3) GADDIS/BOWEN (formerly GADDIS/RICE)

William Gaddis/Priscilla Bowen Group that originates in Frederick Co, VA about 1740. William died in Hampshire Co, VA (now WV) in 1773 and his family moved to Western PA about 1775. Children include John Gaddis (1741-1827) who remained in Fayette Co, PA; Col. Thomas Gaddis (1742-1834), the builder of Fort Gaddis near Uniontown, PA, who moved to Clinton Co, OH in 1814; Robert Gaddis (1749-1834) who stayed in Fayette Co, PA; Henry Gaddis (1753-aft 1834) who moved to Stark Co, OH in 1812; Capt. Rees Gaddis (abt 1755-1833) who moved from Washington Co, PA to Campbell Co, KY about 1795; and a daughter Anna Gaddis (1747-1778) who married Levi Springer in Fayette Co, PA. William Gaddis is thought to have emigrated from Ireland in the 1730s but his true origins have not been proven. Descendants of this line have been most numerous in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois but can be found nationwide. (Also see Group 26).
