STAIGH - the death of Cecil B. Staigh of 1313 Argyle Avenue, well known Saskatoon artist and businessman occurred suddenly in a local hospital on August 3rd, 1977. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, August 6th at 1:30 p.m. from St. Timothy's Anglican Church conducted by Rev. Jack Cameron. A prayer service will be held in the Chapel of the Saskatoon Funeral Home on Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. Surviving are: his wife Kay; a niece ...; 2 brothers Oswald... and Sidney...; 2 sisters ...Pearl... and ...Irene...; also a number of other nieces and nephews and sister-in-law ...Alice... He was predeceased by 4 sisters and a brother. Mr. Staigh was born at Byng Inlet, Ontario and came west with his family in 1912 to settle at Semans, Sask. He came to Saskatoon about 50 years ago and served for a number of years as store manager with the O.K. Economy in Saskatoon. Mr. Staigh had been associated with Eaton's store in Saskatoon for 25 years prior to his retirement in 1970 due to ill health. He had been a member of the Saskatoon Cosmopolitan Club. Mr. Staigh was widely recognized in the field of Art. Mainly self-taught, he found water color an exciting medium for capturing the moods and colors of the prairies, and he especially enjoyed painting the old farm buildings, our Vanishing Heritage. He had held one-man shows in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, as well as several group shows. Mr. Staigh's watercolors and paintings are in private collections in Canada, the United States and in many countries of the world. Interment will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery. Elwood was Born in 1885 in Nobleton, Ontario. He homesteaded in Saskatchewan in 1911. He moved to the Choiceland area in 1932 where he farmed until 1956 when he moved to Choiceland. He resided there until his death. Brother Ballard met the Salvation Army when in his 80's, in Melfort. He found he wanted to serve his Lord and was enrolled as a soldier at the age of 87. He was supportive of all activities of the outpost and was always ready with a testimony of God's leading in his life. Mr. Ballard was one of the original members signing the membership for the Sask. Wheat Pool. Elwood enjoyed people and this was displayed in the way he loved to visit and have visitors in his home. He belonged to the Choiceland Senior Citizens and until the time he was confined to hospital, he was a keen carpet bowler -- an activity which he enjoyed every week. Elwood was the oldest person living in the village of Choiceland. He is survived by his wife, Annie; one son Lyman ...; one daughter, Margaret ...; and 4 grandsons. |

His family came to Canada in 1894 and settled at Black Lake, Quebec. He received his education at Sherbrooke, Quebec. He followed his family west in 1910 to Duval, Sask. where he was engaged in a farming operation. He married Eliza Brooks at Strasbourg, Sask. June 2, 1924 and the couple took up residence at Strasbourg. They moved north to Choiceland in 1930 where Tom was engaged in a farming operation. He moved into the village of Choiceland in 1946 where he owned and operated a garage. He retired in 1963 and continued to reside in Choiceland until his death. He was predeceased by brothers Adrian, Walter and Ebie and two great-grandsons Joe and Gary. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Eliza, one daughter Mary,..., two granddaughters ...; four great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Memorial Tributes may be given to Choiceland Skating Rink. | LATE HERBERT SANDERS Many old friends in Brock and Reach will learn with regret of the passing at his home in Hollywood, Cal., on Friday, December 20th, 1940 of Herbert Sanders, a former resident of Victoria Corners, in his 62nd year. The funeral took place to Hollywood cemetery. The late Herbert Sanders was born in Brock Township, in 1878, a son of the late Joseph Sanders and Bridget Golden, and married Miss Jean Kindred of Peterborough, who predeceased him a year ago. For the past seventeen years they have resided at Hollywood, where he was engaged as a building contractor and a year ago Mr. Sanders suffered a stroke from which he partially recovered but two weeks previous to his demise he contracted flu which finally resulted in his death. To mourn his death are left one son Dr. -- Sanders and one daughter Mrs. -- both of Hollywood, Cal., and three sisters, Mrs. Theo. Johnson, Mrs. J.G. Merrick of Uxbridge and Mrs. Wm. Wingfield of Hamilton, to whom the sympathy of the community is extended in their loss. |
| Udney - Mrs. Wm. Acton, beloved wife of William Acton, passed away here on Sunday, February 16. Mrs. Acton came here with her husband over fifty years ago. The funeral, which was held from the family residence, lot 11, concession 11, Mara, on Tuesday, February 18, was largely attended by friends and relatives from the surrounding community as well as friends from Elmvale, Barrie, Uxbridge and Toronto. The pallbearers were her six nephews; Edgar, Smith, Thomas and Wesley Speiran, Wesley Martin, and Russell Acton. Mrs. Acton was of a quiet, kindly disposition, a good Christian as well as a devoted wife and mother. She leaves to mourn her loss, as well as her aged husband, two sons and three daughters, Charles, of Port Carling; Mrs. Fullerton, of Bent River; Mrs. A.H. | Funeral Today for Mrs. Rahlfs Who Died Sunday Emergency Operation Fails to Save Life of Bantry Mother Funeral services for Mrs. R.J. Rahlfs, who passed away Sunday evening will be held this afternoon at 2 p.m. at the home and 2:30 at the Methodist church, the Rev. Elven officiating. Her passing came as a shock to her family and friends. On Friday evening she had remarked she felt better than she had in years. Early Saturday morning, she had an attack of gall bladder trouble and was taken to the hospital at Rugby. An emergency operation was performed Saturday evening between 7 and 8 o'clock,, but peritonitis had made such great headway that all efforts to save her were hopeless. She died at 8 p.m. Sunday. Mrs. Rahlfs, nee Edna McDonald, the daughter of Angus and Isobel McDonald, was born at Hamilton, N. Dak., October 21, 1888. She went to the province of Saskatchewan with her parents and family when a child, and lived there until she married. On October 19, 1909, she married Richard J. Rahlfs, at Regina. In the spring of 1910 Mr. and Mrs. Rahlfs came to Bantry, where they had lived since. Thirteen children were born to them, eleven of whom are still living. The survivors are Mr. Rahlfs, and Irene (Mrs. K.C. Halley), Earl, Fay (Mrs. John Sannes of ElPaso, Texas), Duane (now on the U.S.S. Oklahoma on the ocean between San Francisco and the Hawaiian islands), Donald, Merle, Shirley, Joyce, Donna May, Patricia, and Richard Jr. John died at the age of fifteen, and Fern died in infancy. Other survivors are her mother, Mrs. Isobel McDonald of White Fox, Sask., and brothers and sisters: Earl of Jasmin, Sask., Willard and Clifford of Nipawin, Sask.; Joe and James of White Fox; Mrs. Ethel Ferguson, of Codette, Sask., Mrs. Shaw of White Fox; Mrs. Bert Sanders of Vanscoy, Sask., and Fred of White Fox. Mrs. McDonald, Mrs. Ferguson and Mrs. Sannes have arrived for the funeral. Duane could not obtain a release from the Navy. |
| Stuart W. McKay Died at Virden (Virden Empire-Advance, Virden, Manitoba) Friends and relatives were shocked to learn of the passing of Stuart Walker McKay of Lenore in Virden District Hospital, on Monday, December 22nd. Although feeling less vigorous recently, Mr. McKay continued to carry responsibility until the time of his recent illness. Born at Victoria Corners, Ont., on December 17, 1882, Mr. McKay first came west to LaRiviere, Man., in 1907, settling in Lenore in 1913 after buying a general store business for Carscadden Bros. He had been continuously in the general store business with the exception of five years in the mercantile trade operating out of Winnipeg. A member of Lenore Presbyterian Church, he served as elder chairman of the board of managers and representative elder to the Brandon Presbytery. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. since its institution in Lenore, and the Canadian Order of Foresters. Mr. McKay was an active member and a post president of Lenore Chamber of Commerce, besides representing the municipality of Woodworth as director of the Hamiota District hospital. He had been a lifelong supporter of the Conservative party, holding positions on the provincial and federal executives for Lansdowne and Brandon constituencies. He also served the Lenore school board for 10 years as secretary-treasurer besides acting as chairman of the board for an equal period. Left to mourn his loss are his widow, the former Kathleen Dryden ...; one son, Stuart...; 3 grandchildren, two sisters... and one brother .... Funeral services were held in Lenore Presbyterian Church on Wednesday afternoon, December 24th. Rev. W.O. Nugent of First Presbyterian Church, Brandon College conducted the service. | Worden - The death of Marquis Dufferin (Mark) Worden, age 88 years of Vanscoy, Sask, a pioneer teacher in the province occurred in a local hospital on March 3, 1968 following a brief illness. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday March 6th at 2:00 p.m. from Vanscoy United Church, conducted by Rev. Ross McCann. Surviving are: three sons, Clifford, Saskatoon, Orville, Surrey, B.C. and Stanley, Nanaimo, B.C. three daughters, ...Marian, ...Beatrice, ...Wilma,; 17 grandchildren and four great grand children. He was predeceased by his wife Mary Ann in 1965. The late Mr. Worden was born in Hillsburg, Ontario. He qualified as a teacher at the age of 19 and engaged in the teaching profession in Ontario until coming west to homestead at Zelma, Sask, in 1906. He moved to Vanscoy about 59 years ago and taught in various schools in and around Vanscoy until his retirement in 1944. Mr. Worden was one of the original members of the Vanscoy United Church Committee of Stewards and had served as statistical secretary of the Saskatoon Presbytery of the United Church for many years. Mr. Worden had taken part in a wide variety of community activities in the Vanscoy district throughout the years. He served as Star-Phoenix correspondent for many years and remained active in this work to the time of his passing. Interment will take place in Vanscoy Cemetery. | Edward Carlson Vanscoy - Chairman of the Vanscoy school board and for 22 years councilor in the Rural Municipality of Vanscoy, Edward Carlson, 74 died recently. Funeral service was held from the United Church, which was filled to capacity. Conducting was W.R. Swann of Vanscoy, assisted by D. Rudd of Saskatoon. Pallbearers were E.J. Ward, A.V. Ward, R. Thomas, O.E. Allen and R. Rowatt. Burial was in Wild rose Cemetery. Mr. Carlson was born in Sweden and came to the United Sates in 1892, marrying 10 years later while in Minnesota. The couple homesteaded here in 1906. Mr. Carlson was active in all community affairs until six year ago, when he suffered ill health. He assisted in organizing the local co-operative organization in 1916 and was a director. He served on the school board for 15 years. Surviving are his widow, one sister in Saskatoon and a brother in Sweden. |
| Alexander Lyons Passed Away At Teulon, Manitoba It was with deep regret the community learned of the death of Alexander Lyons who passed away in his sleep early Wednesday morning, November 5th, 1952. Born in Scott township May 25th, 1879, he was the son of the late William T. Lyons and Jemima Mustard. Funeral service was held in Teulon United church on Saturday, November 8, the local branch of the Loyal Orange Lodge of Teulon, taking the service and burial was made at Roland, Manitoba, where the Roland Lodge took the service. Alex was a member of the Order for 52 years. In 1898 Alexander Lyons went to Roland and in 1900 married Ethel Wager of Roland, who predeceased him September 30, 1928 at Teulon. Mr. and Mrs. Lyons lived in Roland, Oakville, Manitoba, Carievale, Sask., coming to Teulon in 1928. | LORNA AILEEN JOHNSON In the hospital at New Toronto on August the 24th, 1935, the very sad death occurred of Miss Lorna Aileen Johnson, in her 24th year, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Johnson, Uxbridge, following a lingering illness of nearly two years. The funeral took place to St. John's cemetery, Brock on Tuesday, August 27th, 1935, service being held at the home of her parents. Lorna was a former high school student in Uxbridge, a member of the United church and also of the C.G.I.T. girls here. After leaving school she entered the nursing profession, during which time she contracted a serious illness. Just previous to graduating she was ordered to take a rest by her physician and notwithstanding she had received the best of medical care and bore her affliction with unusual patience (always with a ready smile for everyone) even this failed to restore her to former health. For over a year hopes were entertained that her brave fight would eventually win, but on Wednesday of last week she took a turn for the worse and lasted only a few days. The funeral was largely attended by friends and neighbors from many parts, and the beautiful floral tributes from t his vicinity and also from distant places where Lorna was well known spoke plainly of the high esteem in which she was held and of the many friends she had made. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Mr. Littlewood of Vroomanton who chose for his text, "Greater love hat no man than this that he lay down his life for his friends," which was very appropriate as Lorna showed her willingness to make any sacrifice for the welfare of others. She leaves to mourn her loss, a sorrowing mother and father, also one brother Charlie of Victoria Corners to whom to heartfelt sympathy of this community is extended in their very sad bereavement. |

| EARLE GOLDWIN SANDERS The death of Earle Goldwin Sanders occurred Thursday, May 21, after an illness of two weeks. Deceased was born at Uxbridge, Ontario. He had resided at White Fox for the last three years, coming from Vanscoy, west of Saskatoon. His bereaved parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Sanders are well known merchants of White Fox and Vanscoy and it is on the edge of his father's farm that the White Fox resort is situated. Deceased's mother and brother who were in charge of the Vanscoy store arrived at White Fox just a few days before he died. A cerebral tumor is given as the cause of death. Besides his parents he leaves to mourn two brothers, Bert, Vanscoy and Harvey, White Fox. The funeral was held Friday, May 22, and there was a large gathering in the United Church for the service, which was conducted by Rev. H.E. Fennell. Hymns sung were "What a Friend we have in Jesus", "The Sands of Time are Sinking", "Peace, Perfect Peace", and "Forever with the Lord". The choir sang "nearer My god to Thee" as an anthem with Mr. Rusk presiding at the organ. Pall bearers were E. Rusk, Roy Collins, M. Galliger, G. Boweh, H. Payne and W. Love. Interment was made in the White Fox cemetery. Floral tributes were from: Father and mother, Harvey and Bert; Love Family; Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Robb and family; Keith, Garrie and Enid; Mr. and Mrs. S. | SANDERS - Mr. John James Sanders of White Fox aged 72 years, 11 months, 26 days passed away at his home on November 29. The late Mr. Sanders came from Vancouver to Vanscoy in 1911 where he operated a general store until 1925. He then moved to White Fox and started the first pioneer store. The White Fox Tourist Park was owned by him and developed into a summer resort. Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 3rd in the Orange Hall, White Fox Rev. Thomas of the United Church officiated. A large number attended. Hymns used were "Jesus Lover of My Soul", "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Rock of Ages". Mrs. Thomas presided at the organ. The pallbearers were Messrs. S.A. Collins, Ed. Rusk, Geo. Evans., F. Campbell, W. Atkinson and K. Baldwin. Interment was made in White Fox cemetery, Mitchell's Funeral Home in charge. Surviving are his widow who was visiting in Ontario at the time of his death, also two sons, Bert of Vanscoy and Harvey of White Fox. | LATE WESLEY SANDERS There passed away in Toronto at 346 Windermere Ave., on August 12th, Joseph Wesley Sanders, after an illness of about seven months from which there seemed to be no hope of recovery, he was called away. His patience and calmness while enduring suffering was most remarkable, being an inspiration tot he many friends who visited him. The funeral service was conducted from his home on Saturday, August 15th by the Rev. W. L.L. Lawrence pastor of Windermere Ave. United church, who made special emphasis of the blessing he received by witnessing the patience and peacefulness of the departed at all times. those left o mourn the loss are: his beloved wife, one son Mervyn and daughter Eleanor both at home, also two brothers, John J. Sanders, merchant of White Fox, Sask., and Herbert of Los Angeles, Cal; also three sisters, Mrs. Wallace Winfield of Hamilton; Mrs. Theodore Johnson and Mrs. Gilbert Merrick, both of Uxbridge, to whom the sincere sympathy of relatives and friends are extended in this their dad bereavement. The burial took place in Park lawn cemetery and was attended by many relatives and friends who expressed their sympathy with many beautiful floral tributes. Wesley Sanders was born at Vallentyne fifty seven years ago and was the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Sanders. He was a resident of Toronto for the past thirty-five years and followed building and contracting very successfully and gained for himself a host of friends due to his honesty and uprightness. |

| MRS. FRANCIS MCLAUGHLIN The death occurred at Govan, Sask. on Friday, February 25th, 1938, of Frances Acton, widow of the late William McLaughlin, in her 88th year. The remains were brought to Sunderland on Friday, March 4th, 1938 for interment in West Brock cemetery, services being conducted by Rev. Mr. Jamieson in St. Mary's church, Sunderland. The late Frances Acton was born in Brock township, a daughter of the late John Acton and Sarah Doble and married the late William McLaughlin who predeceased her some sixteen years ago. For many years they farmed in Brock township until 1912 when the family moved to Govan, Sask. where they have since resided. Despite her advanced years Mrs. McLaughlin made several visits to her old home in Brock, the last being about six months ago when she made the round trip by herself, but since her last visit her health had not been so good and news of her passing came as a shock to her many friends and relatives. To mourn her death a left two sons Ryerson at home and John of Sunderland, also eight daughters: Mrs. Richard Shier, Mrs. Fred Lucas, Semans, Sask; Mrs. James Acton, Mrs. Angus Swanick, Mrs. Walter Fernix, Govan Sask; Mrs. A.J. Taylor, Toronto, Mrs. Wilmot Yakes, Victoria Corners and Miss Maud at home as well as twenty-three grandchildren and six great grand children. The pall bearers were six of her grandchildren and the honorary pall bearers were great grand children. |

The death of Margaret Elizabeth Shier, Uxbridge, occurred at Lockwood Clinic on Nov. 1st. She had been ill for six weeks. The deceased was born in Scott Twp. on Jan 16 1874. She married the late George D. Shier, and farmed all their life. Left to survive is one son Ray, two other children died at infancy. Four grandchildren. One sister Mrs. J.J. Memorial for William Bertram Sanders - March 23, 1904 - August 15, 1983 William Bertram Sanders was born in Reach Township, Victoria Corners, Ontario on March 23, 1904. He took two years of schooling when the family moved to Vanscoy, Saskatchewan. He attended the Laura (sic) School. He married Verna May McDonald on November 22, 1926 and the couple took up residence at Vanscoy where they operated a Red and White store and he also farmed at White Fox. In 1946 the family moved to Choiceland where he operated the International Harvester as well as continuing to farm. They retired in 1968 and moved to Vancouver where he was residing at the time of his death. He leaves to treasure his memory his loving wife, Verna; five daughters...; one son...; four grandsons, ...five grand daughters,...; four great grandsons and one great grand daughter; all of whom will miss Grandpa Bert. With his many tricks and stories he fascinated all the children. He was predeceased by two brothers and a grand daughter. |
Obituary for Gerald "Gerry" Merrick Merrick: Gerry Merrick, Gerald "Gerry" passed away at Caressant Care in Harriston Ontario on Monday November 14th, 2011 in his 66th year. Gerry will be greatly missed by his siblings Nancy (Terry) Parks, Pat (Karen) Merrick, sister-in-law Colleen Merrick, Peter (Ann) Merrick, Mary (Gilbert) Vervoort, Shelagh (Dave) Rheinhardt and John (Nancy) Merrick. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Gerry was predeceased by his parents Leo and Anne and also by brothers Michael, Robert and by his sister-in-law Lucia. Visitation for Gerry will be held on Thursday November 17th from 7-9 pm, Friday November 18th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm and the Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Mary's Church in Elora on Saturday November 19th at 1pm. Burial will be at St Mary St Joseph's Cemetery in Elora immediately following the service. Memorial donations can be directed towards the Canadian Paraplegic Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. |

Mr. John Johan Letkeman aged 85 passed away on December 31st at the Swift Current Union Hospital after a short illness. Funeral services will be held on Jan. 4, 1968 at the Zion Mennonite Church in the city. Warren's Funeral Home in charge of arrangements with Reverend Abe Neufeld and Reverend David Dueck officiating. Mr. Larry Letkeman, Vernon Letkeman, John Froese, Stanley Froese, Ben Funk and Isaac Funk will act as pallbearers. Mr. Letkeman is survived by his wife Elizabeth of the city, one sister; six daughters Agenetha (Mrs. J. Funk) of the city, Sarah (Mrs. A Wall) Saskatoon, Elizabeth (Mrs. J. Froese) of the city, Anna (Mrs. D. McCuaig) of London, Ont, and two sons George, Abbotsford, B.C. and Benjamin of the city. He was predeceased by his parents, three sisters and three brothers. Mr. Letkeman was born in Olgafeld, Frestenland, Russia on September 30, 1882. He immigrated to Canada in 1903 to settle at Winkler, Man. In 1906 he moved to a homestead in the Wymark area and took up residence in Wymark Village in 1947. Recently, he has resided at No. 7 Prairie Pioneer Lodge. During his life Mr. Letkeman has been a member of the Mennonite Conference Church, a former overseer of the Village of Schoenfeld, taught school in Winkler, Man. acted as appraiser for Mennonite Holdings preparatory to decisions on relocation moves, and during the early 1940's acted as an official receiver at which time he received the Earl of Athlone, the Governor General of Canada while on a tour of Western Canada. |
| WALL The death of Mr. Abraham P. Wall (age 83 years of Saskatoon occurred in a Saskatoon hospital on Sunday , June 20, 1985. The Funeral Service will be on Thursday July 4 at 1:00 p.m. from Westwood Funeral Chapel, Ave. N and 20th Street conducted by Rev. Donald McCuaig and Rev. David Opheim. Surviving are: his loving wife Sarah and children Marie (Stuart) Thiesson of Saskatoon, John of Yellowknife, NWT, Louise Tweed of Saskatoon and Richard (Valerie) of Prince Albert; seventeen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; one brother, Jacob of Vanderhoof, BC and numerous nieces and nephews throughout Canada. The late Mr. Wall was born at Altona, Manitoba in 1902 and moved with his parents to Blumenhof, Sask in 1912. He married in 1927. Mr. Wall was an avid fisherman and sports enthusiast. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Internment will take place in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. |
