The name McGilvra is but one of the 137 different ways members of the Clan MacGillivray can be spelled. Clan MacGillivray is also a Sept of Clan Chattan, a confederation of many clans.

Clan MacGillivray originated in the Western Isles of Scotland and is one of the oldest known Clans of Scotland.

The first McGilvra of this family genealogy was John MacGillivray who may have been born in the town of Rigg, Snizort parish, Isle of Skye, Scotland ca. 1758.

He and his wife Jenet McLeod came to America in 1780. He was a member of "The 76th McDonald Highlanders"assembled with conscripts from the Highlands and sent to America by the British during the Revolutionary War.

The "76th" was taken prisoner at Yorktown and sent to prison camps in Virginia.

After the "Peace Accord" in 1783 he was released and he and Jenet went to Nova Scotia, where their first child Christa was born. The family then moved down to the Albany, New York area where the rest of the children were born.

From Albany the McGilvra's migrated westward with branches of the Family Tree scattered in many States from the East coast to the West coast of North America..

Research continues on the McGILVRA line and on CLARK, DeANGELIS, FULLER, LUPI, SCACCIA, SCANIO, WAYMAN as well as many others.

Any help with additions, corrections or whatever will be appreciated.

Thanks to all the family members who have contributed information to the Database.
