NOBLE.
Newspaper Clipping 1863.
I have the painful duty of reporting the awfully sudden death of James Noble, of the Waikato Mititia. It appears the deceased was struck by lightning, whilst sitting in the outhouse on Captain Salmons farm, near the Galloway Redoubt, at Totara, Lower Wairoa. The witness's on the inquest describe that a report was heard, something like that of a gun but more violent. This occurred on Wednesday evening about 5 o,clock. The deceased was much scorched and his shirt and flannel were burning when he was discovered about a minute after. This is the first instance on record of a death by lightning in New Zealand.
