The Derrick family intersects with both the Miller and Maiden family lines. And few individuals have been as fascinating as John C. Derrick, patriarch of the family. There is conflicting information about when and where he was born (Holland or Germany?) but there is evidence that he moved often and covered a lot of geography.
John C. Derrick married three times and fathered nine children from Iowa and Wisconsin to Missouri and Nebraska. One of his grandsons - William Walter Derrick - married Marie Miller, a sister to John Miller. And one of John C.'s daughters - Dora Ellen - married William H. Maiden, a grandfather of Lettie Maiden, wife of John Miller.
John C. Derrick died of pneumonia on the evening of 17 February 1913 at the age of 87 years. He was buried at the Hornet Creek Cemetery, nestled on a hillside near Council, Idaho.
