the schooner "Stronach" and landing at the mouth of the Manistee River.
