A thought that may lend credibility:
Oliver Cromwell offered his granddaughter, Edith, to Christopher Gist. He would have been aware of the Gist family relationship to royalty and might very well have arranged this marriage in order to form an alliance (now we have treaties) in order to further protect himself.
Alliances through marriage were very common then and Cromwell, the man Winston Churchill called "...the most despicable man who ever lived...responsible for all the problems in Ireland", was certainly very skilled politically. (I'll bet this was before Churchill dealt with Hitler)
