Mr S. Gundry's dwelling-house, with all it contained, was burnt to the ground on the 8th Jam. The calamity was rendered more severe by the fact that a child 2 years old, a grand-daughter of Mr Gundry, and a daughter of Mr Latter, perished in the flames. The fire originated from a lantern which had been left alight in the room where the poor child was sleeping; the candle burned down and set fire to the matting and the floor on which it was placed. It unfortunately happened that all of the adult members of the family were absent at an evening party.
