INDEX of Incomplete Inscriptions
Inscription # 1
1. This one appears on the tombstones of both Rebecca Crumpton Nichols and
her daughter-in-law, Amanda Newman Nichols, in the Nichols family cemetery
just off Banks Dairy Road in Bulloch Co.:
"Mother, thou hast from us flown
To the regions far above.
We to thee erect this stone
Consecrated by our love."
2. On the tombstone of Theophilus Nichols, husband of Rebecca Crumpton
Nichols:
"His words were kindness
His deeds were love
His spirit humble
He rests above."
3. On the stone of Sarah Ellen "Sallie" Groover Nichols:
"At the crystal river's brink
we shall find each broken link
some sweet day
by and by."
4. Here's the one I need help on, and I do hope that someone, somewhere, has
seen this verse and can fill in the gaps!
On the memorial marker to Absalom J. Nichols, son of Theophilus and Rebecca,
killed at the Battle of Gaines Mill, VA, July 27, 1862:
"In the twinkling of an eye
This precious youth was called to die.
From [unreadable word] to his [honor? mother?] given,
His [rest is unreadable] ..."
