The death has occurred in Auckland of Mr Joseph Rea, of Papakura, a well known figure in political circles. He was a staunch supporter of the Liberal Party and contested the Franklin Electorate, against Mr W F Massey on more than one occasion. In his younger days mr Rea was a keen sportsman, being a enthusiastic yachtsman and a excellant shot. He also identified himself withe local body and farmers union interests.

Information has been received by Mr W J Rees of Shelly Beach Road, to the effect that his son Corporal E O L Rees, of the Auckland Infantry, who was some time ago reported as in hospital in France suffering from pneumonia, has been discharged from that institution and is now at the base depot. Corporal Rees left NZ with the Main Body and was at the landing at Gallipoli, where he was severely wounded in the fighting on the 'Daisy patch. '. Cpl Rees has two brothers on active service.Private S J L Rees, who was in England when the war broke out, is in the King's Liverpool Regiment and has been in the firing-line on and off, since September 1915. The other brother, W P M Rees, left with the Main Body. He served on Gallipoli with the Army Medical Corps, under Lieut Col D N W Murray, DSO, and was promoted on the field to the rank of Sergeant. Sgt Rees returned to NZ on a hospital ship on 1 January 1916, and was discharged. About two months ago he re-enlisted and is now in camp with the Army Medical Corps.

A serious accident befel Mr Charles Reilly while employed at the bagging shed of the Tarakohe Cement Works. A stack of bagged cement, estimated to weigh 3 tons, collapsed completely covering the unfortunate man. It was found that he had sustained a compound fracture of the right leg, below the knee. Dr Woodward was soon in attendance, and the sufferer was conveyed by motor to the Nelson Hospital. No other details.

He was previously wounded in August 1915. On that occasion he was sent to England and after his recovery rejoined his regiment in France, where he gained his Sergeant's stripes.

The death of Mrs Elizabeth Rood of Waipukurau removes one of the original settlers of Hatuma. The late Mrs Rood with her husband took up a section at Hatuma , when it was first cut up, and their family was brought up there. The deceased lady came to New Zealand when 6 years old, from Tasmania and during her 61 years in the Dominion 25 years were spent a Hatuma. She leaves a husband and a grown up family. Private Henry Lee Rouse, who died of spinal disease at Auckland Hospital recently, was the youngest son of Mrs S A Rouse of Hukerenui and one of three brothers who have enlisted in their country's service. Another of the three has lost his left arm through a wound and is now in England, while the third is in camp at Trentham. Private H L Rouse, who was 22, was born at Hukerenui and educated at the public school there and the Whangarei High School. He was for two years in the Territorials and at the time of his enlistment for foreign service was employed in the timber trade.
