Martin's family lived very near the John L. family, who had children still at home in Martin's age range for siblings. MG A-62 Family rumor was that Martin's father or grandfather was run out of North Carolina for fighting and biting off a man's ear. Supposedly, after Mary Ann Talitha died, he married again, for which his children were furious and never forgave him. I don't have any information on this 2nd wife, but I did find a record of another child born to a Martin Berry Gaddis in McDowell County, North Carolina. (William Herbert Gaddis born 5/28/1885 in McDowell County, North Carolina. Died 9/1968.) Mary Ann Talitha Carter had claimed to be related to General Robert E. Lee, but we've not had any success yet connecting her as have been unable to verify her ancestry as well. I speculate that she was the child of Josiah Henry Carter and Jane Pinson, based on census records, as they too lived nearby the Gaddis family in 1860. She may have had a sister named Altha (or Alpha?), who was married to T. Justice by the same minister that married Mary Ann, and the 1850 census for Union County, Georgia shows those names listed under a Josiah H. Carter's household.
