Credits to Wayne Smith of Bogalusa La. and Frank Homes of Fort Valley Ga. for their help in this venture into the past of our Gaddis family. We seek the parents of James Gaddis to continue.


Migration of the family as we know it by records.

1824. *James Gaddis, Birth 11 July 1824 in Crab Orchard, Mecklenburg Co. N.C .

1848. Married to Cynthia Findley in Ga. 26, Dec. 1848 at 24 years of age

Total 14 (as we know it by records) children by James and Cynthia, *Cornelius, Martha A, George Jefferson, Mary J., Jane, Bards, Vaden H., Virgil W., Catherine E, Catherine, Calvin, James, John, Jason.

1860 US Census Ga. Gordon Co. unknown township image 137 page 381 household 941 shows James 33, Cynthia 33, six children, *Cornelius 10 years old, Martha A. 9, George A. 8, Mary J.6, Catherine E.3, Varden H.1

1862 James Gaddis enlisted in the confederate cavalry in Company F, 1 Georgia Cavalry at , Fairmount, Gordon Co. Ga. March 22, 1862 under the command of Col. J. J. Morrison, where he was paid 40 cent a day for the use of his horse, he was discharged after the surrender near Charlotte N.C. May,1865 at 41 years of age. He applied for and got a pension in July 1886 at Bartow Ga. roll # 93. Documented with a copy of his pension record. James mustered out of the service in May 1865 and moved to Con's creek Ga.

1870 US Census Ga. Cherokee County, Con's creek, Image 9 & 11 district 1031 household 76 & 92. James/Cynthia at 45/44 years old had 10 children living at home, Martha 23,George 19 Mary 17, Jane 15, Bards 13, Vardon 11, James 9,Jason 7, John 5, Catherine 2 Lindon *Cornelius moved and married Melinda and had *Thomas Marion 1 year old. At this time Corneluis and Melinda were 20/21 years old.

1880 US Census Al. Etowah County Image 6 ed 67 James/Cynthia had six children living at home. James as a farmer and Cynthia as a housekeeper. They also had a granddaughter Badget P. age 5 and orphans Badget M age 3 and Badget W.age 1 living with them. LC< Lender Cornelius and Melinda age 30/31 were in the same county Image 13 ed 67 with my grandfather *Thomas M. at 11 years of age. Ida Mae at 9, Alice at 4, John at 2. In 1886 James was a widower and had moved back to live with one of his sons in Cassville, Bartow county Ga. This is confirmed by his pension records. We can't prove what son, but the son had to be George Jefferson, the only one living at Cassville at that time. He died in 1898.

1900 US census Al. Etowah County, Ballplay precinct 5 Image 2 ed 152 has Lindon and Lindy with three of the children in household. Lindon as a farmer and Lindy as a midwife. They were 50/51 years old. Thomas Marion had married and moved to Varnado La.where he died 22 Dec.,1947

After the 1900 Census and before 1927 Cornelius and Melinda had moved to the Hub Mississippi area where they both died, Melinda 1912 and Cornelius 1927 Verified by living relatives. Both are buried at Caney cemetery, Hub Mississippi.

*Lender (Lindon) Cornelius Gaddis B- 9 Oct. 1849-Cherokee County Ga. D -30 July 1927-Pine Burr Ms. one of 11 children of James & Cynthia. Buried at Caney cemetery Hub MS.

Melinda "Lindy" Howell Gaddis B-28 July 1848-Cherokee County, 15 district, Ga. Married 19 Aug 1869 D-1912 Buried at Caney cemetery, Hub Ms.

Children:

*1.Thomas Marion Gaddis , first child ,B-8 June 1870 Con's Creek Ga. D-22 Dec. 1947 one of eight children Ida Mae, Cora Alice, John C., Marcus C., (Willie Dora Magdaline Gertrude Lillie Josephine) Teara B.M., Union M.

Tom Gaddis was the local vet. and blacksmith of Varnado La. I know this because at eight years of age I was in charge of pumping the bellows for the fire. Jerry Stacey
