Most of the information on this web page was last updated on November 10, 2003. However the latest version was posted on July 2, 2007 by
Sheila Schmutz.
This site is a compilation of all the records I have found thus far
which include an Oliver living in Georgia up to 1830. I suggest you
use "Find in Page" through Netscape to locate the Oliver you
are searching for, using his or her first name. Alternatively you
could search in the county you suspect they lived in, if you are
unsure of a first name. Counties are arranged alphabetically.
If a county is not listed, it either did not exist then or if it existed, I
could find no Olivers there.
These data were obtained primarily from GaGenWeb Archives and
I thank all the people who transcribed records and contributed them
to those databases. Having attempted to read and transcribe some
original records, I now more than ever appreciate how difficult that
can be. They and I have done our best to interpret the spelling of
names and we apologize if there are errors.
TYPES of RECORDS SEARCHED
All records that contained a person named Oliver that I could find
so far, are included. Some records for families into which Oliver
women married are also listed but these are far from complete. Do
not necessarily give up if you do not find your Oliver on this page.
Not all counties have marriage records posted. Oliver women are
therefore especially hard to trace since only heads of households
were listed in the 1820 census. I have tried to make as
comprehensive of a list of 1820 census data as I could but later
censuses are not necessarily listed. I believe the 1827 Land Lottery
List is complete and it formed the basis of these data. Some, but not
all families moved to live on the land they received in that lottery.
If your Oliver family is not in the 1830 census in the county you
expect, it may be worth checking the county where they received
land in the lottery. However this was a time of early settlement and
migration. Some Oliver families moved to Alabama, particularly
along the western border and some moved to Florida. Undoubtedly,
others moved to other places.
Note that Georgia was not censused in the 1810 U.S. Census but
was first included in 1820 (https://sites.rootsweb.com/~gagenweb).
There is a reconstructed 1790 Georgia Census which is a compilation
of records from tax lists, jury lists, etc. There are also some later tax
lists. I include a listing for the 1830 census that is not yet organized
by county. I have not seen the originals of any of these.
GEORGIA about 1827
Georgia county boundaries were changing during this
period also. In 1777 there were only 8 counties and by 1820, in the
first census, there were 44. (see Historical Atlas of Georgia at
http://www.cviog.uga.edu/Projects/gainfo/histcountymaps/ or
http://www.sos.state.ga.us/archives/rs/gcc.htm).
This is a rough sketch of the counties about 1827 or earlier. The colored ones had a man named Charles Oliver living in them during the early 1800s, because I began my search for a man named Charles Oliver, as described on a related page.
