THEY HAD TO KIDNAP WITNESS
That he and other friends had backed Colin George for district
attorney, and he was elected. Soon after that a friend of theirs was going
to be tried in Stephenville for a killing or a shooting. Remembering that
they had backed Colin George for the prosecutor’s job, he and another
went over to Stephenville to take to him There was no accommodation to
him. He would not relax at all. All they could do was get the state’s
main state’s witness, carry him out to a vacant house in the country,
and hide him. Court would be over in two or three days...
(Collin George was born and raised in the east part of Hamilton County.
I understand he was born there. His father was an early day merchant.
Colin was an athlete, a very fast runner, went over the country and won
prizes. The first of my recollection he lived at Stephenville. As a boy I
once wandered into the courtroom here, not knowing what it was all about,
and Colin
George as a special prosecutor was making the closing argument in the
trial of a Mr. Hubbard of Hico for forgery or swindling, and it was the
most soothing speech I have heard in court to this day. Mr. George moved
to Brownsville, became a partner with Mr. Seaberry, whom I remember as the
Speaker of the House when Teddy Roosevelt came to Texas. He collected
Persian rugs, had a small Mexican to follow and carry his pipe on the
streets. He married Miss
Akers, a girl who lived down Pecan Creek, a girl popular with the
cowboys in an early day.)
