THE RICES

Mr. Williams did not know when the Rices first came. They first settled lower down the river, then moved on up it from Grandma’s place. He pointed this out on our trip down to that country. The Rices moved to town early but he was not sure when. Seemed to think he lived in Hamilton during the Civil War when he had the ranger company.

(The Crumbling old Rice residence now abandoned is just at the top of the hill from Rice Avenue. [On the south side of West Grogan Street.--Elreeta Weathers) This was build very early. It stands [stood] true north and south, and not N 19 E and S 71 W as nearly all surveys do in the county.)

James W. Rice was a good man. Claunch was a good man. And he had always thought William Snell was a good one.
