Whitianga History.
James Joseph Jackman came from Australia, arriving as James Joseph White, he later changed his name to Jackman. He bought and ran the Kauri Timber Co Mill Store at the timber yard and also owned various plots of land in Whitianga. Jim Jackman supplied the groceries etc, for several bush camps, to be carried out by his pack horses with split sacks slung on either side. This store always remained open and if it was not attended the men wrote their purchases on a slate and signed it. The Mill Store also housed the Mill Office where workers received their pay, and the Accountants Office. Jackman Ave runs through land once owned by Mr Jackman.

Born in Cornwall, Mr R T Jeffery arrived in New Zealand in 1871, and lived in Canterbury for 22 years before comming to Opotiki in 1893 Mr Jeffery was one of the early settlers on Paerata Ridge, where he bought a farm, which his family managed while Mr Jeffery followed his trade in the township as a Wheelright. Taking a keen interest in local affairs, Mr Jeffrey was a member of the Opotiki Highway Board and for 15 years was on the County Council as well as being a member of the school committee for many years.

The cyclist, Thomas Keefe, aged 15, who was admitted to the Auckland Hospital on Wednesday morning with grave head injuries, died on Friday. Deceased lived at 11a Jervious Road, Ponsonby. The bicycle he was riding collided with a Taxi cab at the corner of Wellington and Hepburn Streets, City.

Mr Abraham Keesing (of the firm A and R Keesing) He endured a long and painfull illness, which as a son of Israel, he bore with pious resignation. As husband, father, and friends, he strictly observed principles of religion and humanity. Affability and benevolence secured for him, the affection of his wife and children, and the esteem of a large circle of friends, who , with his bereaved family will cherish his memory and deeply regret his loss. (may his soul rest in peace).

A carrier, John Keir, age 68 years, received fatal internal injuries at Wanganui, when a wheel of his cart passed over him. He died at the hosp on Sat afternoon. The accident was caused through a portion of the harness breaking and allowing the shafts to drop to the ground. Mr Keir was thrown out of the cart and a wheel passed over him.

Wilfred Kelly pleaded guilty to being a idle and disorderly person, in that he consorted with thieves. Chief Detective McMahon said, the accused had agreed to leave the country if given a opportunity, therefore if the Magistrate ordered him to come up for sentence, when called upon and he left New Zealand, it would be the best thing that could happen, for the Police did not want to be bothered with him. The Magistrate, Mr E C Cutten accordingly convicted accused, and ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon, provided he left the country by Monday.
