TO BEGIN

From the records of The Christ Church in Philadelphia, Pa., we find a marriage of one Robert Johnston to Lillias Corbett on May 24, 1737. It is believed that this marriage was the first Johnston/Johnson marriage in America which begins our Johnson line of descendancy. Where did we come from? When did we arrive? On what ship did we embark upon this journey? Some of these questions can be answered in the following pages. Some of these questions will never be answered. Records have been lost to war, fires, and time.

I started looking for Robert and Lillias Johnston about two years ago when a reference was made to them by Robert W. Ramsey in his book,"Carolina Cradle". Ms. Ellen Carper had listed this book as a source. This book was written about the early settlers in what is now North Carolina. It seems that a Robert and Lillias Johnston moved into Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina in the same time frame that our Thomas Johnson would have been there. It states,"Robert Johnston, with his sons John, William, Thomas and Robert, was in Lancaster County in 1745. He seems to have been a cousin of Robert Johnston of Rocky River, and may have originated in Chester County, (Pennsylvania). Johnston settled on the south fork of the Yadkin, adjoining Samuel, John, and Joseph Luckie". When clues are few and and far between, the mention of a county in Pennsylvania and the Luckie brothers become more important. Both of these clues proved useful.

I understand that the above data relies heavily on circumstantial evidence as to their status relative to our Johnson family. They were, at the very least, in the same areas that our Johnson ancestors traveled as historically listed for that time period. They were, at best, our very own family from which we descend. That said, I would like to now go back in time to the year 1625.

1625-1720

The years 1625-1720 saw several changes in the English power base in England. These changes also impacted the Scots who had gone to Ireland years earlier. Although the Scots-Irish fared better under some Monarchs than others, when Catholics were in power, times were very hard. Between 1660 and 1685, King Charles II took the throne. For non Catholics this was a very bad time. They no longer could freely practice their Protestant religion. Protestant Ministers were not permitted to perform a marriage ceremony. For a marriage to be considered legal, an Anglican priest had to Officiate. For over a Hundred years, the Scots-Irish endured having to tithe to the Anglican Church, being unable to hold a public office, and constant political strife. They could not endure, however, the drought, crop failure, and economic hardship starting in 1714 ending about 1729-1730 with a total migration in the area of 12,000 people. This migration occurred in two major units about 1714-1717 and 1725-1730.

In 1717, "The Great Migration" from Ulster to America started for real. The Scots-Irish poured out of Ireland to the new American colony which had just been formed by William Penn in the area now known as Pennsylvania. William Penn�s new colony touted religious tolerance. Our Robert and Lillias Corbett Johnston could very well have been children on that voyage to the new world or could have been born just after arrival. We can safely say that their families lived close to each other in the new city of Philadelphia.

The initial settlements in Pennsylvania were made in the southeastern counties near the ports of Philadelphia, Chester and New Castle. Generally these settlements were made by Ulster-Scots. Most of these Ulster-Scots were forced to emigrate from Ireland because of economic conditions in their homeland. As a result of these conditions, most came as indentured servants. The services of those individuals were most often used or purchased by well-to-do Quaker families. When they became free of their obligations, most moved on to the frontier settlements. When did our Robert and Lilias arrive? No one really knows as British subjects were not required to take the oath of allegiance to the British King nor were they often listed if indentured on some voyages. Their were many excuses for not listing people on the ships passenger list if they were not royalty. Sorry, the Johnston/Johnson�s were not royalty.

At present, I have not found any evidence of the status of our Johnston family upon their arrival in America. I believe it would be safe to say they were somewhere in the middle of the economic spectrum.

THE SCOTTISH CLANS

Having Scottish roots, our Robert and Lillias would have been associated with a Clan of Scotland. There are two Johnston Clans in Scotland. The Highlander Clan in the far north near the town of Aberdeen. The Lowlander Clan was in the far south of Scotland.

The Highland and Lowland Scots were very different from each other. They were separated by rugged terrain, language, and cultural differences. Each group of Scottish peoples were influenced and/or impacted by such races as the Vikings, Romans, and Norman conquerors.

The surname of Johnston could have also derived from the "dividing line" between the Highlanders and the Lowlanders which was the town of Perth. In "olden times", the present day city of Perth became known as "Saint John�s Town." When the custom of adopting a last name evolved, people often were identified by where they lived, such as John of "Saint John�s Town", which evolved to "Johnston". I have also been told that the name could have originated with the Norman invasion of the British Isles. The name "Johnson" was formed from, "son of John". I surmise from all the data that I have seen that we originated as Johnston, and over the years the "t" was used interchangeably and the finally dropped. ALL JOHNSTON/JOHNSON�S ARE NOT RELATED. NOT EVEN THE SMITH�S.

TO AMERICA

For many reasons the Scots had come to Ulster for a better life. If you were a Presbyterian, however, that life was not to be. It was written by a Donegal-(Ireland)-judge that,"The Presbyterian ministers have taken their share of pains to seduce their poor ignorant hearers, by bellowing from their pulpits against the Landlords and the Clergy, calling them rackers of Rents, and servers of Tithes, with other reflections of this nature, which they know is pleasing to their people, at the same time telling them that God has appointed a country for them to depart thence, where they will be freed from the bondage of Egypt and go to the land of Canaan."

This promised Land was America, and sometimes entire congregations departed for this new life in that far off land. Bad economic conditions, crop failures, and religious persecution all now add up to,"time for a change". Migration to America was not restricted as America was a British Colony at that time. Many sea captains were more than happy to have a cargo to America which paid money. They could then return with a load of goods from the colonies. Many sea captains became wealthy beyond expectations during the Scots-Irish migration to America.

PENNSYLVANIA

Philadelphia, in the new William Penn Colony of Pennsylvania, was by far the most popular port for Scots-Irish migrants. Philadelphia lay on a pre-established trade route, religious tolerance was good in the colony, and available farm land was in plentiful supply. Most Scots-Irish became farmers, as they had been in Ulster. From other settlers, they learned to build log cabins. They also learned to be very mobile as they would squat on a piece of land, farm until barren, then move on.

Since some of the Scots-Irish did not have roots in the land, they could move about more easily, and the land in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia started looking much better. There no longer existed hostile Indians to any degree in the Virginia Valleys, add to this, the Governor of Virginia wanted settlers in the valley. The Germans had preceded the Scots-Irish to the valley, but available land was still plentiful and cheap.

Migration was now an ingrained part of the Scots-Irish culture by now, again the moved. The Shenandoah Valley of Virginia was becoming a large trade route between Pennsylvania and the Southern Colonies. It later became known as the GREAT WAGON ROAD. This road became well traveled so was safer than most other areas to travel in.

Many of the Scots-Irish who initially purchased land in the Virginia Valley now sold that improved land at a profit and moved on to the Carolinas to buy additional land. Did out Johnstons buy land in Virginia? I have not found any conclusive proof that they did on their first trip through the valley. As we shall later learn, their children and Grand-Children would in fact purchase land in Southwest Virginia.

Most of the Scots-Irish settlers in North and South Carolina came first to the Piedmont. Land in the Piedmont was even cheaper than in Pennsylvania or Virginia. There was very good rich soil and an abundant supply of game. North Carolina was through print and word of mouth made the most popular emigrant destination in the mid to late 1700�s.

For once, the Scots-Irish got there first and obtained some very good plots of land on which to farm. Some of these settlements were considered illegal, but this was to be ironed out around the time of the American Revolution. The Scots-Irish flourished at this time.

THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

The American Revolution provides us with the beginning of a good paper trail with which to trace our Johnston Ancestors on their journey into Kentucky. It also provides us with some very real questions about which side of the revolutionary fence our ancestors stood on. In large part, our Scots-Irish Ancestors did not like the British Crown. There were some, however, which sided with the King of England..

With the ending of the American Revolution, people got back to the business of living. The frontier expanded and trade flourished. With economic conditions becoming very good, the government became stronger. Land Bounties and pension programs were setup to reward the patriots of the Revolution. I have not found any specific relevant land warrants for our Johnston ancestors, but a pension request filed in 1833 provides us with another set of clues on which to locate the who and where of our ancestors.

NORTH CAROLINA

"Robert Johnston with his three sons John, William, and Robert, was in Lancaster County in 1745. Johnston settled on the South Fork of the Yadkin, adjoining Samuel, John, and Joseph Luckie." We find a Robett Johnson on the Tax list of Rowan County for 1759. Again, circumstantial evidence, as there are no supporting documents. I believe this to be our Robert and Lillias Corbett Johnson. The name of Thomas Johnston will later emerge as being the father of Sarah Johnson Stapleton. Thus another ancestor, Thomas Johnston comes in line.

00-00-0001:-William Payne Johnson was born in North Carolina in 1781. He traveled with his parents through Tenn. into Kentucky. While on this journey, he met and married Sarah Tackitt. After Sarah's death-(abt 1815)-he married Lucy Ann Ayers. It is through this union that my direct line was born in the person of Bailey Johnson.

It has been reported that he and family then moved to a place called Pawnee Gap-(Letcher County, Ky. ?)-which was later changed to Payne Gap in his honor. (Not confirmed at this time) He did return to Pike County, Kentucky to live out his remaining years.

William Payne's will was one of the first wills to be probated in Pike County, Kentucky. He is believed to be buried on Long Fork-(Pike County). The Will is located in Book A, Page -1- and was produced in open court during the Janurary Term of 1840, "proved by the oaths of William Tackitt & Robert Johnson".

Later, with the clues provided in Vital Records information given by each of the children, we shall try to guess the location of the parents at the time. For now, we will assume that in 1768, Thomas and Sarah Johnson live on the Yadkin River in North Carolina. This is where we shall institute our Johnston/Johnson timeline.

THE MOUNTAINS OF APPALACHIA

OUR JOHNSTON/JOHNSON TIMELINE

1700-1720 :Arrival or birth in America.

1737-1737 :Marriage of Robert Johnston and Lillias Corbett in Philadelphia.

1738-1745 :Thomas is born. (could have been Pennsylvania or North Carolina)

1745-1755 :Arrival of Robert and Lillias Johnston on the Yadkin River in North Carolina.

1766-1767 :Thomas marries Mary Elizabeth Whitacre in North Carolina.

1768-1768 :First child of Thomas and Sarah arrives, named Sarah Johnson.

1769-1778 :Other children are born to Thomas and Mary. Thomas Jr. is listed in Official Records as having been born in Virginia. With the exception of Robert, most other children are listed as being born in North Carolina.

1778-1780 :According to stats given by Robert Johnson, he states the location of his birth as being South Carolina. Follow-up research reveals a Thomas Johnson enlisted in a Loyalist Company led by a Captain William Payne, Commanded by William Ferguson. More on this in a separate chapter discussion.

1780-1783 :According to information given by Sarah Johnson Stapleton in her Revolutionary War Widows Pension request, she is married to a Thomas Stapleton Jr. in the fall of the year at the forks of the big and little Yadkin Rivers in the county of Rowan located in the state of North Carolina. If Thomas Johnson and family did indeed travel to District 96 in South Carolina, they must have returned by by 1781, for the birth of their next child was believed to have occurred in 1781. The birth of William Payne Johnson in 1781 provides us with our next connecting link in the Johnson descendancy. William Payne will travel with his family to Tennessee, then into Knox County, Kentucky, settle ling with Thomas and Sarah on Long Fork in what became Pike county, Kentucky.

1784-1808 : Thomas Johnson and family have been tracked through land records from the Rowan County area of North Carolina into Hawkins County, Tennessee, Sullivan County, also in Tennessee, then on to Knox County in the state of Kentucky. There is speculation by some that Thomas and family could have lived in Russell County, Virginia during this time period. If, in fact, Thomas was a Loyalist in the Revolutionary War, it is possible that he felt that his family would be safer from prying eyes in the mountains of Virginia. That this move may have taken place is tax record data in Knox County, Kentucky showing that an Isaiah Salyer entered Thomas Johnson�s name on the tax record for Knox County. Isaiah Salyer was known to have been in what became Russell County, Virginia as early as 1782. Documentation is depicted below.

1808-1815 :Although not locked in stone, it appears that the bulk of the Johnson Clan moved on to Floyd County in the area that would become Pike County about the year 1815. Their appears in the,"Annals of Floyd County", written by Charles G. Wells a number of entries which indicate that the Johnson Clan has firmly settled into the Long Fork area of the County. The book referenced above was compiled for the years between 1800-1826.

1815-1818 :At this point in our timeline, we become more specific to our Johnson line of descendancy. A tragic event in the life of our William Payne occurs which will shape our specific line of descent. His wife of many years, and many children, passes away. In the future, William Payne will marry another wonderful lady, Lucy Ann Ayers. William Payne and Lucy Ayers Johnson become our line of descent which had begun in America with Robert and Lillias Corbett Johnston thru Thomas and Sarah Johnston to William Payne. To recap;

1818-1828 :Through land, marriage, and other legal records, we can place most of the Johnson Clan in the Floyd/Pike County area during this time frame. Thomas Johnston/Johnson senior dies about 1828. I have not found proof of where Thomas Sr. and Mary are buried. It is believed to be somewhere near the mouth of Long Fork, but that location has changed over the years.

0000-1850 :Our next line of descendancy arrived in the form of ,"Doc" William Payne Johnson born about 1851/1852. "Doc" was originally thought to be a doctor, but as it turned out, he was a Herbal type doctor. He was remembered by some as the old man with the medicine bag.

The Johnston/Johnson family loved the William Payne name to the extent that at one time, I had a listing on Seven William Payne Johnsons, all within a three generation span.
