Genealogy sheets
Spread out on the table--
Writing names, dates and places
As fast as I'm able.

Microfilms, fiches,
Computers and such,
Sometimes I get discouraged,
It all seems too much.

Special collections,
And big old gray binders--
Volunteers to help us
Who act as reminders--

So when we forget
What we're supposed to do now,
They guide us, encouraging,
And showing us how.

Books on library shelf
In confusing array--
Names just keep appearing--
Guess I'm here to stay.

I find pieces of puzzle
Branch, trunk, and leaf.
It's beginning to grow
Just like a tree.

It seems that my ancestors
Gone on before
Want me to remember
That they're something more--

Than names on a tombstone,
In census, or book.
They want me to know them,
They want me to look.

Sometimes they guide me
When I listen, I hear.
When I'm quiet and prayerful,
I feel them so near.

Oh, dear family of mine
Who've passed through the veil,
Please try to be patient—
I'll try not to fail.

I'll fast and I'll pray
That I'll never lose one
Who wants to be found--
I won't quit 'till it's done.

And since that is never,
I'll pray to have time,
I'll pray for good health,
Which is not always mine.

I'll try to be organized,
Neat and efficient,
While hoping my efforts
Will still be sufficient.

I've felt of the joy,
The hope and the love
From family and friends
Now in heaven above.

What a joyous reunion,
Now I know who they are--
I know lots about them;
Oh, heaven's not far.

So I'll continue to trudge
Through the library door,
Saying hi to the helpers
Who smile on each floor.

I'll sit there at the table
With my tote, notes, and disk;
I hope when I leave
The alarm won't make them frisk.

And the helpers on the Internet
I couldn't live without
With documents and photos
We're proving our family without doubt.

Everyone is just so sweet
During all the time I've spent--
Volunteers and Kin I've never met
Are surely heaven-sent.

Oh, so grateful am I
For their sacrifice of time,
My family I never knew
They now have helped me find.
