When I first logged onto the internet in January of 1996, one of the first things I did was put my maiden surname in a search engine to see what turned up. Actually, I'm lying, the first thing I did was to go straight to one of those real-time cameras and look at the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles. Anyway, I came up with zillions of entries for Gailer..a school in Vermont, Maria Gailer Strauss in Austria, an offer to purchase a rare book by J. Gailer written for children in the 1700's, to name a few.

I also came across some email addresses and contacted a few of these Gailers'. There are varying theories as to where the Gailer's originated from. I always thought we were Scottish, because Dad used to sing (or try to...he was tone deaf) Scottish songs. My sister, Susie, thought we were Danish.

While researching on the Internet, I met Pat Gailer, from New Zealand who believes he's the only family there and that he originates from Switzerland, in the Alsace-Lorraine Region in the town of Metz.

Karl Gailer, in New Zealand, thinks his dad is the first Gailer in New Zealand.

James Gailer, in St. Albans, England, has an entire database of Gailer's, and names from a book that Burke's Peerage did, which shows the majority of Gailer's originating and residing in Germany! His family believes that the name is derived from "Gaelor", or Jailer.

I started corresponding with James and Greg from Australia, whom I found (after much research), to be fourth cousins! James's mother, Gladys Ella Gailer, had done a majority of research and writing things down before her death in 1996. James then put what she had down in a database that he shared with me.

On top of the pleasure of finding hereto unknown relatives, I was also made privy to their extensive databases, which made mine look pathetic.  With such a head-start I couldn't help but start questioning my mother on her side of the family to try to round the tree out.

By joining the ROOTS Surname Mailing list, I found out the origin of my mother's family name, and I quote: "Fougere: (There's an accent over the first 'e' but I can't figure out how to put it there!) This patronymic surname is derived from the Latin word "filicaris", which means "fern" (i.e. fougere in French). A man would be given this surname when the fern was a characteristic plant of his estate. With time and according to the interpretation of parish priests and notaries, the spelling of this surname was modified. The spellings "Fougere" and "Fugere" were used.

And I quote:, "The ancestor of the Fougere and Fugere families in Quebec and in the Maritimes was originally from Pourpay, in Beauce, France. The lineage of Jean Fougere is unknown. He married in France approximately in 1675 to Marie Barree. The date and the circumstances of their arrival in Acadie are unknown. Their eldest son, Jean, born in 1685, married Marie Bourg in 1713 in Port-Royal (today known as Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia). Marie Bourg was the daughter of Abraham Bourg and Marie Bru. Six children were born of whom two sons had descendants.

It is important to remember that at that time the Acadie included all of the Atlantic Coastal area: the neighboring islands; from New England to the Gaspe peninsula; the Baie-des-Chaleurs and its main outposts: Restigouche and Tracadieche (now Carleton in the Gaspe peninsula). Fougeres could mostly be found in Port-Royal towards Ile Royale, Ile du Cap Breton. Approximately in 1752, Joseph, who ran a coasting vessel, and his wife Marguerite Coste were living on Ile Saint-Jean in Prince Edward Island. The Fougeres were fishermen who exploited the Atlantic banks.

Then, between 1750 and 1758, the Great Trouble occurred. The English invaded Acadie and it's inhabitants, refusing to pledge allegiance to the King, were deported. Families were separated and dispersed all over the world. Some could be found in New England, in Louisiana, in Europe, even as far as Australia. Many of these families found refuge in Quebec. The Fougeres fled mostly to Gaspe. Fabien Fougere, grandson of Joseph, was the first inhabitant of that name in the Baie-des-Chaleurs. Nowadays, the spellings "Fougere" and "Fugere" are used indistinctly. These families are well established in Quebec as well as in the Maritimes and other parts of North America.""

I've been corresponding with Bobbi Heidenrich who straightened out a lot of misconceptions I had re: Peter Matthews. And she forwarded to me a lot of information from Richard, Clarence Matthews and Clayton Sharrard. which practically doubled my database!

Some Gailer's I haven't been able to connect to my family...yet. Liz Read in England and I have been writing back and forth and I'm really enjoying the email.

Kim Sheridan nee Gailer was looking for her father and we both found him at roughly the same time in California. I can't seem to connect him to my line.. Frederick Gailer, born in December 1934 .He may have had a brother, Bill or Willy.

Liz Gailer Read wrote with a whole clan of Gailers from Minstead. She says they immigrated to and from London. One Aunt went to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. I haven't been able to connect her line with mine..but even if I don't it sure is fun emailing her.

She says that she's visited Minstead Church and the graveyard is full of Gailers and that it is also interestingly the resting-place of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle( Sherlock Holmes.) Although there is no connection

Her line starts with William Gailer Farmer in the Village of Minstead Hampshire not sure who he married.. his son..

Joseph Gailer married Sophie Berridge on 4.6.1865 All saints Church Islington UK..and so one. Anyone have any clues?

Then I had the good fortune to receive an email from Jan Gregor, from Christchurch, New Zealand.. Her brother came across my website, told his father, Murray Gregor, who has been corresponding with me regarding his father John Athol Gregor. It appears that John Athol Gregor is none other than Arthur Gailer, son of James Gailer and Annie Howes..in my line! This gentleman lived to one hundred and two years of age and I've just finished reading a little about what he wrote of his life and it's utterly fascinating. As soon as I receive permission I'm going to add the photos and poems, etc, to my site.

What this site is is the culmination of James' mom's, Gladys Ella Gailer, efforts, Greg Gailer's research, Bobbie Heidenrich's supply of Matthews data and the following sources:( And I know the number's are doubled. I'll fix them during this century I'm sure.

4. Edith Grace Lawrence, Dad's sister. Aunt Edith's Notes.

6. Sue Kenny. Family Chart. My sister...probably forgot she left me with it.
7. Edith Grace Lawrence, Dad's sister. Aunt Edith's Notes. Under "The Matthew Connection", there's a long history of the facts leading up to the hanging of Peter Matthews and Samuel Lount, for participating in the rebellion of 1837.
They cite his father, Captain Thomas Elms Matthew, as settling in Brougham. I'm assuming, Peter, being the first of 9 children, was born in Brougham.

8. Evelyn Decoste..... Cape Jack Book.
9. James Gordon Gailer's wife, Karin. James Gordon is John Gordon Gailer's son.
