Who We Are


These webpages are an assortment of families from all over the world that are working together to find their Gaddis, Geddes, Gattis, etc ancestors.  Some of us are related, some of us are not, but we all have one common goal - To trace our families. 

Most of us are subscribers to the GADDIS-L mail list sponsored by RootsWeb. There are over 100 of us researching various lines of Gaddis' as of the creation of this webpage.

Where did the Gaddis name come from?  There are many variations on this.  We have many families that seem to have come from Ireland and Scotland.  A few of them even reportedly came in the same years, but we have not found any connection, as of yet.  Most, but not all, are Scots-Irish or Ulster Scots.  Far greater number of GEDDES, GADDES, etc in Scotland than Northern Ireland. The obvious Scottish ties and origin of the name.

The name itself varies considerably in it's spelling within America, where newcomers' names were written by those unfamiliar with the spelling, and those who did know how to pronounce the name did not spell.

For convenience, we have decided to use the one spelling "Gaddis" to signify all variations of the spelling of our names.  In our searches, we have found our names spelled numerous ways.  You will see references throughout this site to G*DD*S or GADDIS.  These are referring to all variations of these families spellings.  Listed below are some of the variations we've come across in our searches.  If you know of others, please feel free to let me know and I will add them to the list.
