My Story
Waugh
Traditionally
a Border surname, found both on the English and the Scottish sides, its
derivation is the Old English wealh('a
foreigner' - see also Wallace). Three Border lairds, David de
Waughe of Lanrkshire, Robert Walgh of Roxburgh and Thomas
Walghe of Peeples all figure in the Ragman Roll of 1296. The Waughs
of Heip in Roxburghshire were a landed family for four hundred years.
The name is now found mainly in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Wallace
The
Old English word waelisc, and the Anglo-Norman word waleis
which came from it, mean'foreign' and are related to wealh 'foreigner'
(giving Waugh); waelisc gives the name Walsh and Welsh,
and waleis gives Wallace (together with the english surname Wallis)
The concept would refer to any minority group; the English applied it to
Cymru,
thus coining the term Wales. In Scotland it was used with reference
to the inhabitants of the ancient kingdom of Strathclyde, who were of Brittonic
or Welsh race; those of them who survived into the mediaeval period came
to have the surname Wallace.
The
WAUGH
name first appears in Canadian records with a Francis Waugh born in Eniskillan,
Ireland in 1816, marrying Anne Kirk in 1838 and immigrating to Canada in
1848, settling in the Wellington County. Ontario area. (There is also a
Francis Waugh, from Ireland, listed as an immigrant in the late 1600's,
who apparently travelled to the prairie provinces and was never heard from
again.)
The
GARFAT
family name is traced from the present to the 1700's on the following pages.
Most of my personal history was obtained that rainy day, with the empty
places filled from library, archives, and other family sources. There is
a little mystery, as my Grandmother relates (and open to future discussion)
that William James Garfat was raised by an uncle, who also had three sons....William,
Frank and Joseph.
I have branched off
on some of the names on the paternal side of my personal history with a
little success. On the maternal side....not as lucky, as I was only able
to go back to my grandmother and I think that is as far as I will be able
to go....
MY
LIFE STORY
(The shortened version,
as I know you don't have all day)
My birth
took place at 75 Brook Road, Meersbrook, Sheffield, England, to Veronica
Timperley, a young girl, of Irish descent. My father, Kenneth
Garfat Waugh, was in the Canadian Army, and stationed in England
at the time. My father was also of Irish descent, with a little Welsh and
Scottish and a lot of Yorkshire England thrown in. I moved to Canada in
1946 at the age of 18 months ( at the time I had no choice, however I am
pleased and proud that it took place ). I arrived almost 200 years after
my father's ancestors settled here from Enniskillen Ireland in the early
1700, and Yorkshire, England in the 1800's
My
first home on Canadian soil was 16 Arthur Street, London Ontario. I don't
remember much about my first of many stays in this grand house, but I do
remember the other times there. My father remained in the Regular Canadian
Army (Armoured Corps) after the Second World War and I spent most of my
childhood on Canadian Armed Forces Bases (Bordon and Petawawa). As I recalled,
I seemed to have a happy childhood as I can't remember any discomforts.
We were well looked afterin those days, as, although we lived in isolated
parts of the country, we were want for nothing.
My schooling was primarily
on the bases and when my father retired from the force, we moved to London
Ontario. There I attended London Catholic Central and the following year,
London Central. Moving to Toronto, I attended Jarvis Collegiate.
The only thing that I remember from My High School Education is that attending
4 different schools, I had to participate in Wm.Shakespear's Twelfth
Night 4 times.....
Leaving Jarvis C.I.,
I entered the work force as a printer's apprentice and remained in that
business for 5 years. Travelling to work one day, while reading the
ad signs in the Subway, I noticed that the Toronto Transit Commission was
recruiting drivers. I remained on the train until it arrived at their employment
office. Applying, I was accepted and 30 years later, retired from a very
productive and rewarding career.
During this time, I
married (1965). Became the proud father of a son (1970) and daughter (1974).
Had 4 dogs. No cats, and several fish. In July of '97, I suffered a heart
attack and underwent a triple by-pass in March of '98. I have since been
assessed in a rehab center, passing with flying colours and hope to walk
on this planet for at least another 20 years, or at least until
I collect every penny I contributed to my retirement fund....
My hobbies include
reading, sports (hockey), pottery (member of The Village Potterers, Markham)
and volunteer. (Cardiac Counsellor, as well as record novels to tape
for the Visually Handicap)
My connection to
the Garfat Family
is through my paternal Grandmother, Daisy Wilabeth Garfat, youngest daughter
of William James Garfat Jr and Elizabeth Davis. My grandmother was a great
lady, kind, gentle and full of humour, as well as smarts. There was not
much in this life that she did not experience. She never pushed her life
experiences on others, but rather waited for her children,
grandchildren, and
great grandchildren to approach her for advise. Her advise was concise
and usually to the point, but always given from the heart and always fruitful.
She was the incontestable perfect grandmother, but then I could be a little
prejudice.
I recall several great
aunts and remember them as being a little on the stern side......but I
suppose that could be due to the fact that a little boy full of mischief,
could be an irritant to elderly ladies.
My grandmother passed
away in 1989 and in accordance to her requests, Mack the Knife
and
Alley Cat were played at her Funeral. And again at her request,
after the funeral, her family ( sons, daughters, grandchildren and great
grand children, along with spouses, boyfriends and girlfriends), formed
a long line and as a final gesture to her memory, to the tune of Alley
Cat performed a poor, but enthusiastic Can-Can....this
is one of the fondest memories I have of my Grandmother.
FAMILY REUNION 1999
On August 6th,
1999, I travelled to Oshawa Ontario ( a 20 min drive) filled with anticipation,
as well as trepidation. This was to be the first ever Garfat Family
Reunion. I had no idea as to the number of people who would be attending,
nor had I ever met any of them before. I walked in....looked around and
found approximately 7 people there, about 4 more than I anticipated. I
was made to feel right at home, and welcomed by all. After introductions
all around, we sat and discussed relationships and how I fit in....The
rest of the weekend, I discovered that, indeed, I had several relatives,
more than I had ever known. 1st cousins, 2nd cousins and even more, as
approximately 70 relatives appeared before the weekend was over. Resemblances
were remarkable and I saw my grandmother
resemblance in faces
of some who attended. I saw uncles as well. I was fascinated.
The weekend progressed
and was over much too soon. In all, more than 70 people attended, all related.
It was a wonderful time and on the return trip I almost drove past my town
as I was deep in thought, reflecting on the weekend. The next one ( in
2001 ) is too long off....but I am making my plans already....

A FAMILY HISTORY
"and it must be true, cause my gramma tol'me so"
According to the family history, as told to me by my
grandmother, Daisy Wilabeth (Garfat) Waugh, the Waugh name originated in
Germany. They were a bad bunch apparently and left Germany in great haste to
avoid the hangmans noose. The Family business warranted this, as rumour has it
that they provided for their families in horse trading. The only problem being,
that the horses they traded, did not belong to them.
Taking what they could carry on their horses, and of course boats (wonder where
they got them from) they made their way to southern Scotland and became
dwellers of the wall, Haidrians Wall that is....Here the name pronunciation
softened and all was well for them, until they found that instead of farming and
raising sheep, they discovered it more profitable to climb the wall and enter into
Northern England to raid and pillage the small villages there.
Around 1601, the local chieftains, under King James the First, frowned on this
practice, and after calling the Clans together, issued commands to the effect
that they had three choices....stop....get out....or lose their heads. Some
stayed and it is not known if they behaved themselves thus entitling them to
keep their heads or not....the others left....to England, Ireland and Wales...
many Waughs among them
In the mid to late 1840's, economical strife. as well as famine, forced many
Irish families to look westward and emigrate to North America. My direct
ancestors were part of this group, coming to Canada in 1848....There is word of
another Francis Waugh, coming to Canada in the early 1700's and travelling to
Western Canada....unfortunately there is no further record of him....
Following is an incomplete Family Tree. It is true as written and hopefully I will
eventually be able to fill the gaps....
I have attempted to create a flowing file chart to both my paternal and maternal
family trees. I think I may have succeeded....maybe not....but it was an
attempt.Hope you enjoy it....take what you want (please read conditions at bottom of page)
and if you happen to have information that you think I could use....send it to
me....
