We were examining the list of personal effects auctioned off in the Witcher
estate (See story, "The Case of Adam Witcher) and where Josh Cook
bid forty dollars on credit for a watch, which Mr. Williams said he never
had any intention of paying for. Even if he had he wasn’t here long
after that.
There was a Frenchman named Duson or some such name who had a
confectionary store, and a beautiful daughter with him, on the west side
of the square. One time Josh Cook went in and had an altercation with the
Frenchman, he latter was backing off fast as Cook pulled his pistol. He
fired. The Frenchman, stumbling fell. He was not even hit, but Cook ran
off and wasn’t seen again for twenty years. Finally came back. He was a
brother of Bill Cook.
