Settlers of Opotiki
In 1874, John and Caroline and their 20 yr old son Edward left Birmingham, England, in the sailing ship "Kemp' for NZ. They settled in Opotiki where Mr Clay, a Saddler by trade, had a farm at Waioeka, from which he walked to Opotiki each day. In his shop he displayed a little saddle that he had made as a sample of his work when he applied for his contract to make saddles for the Military. The saddle is now the property of his great grandson John Cresswell. (1977) Edward had a General store on the corner of Wellington and St Johns Street, later owned by Mr Charles Connelly. In 1882 Edward married Miss Alice Parkinson, daughter of Mr John P Parkinson, who had caome from Opotiki in 1868. with his family. Alice was a school teacher and was known to her pupils as Miss Alice, she was a honoured guest at the Opotiki Primary School 60th Anniversary in 1933. After their marriage in 1882, Edward and Alice were believed to be the first persons to drive a wheeled vehicle round the Southern side of the Ohiwa Harbour. One of Alices brothers rode first to cut a track and they followed the next day. Edward was the Manager of the Kauri Timber Company Mills at Mercury Bay for some years and then bought a farm in Whakatane, now most of the township of Kopeopeo.

One of the first settlers of the Tahuna district, Morrinsville, Mr William Joseph Collins, died yesterday, in his 68th year. In 1903 Mr Collins, in company with his brother-in-law, the late Mr Fred White, went to Tahuna then a bare-blocks district in its virgin state of tea-tree and fern. MrCollins was secretary of the Tahuna School Committee for about 25 years. He is survived by a family of nine children, all of whom reside in the districts surrounding Tahuna. His wife died in 1931.

The death occurred at Tahuna this morning of Mrs Sarah Rebecca Collins, wife of Mr W J. Collins senior, one of the earliest settlers of the Tahuna district, in her 59th year. Mrs Collins had been in ill health for some time, but her death was sudden. Mr & Mrs Collins came to Tahuna about twenty-five years ago from the Coromandel district and took up a block of unimproved land on the Morrinsville side of what is now the township of Tahuna. In those days there was no formed road to Morrinsville, and until comparitively recent times there was only a clay road. Mrs Collins was closely associated with all district activities, especially the Methodist church and the croquet club. Mrs Collins is survived by her husband and a family of nine children, all of whom reside at Tahuna. Her mother, Mrs R. Smith is living in Auckland. Her sisters are Mesdames E.A. White and Silvius (Auckland) and E.R. Whitechurch (Tahuna) Mr J T. Smith (Tahuna) is a brother.

In 1853 at the age of 17 and a half James Connor, who was born in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland, enlisted in the 68th Light Infantry. After service in in the Crimean war, where he was taken prisoner by the Russians during the battle of Inkerman. He was released after the fall of Seastapol and the Regiment then did garrison duty at Malta thrn India. (contact me for more on this man.)
