THOMAS C. WALLACE (1904)

Thomas C. Wallace, blacksmith at Porter, is of English descent, being a son
of Thomas and Jane (Martin) Wallace, natives of England.  They came to this
country in a sailing vessel, making the trip in five weeks.  Both are dead,
the father having died in 1897 and the mother in 1908.

Mr. Wallace was born in Kewaunee county, Michigan, November 21, 1869.  When
he was eight years of age the family moved to Houghton, Michigan, and there
at the age of twelve years he began work in a cigar factory and learned the
trade.  Four years later, when he was sixteen, the family moved to Marquette
county, Michigan, where he learned the blacksmith's trade and worked in the
boiler shops.  He then went to Ontonagon county, Michigan, where he worked
one summer for the Diamond Match Company.  There he was also the instructor
of the Maccabees band, he having learned music previously and having
belonged to bands at the various places he lived.

In the fall of 1893 Mr. Wallace moved to St. Louis county, Minnesota, where
he ran a blacksmith shop for the Minnesota Iron Mining Company about five
years and one year for the Virginia Iron Works.  He then went to Palmer,
Michigan, where he took charge of a shop for an iron mining company,
remaining there three years and being leader of the band while there.  In
the fall of 1904 Mr. Wallace moved to Porter and bought Frank Anderson's
blacksmith shop, which he has since conducted.   He is the leader of the
Porter Cornet Band.

Mr. Wallace was married at Mount Iron, St. Louis county, Minnesota, July 3,
1907, to Marie A. Westby, who was born in Fillmore county, Minnesota, and is
the daughter of Christian Westby.  They have five children:  Hazel, Pearl,
Stella, Marion and Clinton.

Mr. Wallace is a member of the Methodist church and belongs to the M.W.A.
lodge.  He has been a member of the village council and was a charter member
of the Porter Fire Department.
