RUTHERFORD GOES WEST
Rutherford
left here about 1891 and went out to Sterling City. He held some sort of
office in this sparsely settled country and then moved on to Indian
Territory. There he was looking after the business of some wealthy Indian
woman. Her uncle or some sort of relation named Durant, for whom the city
was named, though he was beating the woman out of some money. In and
altercation Rutherford shot him but did not kill him. He said that if an
officer hadn’t got between them he would have finished him and came near
shooting through the policeman and doing it anyhow. He had a hard time
getting out of that trouble there.
It has been said that if a man went up into the Territory or later the
State and showed a little shooting ability and propensity some rich Indian
woman might come and bail him out of jail and marry him. Anyhow, he
married the Indian woman, and they did come back here one time. Mr.
Williams remembered and she was a yellow or golden hued lady.
