He immigrated to the United States in 1862. He arrived in Minnesota at Carver County and lived in Chaska for a couple of years. He moved to Shakopee of Scott County. He ran his own Blacksmith and Wagon repair shop. He married the widow of Leopold Kopp, Elizabeth Reinisch Kopp on October 23, 1871. To this union five children were born: William, Lena, Edward, Mary, and Minnie Catherine Thiede. He was also a member of the Modern Woodman during his life time. He was forced to retire from the blacksmithing business after a serious accident. He lived his retirement years in Shakopee with his wife and family. Finally on April 15, 1922 he died due to the injuries and ill health in Shakopee, Scott County, Minnesota. The funeral services took place at St. Mark's Catholic Church and burial was in the upper Catholic Cemetery. Among the attendees of the funeral were his nephews, John Thiede of Kimball, Minnesota and Robert Thiede of Annadale, Minnesota. They were the sons of Friederich Wilhelm Thiede, brother to Herman J.
