Frank, Thomas J., Charles and 2nd wife Sarah Harris

Thomas J. Harris is the brother of Rev. David Harris. Thomas J. left Grant County, Indiana in 1863 and arrived in Lawrence, Kansas August 22, 1863, the day after Quantrill's Raid. He homesteaded a mile and a half north of the now-nonexistant town of Hesper (2 miles south and one mile east of Eudora, if you're looking on a Kansas map) and attended the Hesper Friends Meeting there. (Hesper Friends Church still exists.) In 1865 he brought his wife Mahala (Van Horn) Harris and their 3 children to Hesper. Mahala died in 1881, leaving him with 7 children, some nearly grown and some in infancy. This photo shows Thomas J. with his second wife Sarah, who he married in Grant County, Indiana. The youngest 2 sons, Frank and Charles are also pictured. (Picture and information from Martha Harris)

4 Generations of Harris Men in Kansas.

Thomas J. Harris and some of his sons. This photo was taken about 1933 in Kansas City, Kansas at the home of Charles and Georgia Harris, Martha Harris's grandparents'. Back row, left to right: Luther ("Doc"), Thomas J., Noah (perhaps named for Thomas J's brother), Irwin David ("I.D."). Front: Lewellyn (son of Luther), Charles (son of Charles -- he apparently had something in his eye just as the photo was taken), Robert Lewis Parke (son of Olive Harris Parke, the oldest daughter of Charles Harris), Charles Harris. The fifth brother, Frank, is not in the photo. There were 2 sisters, Rosa and Lillie, who had died by this time. (Picture and information from Martha Harris.)
